"So what did you do today Rachael?", Me - "Well the amazing Aurerie and I taught an inspiring class of young teenagers, at the Priory School in Bury St Edmunds, how to make willow weaved 'Helter Skelter' climbing plant supports (Aurelie's original design, my name for them!) and then we planted up with either sweet peas or edible dwarf peas with the addition of a rainbow mix of trailing nasturtiums seeds. It's part of our gardening enterprise project this term and the product build towards a fundraising sale late May to buy much -needed gardening tools for the school. Sadly, we have a polytunnel but no gardening toolsπ₯² so I loan mine. When I introduced our sessions fun mission(s) and they were dauntingly looking at the climber prototype, at first the youngers were like "we can't do that!!" and I replied passionately "YES you can and we'll prove it!" and I knew they ALL would and amusingly for all π€£they soon showed themselves more capable than their teachers!

SPRING IS IN FULL FLING @ Riduna Business Park Gardens in Melton, Woodbridge
Itβs officially early - OUR bulbous beauties around the grounds are blooming a rainbow of colours, the perennial plants are thriving with fresh new green growth and our newly planted trees are already blossoming ready to bear fruit later this summer.
I would like to thank all those many businesses, employees and visitors that take the time to say to our team and I on our every visit to remark how the natural colour brings relief to their office working days and that our efforts evoke joy ππ

BOUNDARIES THAT BRING BEAUTY... How to build a dead hedge habitat haven!
Dead hedges provide essential shelter and nesting havens for birds, small mammals, insects and a natural looking barrier alternative to costly formal fencing that not only blends into the natural environment but enriches local biodiversity. They are a great way to recycle woody plant waste too! Hereβs my simple guide to making your own:)
Step 1/ Measure length of boundary area requiring hedging It may be that you are filling gaps as we are at Riduna Park (see pix). Calculate how many fence posts you will need based on a max 1.5 metre spacing and allowing up to 50cm spacing between the parallel posts for filling. Top tip: Mark the post placement with pegs
Step 2/ Collect dead branches and woody prunings and trim into 2m sections, bundle in bark types/ colours if possible to enhance decorative layering and mix of materials for creatures to utilise
Step 3/ Using a post rammer and a small sharp arrow spade drive the sharp end of the fence posts at least a foot down into the ground and securely firm in around the base with your 'stompy' feet. Please ensure you are wearing sturdy protective boots
Step 4/ Layer deadwood horizontally between the fence posts and push down. As the seasons progress and plant materials decay with age you will need to occasionally top up
Step 5/ Enjoy the wildlife views and feel proud you are officially an eco-friendly wildlife gardener:)

Hope to see you there!
There are certain plants as a hortic soul you self identify with and for me the pure joy of seeing amongst the damp undergrowth the autumn Crocuses is definitely one and also it seems it is for our dancing pollinator heroes - hoverflies π» Which I also identify with... You can identify them distinctly, as they may look like bees but only have 2 wings (not 4 like bees), hover at ground level and live underground in their nests whilst improving soil structure like me too..
