Cautions for hot weather day hikers.

* Pace yourself.

* Don't try to keep up with hikers who push hard and go fast in hot weather: hike your own sensible hike.

* Take your water breaks seriously. Set a timer on your watch if necessary to be sure you're drinking frequently.

* Carry salty snacks but avoid loading up on a lot of food all at once.

* Use the long days of summer to start your hike in the cool of early, early morning or late afternoon.

* Choose your route and destination to avoid blazing direct sunlight whenever possible.

* This sounds really simplistic, but wear this style of wide brimmed hat with full coverage of your face, ears and neck.

* Sunscreen needs to be reapplied every few hours because you're losing it to sweat and the application of the aforementioned towel.

Despite being active all year round, Ticks are more active in April - June and sometimes August in the UK.

Infected Ticks can transmit Lyme disease.

Follow the link for the NHS website page.
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/lyme-disease/

How to spot and remove ticks.

- Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick-removal tool. You can buy these from some pharmacies, vets and pet shops.

- Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.

- Slowly pull upwards, taking care not to squeeze or crush the tick.

-Clean the bite with antiseptic or soap and water.

The same treatment should be used on your pets, so regularly check them also as you would check yourself.

I had the pleasure of delivering a Navigation workshop this weekend for members of in the Surprise view, Stanage and Padley gorge area of the Peak District.

Totally different weather on both days, from hale, sleet and rain on Saturday to blue skys and glorious sunshine on the Sunday.

Those attending learnt about;
- Different types of map and map scale.
- 4 and 6 fig grid references.
- Measuring distance on a map.
- contours and features.
- orientation of the map to ground, using both features and the silva compass.
- The silva compass and use of the Roma.
- Pacing.
- catching/collecting features and the use of handrails.

The group then went through a series of micro navigation exercises using catching/collecting features and handrails. After a short stop for a brew, they then in pairs, successfully navigated a 3.5km set route back to surprise view putting everything they had learnt into practice.

A successful and enjoyable day.

What do you carry?

First aid kits are personal to you, what you carry if anything will be a quick fix until your safely back to your car or entry point.

Here is a recommended minimum requirement below.

First aid kits should vary depending on the activity you’re taking part in, whether on foot, on wheels or indeed on water. As an example; If you are regularly hiking then generally it’s feet, ankles, knees and lower limb muscular injuries. So, zinc oxide tape (prevention) , compeed (treatment) , elasticated sport tape (treatment) is good to strap up a sprain. Also think about pain relief, Ibuprofen (anti inflammatory) paracetamol or aspirin for pain relief.

At the end of the day prevention is the key.

Stay safe, have fun, make memories.

Well, we are seeing more of the large yellow globe in the sky and the day time temperatures are on the rise.

However, don’t be sucked into a false sense of security. The weather can change and temperatures can drop pretty rapidly especially on high ground and exposed areas.

Hypothermia is when your body temperature drops, your heart, nervous system and other organs can't work normally. Left untreated, hypothermia can lead to complete failure of your heart and respiratory system and eventually to death.

Hypothermia is often caused by exposure to cold weather, immersion in cold water or drenched in a downpour. Primary treatments for hypothermia are methods to warm the body back to a normal temperature. The best prevention is preparation, whether you are working outdoors or hiking in the mountains, make sure you dress accordingly, remember the layer system and watch out for one another.

Here are some sign and symptoms.

Regardless if your on a solo walk in the countryside, exploring woodland and forests, up hills or for those adventures, climbing one of the UK’s many mountains. If you’re out with your 4 legged companion and pick up a serious injury or suffer an illness, your 4 legged friend will no doubt stay by your side.

A whistle can be used to alert people if you are in distress. The internationally recognised distress signal is 6 blasts of the whistle with a 1 minute break and then repeated. The reply is 3 blasts with the same pause.

Tilly will be wearing her emergency dog collar from now on, at least if I’m ever separated from my kit, I can always rely on her to be by my side.

The collar is complete with whistle and Ferro rod fire starting kit.

This is Trevor, Trevor has extensive knowledge of first aid and navigation, which he learnt during his time in the army. Trevor came to the aid of a climber who had a dislocation to his right ankle, following a fall from height.

Using his first aid experience he was able to assess and treat the casualty, including treating for the environment. By having excellent navigational skills, was able to pin point their exact location and raise help, passing on all the relevant information including an 8 figure grid reference to the emergency services.

Another cracking days training on Sunday following the previous Hill safe format. This is all ready to deliver over 2 days; by doing so expanding on the Nav and F/aid practical skills, with a full day navigation and first aid scenario based assessments.

Photos from FirstAid4Me.Training's post 21/06/2023

Popped together a ‘Hill Safe’ pilot course for members of a hiking club, combining navigation, first aid, how to raise help and casualty monitoring and reporting using ATMIST.

The day went really well and the students went from little or no navigation experience to learning about different maps and map scale, the Silva compass, 4/6 fig grid references, orientating map to ground with or without a compass. This led on nicely to route selection and planning, plotting a grid bearing and taking a magnetic bearing, measuring distance, catching features and hand railing. They covered briefly resection and intersection and how this could be useful in an emergency situation.

After a break for lunch the students then went on to learn some basic first aid covering in detail;
Individual and group first aid kits, primary and secondary survey, basic life support (BLS), head to toe check and the recovery position. The students then went through; types of bleed and dressings, fractures both closed and open, burns and how to treat a casualty for shock.

The feed back from the students was great and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

To deliver this course again I would be looking at 2 days, this then allowing students to combine both navigation and first aid through a number of scenarios whilst enjoying a quality day in the hills.
