Calcium Carbonate is an essential mineral that is widely used in the Pharmaceutical industry. It is mined from ground deposits (known as Ground Calcium Carbonate) or is made industrially by treating limestone with Carbon Dioxide (known as Precipitated Calcium Carbonate).

Both GCC and PCC is mined with a large carbon footprint. It is often transported across the globe increasing the carbon footprint further

Additionally, mined materials has a persistent and inherent problem. They contain Toxic Heavy Metals, which can be carried over in the final product. Toxic Heavy Metals like Mercury, Lead and Cadmium are present in mined Calcium Carbonate ores and may not be completely removed by expensive processing.

The UK consumed more than 13 billion eggs in 2020. 20% of these eggs went into the food processing industry, producing mayonnaise, cakes and cooked eggs. These 2 billion eggs, create a big problem for the companies by leaving behind thousands of tonnes of eggshells.

In the UK more than 15,000 tonnes of eggshells are landfilled every year and processing companies have to pay upwards of £100 per tonne of discarded eggshells. That’s more than £1,500,000 every year just for disposing eggshells!

Currently, most of the eggshells from the egg processing industry are either dumped into landfill or spread on the land. Landfilling eggshells creates a problem.

UK produces over 15,000 tonnes of waste eggshells which are landfilled every year, releasing 63,000 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide, Sulphur Dioxide and Phosphates into the environment and atmosphere.

Eggshells, though not edible, are a valuable co-product due to their high content of Calcium Carbonate. Eggshells are made up of 95% Calcium Carbonate by weight and all that material can be used to make useful products.
