Happy Leap Year Did you know Leap Year is more than just an extra day on the calendar? It's filled with unique and quirky traditions around the world. For instance, in Ireland and the UK, it's customary for women to propose marriage to men. However, in Greece, many couples avoid getting married in a leap year, believing it bad luck. In the town of Anthony in New Mexico, there's an International Leap Year Festival with a birthday party for all leap-year babies. Whilst in France, you may wish to pick up a copy of 'La Bougie du Sapeur', a satirical French newspaper that only comes out every four years. So, whether you're attending a once-every-four-years party, proposing, or enjoying the extra day, Happy Leap Year!

Yesterday, Craig travelled up to Norwich to catch up with the team and enjoy the first day of the nor(DEV):con developer’s conference, as well as enjoying a cheeky curry afterwards. His day began with Garth Gilmour’s keynote on the “heat death” of Enterprise IT. How are developers expected to cover the whole range of roles alone (business analysis, coding, QA, security, infrastructure)? Garth presented each “bad/pessimistic” view, with each being countered by a more positive note from Eamonn Boyle. At the end, they did a show of hands about whether people were on the optimistic/pessimistic side - it was about 2/3rds optimistic!   Next, Craig delved into Internet threats with Ignat Korchagin, discussing how Cloudflare handles the vast amount of traffic they receive from good and bad actors, how by removing load balancers and using routing hardware to improve performance, and filtering bad traffic earlier using eBPF.   Steve Love talked about how property-based testing can be used to improve the reliability of code testing to generate pseudo-random test datasets in .Net. Particularly useful for testing algorithms. The origins of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday in England date back to the 15th century. It was the last chance for indulgence before the 40 days of Lent and was an opportunity to use up food that couldn’t be eaten, including eggs, milk and fat.   Accent’s Dave is known for flipping a wicked thin pancake, and he’s willing to share his tried and tasty recipe.   4oz plain flour Pinch of salt Half pint of milk 1 egg (beaten) Butter (or equivalent spread) Sugar Lemon juice   Preparation Sieve the flour into a bowl Add the egg and a quarter of the milk Beat into a smooth mixture, adding the remaining milk slowly Leave to stand for 10 minutes   Cooking Preheat the frying pan and make sure the pan is hot! Use a teaspoon of butter in the frying pan until hot and foaming Add 2-3 tablespoons of batter for each pancake, swirling it around the pan as you add it Cook each pancake for 1-2 minutes, then flip over for 1 minute on the other side Layer in a stack and serve rolled with a sprinkle of sugar and a splash of lemon juice.   #shrovetuesday #pancakeday #pancakerecipe

A couple of weeks ago, Geoff and Craig ventured to the big smoke to visit the Event Tech Live exhibition at Excel. As well as catching up with clients Worldwide Events and Grip, they attended talks and explored the latest in event technology. Their brief assessment of the marketplace is that big ideas we have seen over the past few years involving 3D, AI, and metaverses have come to fruition and are in actual innovative products.
