The John Ruskin Competition
The pavilion brief: The John Ruskin Prize is looking to expand and surpass the confines of the art gallery and to harvest the possibilities of interdisciplinary work with architecture. The submissions have been predominantly in two-dimensional media for that last 4 years, with a surge of art objects and installations in the 2017’s instalment; therefore, the desire to emphasise three-dimensional submissions in the 2019 competition was reflected by the collaboration with the RIBA Yorkshire.
The John Ruskin Prize 2019 aims to uphold Ruskin’s beliefs whilst challenging the nation’s creatives to consider their role as catalysts of change, urban dwellers, civic beings, socio-political commentators and material innovators. Open to a broad range of interpretations, the prize organisers are inviting entries from a range of creative architects in response to the theme: “An Urban Artefact- change in the city”.
The theme provides a unique opportunity for artists and architects to create an urban intervention that captures, and is inspired by, the true nature of the city, focusing on producing an intervention located in Sheffield’s Train station square.
ADAPT Studio. took part in this wonderful opportunity in creating an ‘Urban artefact’ for The John Ruskin Prize. Using the process of 3D Printing we have created an artefact which was inspired by artist ‘Richard Serra’. We are fond of Serra’s work and it has inspired us to create this fabulous artefact which takes on a few concepts and ideas as well as reflects on the civicness of Sheffield

We as a firm arrange to go on trips once a year to allow us to experience the culture and different architectural buildings and elements which are created by many famous architects.
This year we as a firm arranged a trip to Berlin for 5 days in order to see many different buildings such as:
- Reichstag building/Dome
- Fernsehturm Berlin
- Berlin Cathedral
- Berlin Hauptbahnof
- Bellevue Palace
- Topography of terror
- And many more…
This was a very beneficial trip as we got to see many inspiring designs and ideas on how architects have designed and helped create spaces which benefit the social activity within spaces.
Nottingham Student Job fair
This was an event held by Nottingham University which allowed companies such as us to engage with students who are looking to Gradate over summer in need to look for jobs. We contributed to this event to allow students to fully engage and find out more about our firm and what we do and provide for the society.
This was a very successful event which helped us get to know how clients feel on what we had to offer and we also helped guide many architecture students on what they can do to improve on their projects as well as give them incites on what we do and our projects.
RIBA National Schools Competition
As a part of the launch of new Clore Learning Centre, we invited schools from across the East Midlands to take part in the Building for Survival Competition. We asked students to design a new building or space for communities affected by extreme weather which tried to reduce environmental pollution and solved problems created by the new climate residents would face. The winning entry would win a free in-school architecture workshop for their class to do with 3D printing.
On Saturday 26th October audiences at the RIBA Festival of Learning, voted on their favourite concept from the shortlisted entries, with the winning entry announced by esteemed environmental scientist Professor James Crabbe.
We are therefore delighted to announce that Drain Tower, by Maggie age 11 at Penkridge Middle School, Staffordshire is the winning design.
Architectures of Education: Conference
Nottingham Contemporary
Weekday cross, NG1 2GB Nottingham
We visited and took part in this spectacular conference to help broaden our mind on Architecture and the history of education during perods of time.
We visited and took part in this spectacular conference to help broaden our mind on Architecture and the history of education during periods of time.
Architectures of Education is a three-day programme with presentations, workshops, keynotes and screening reflecting on cultures and architectures of education today and speculate about what futures may lay on the horizons of knowledge production. The event brings together some of the brightest thinkers and practitioners investigating the relationship between architecture and cultures of education today.
Throughout the twentieth and into the twenty-first century, as pedagogical ideals change, so have their architectural form. The spatial organisation of learning is a field of design that includes the positioning of bodies, the texture and colour of surfaces, the proportionality of objects, curricula and programmatic offerings, time scheduling, and beyond. Similarly, learning be a subject of design, as the process of surplus education unfolds outside the classroom. With the advancement not just of new learning models but new learning technologies, the classroom and education of tomorrow may not look like how it did today.
To celebrate the opening of the new Clore Learning Centre, RIBA invited learners of all ages to join the week-long RIBA Festival of Learning. Putting personal creativity centre-stage, free activities over four days encouraged families to explore architecture and engage with the latest themes in design.
Therefore, to help engage with the society and help RIBA, we held a few workshop of our own to help learners of all ages to learn about the design process and developed skills in drawing and modelmaking through creative workshops led by our architects, as well as show them how the process of 3D printing works and allowed them to create their own 3D small innovative models using our Model making 3D printers.
The activities were free to attend throughout the week.
Workshop for families and children
We engaged with a workshop which was inspired by the RIBA Collections and seasonal exhibitions, on a programme for families and children provides hands-on creative activities for you to explore contemporary themes around architecture including housing, the environment, migration and placemaking.
Our large-scale family days offer an opportunity for you to learn and work together on a variety of drop-in and timed activities including big builds, digital workshops and collaborative installations.
Overall this was a very successful workshop to engage with the society today and encourage them to think of ways in which they can develop their creative skills through design and construction challenges.
