We are happy to introduce you to our Fellow of the week, Konstantinos Mantalovas! 🎊

The main focus of Konstantinos’ research is on asphalt mixtures and asphalt pavements in general in an attempt to include also the built environment and transportation infrastructures. So far, research on characterisation of asphalt mixtures with increased percentages of recycled (reclaimed asphalt) and antistripping additives that can increase the durability of the asphalt mixtures has been conducted.

However, the importance of the current environmental situation has led towards researching the environmental, economic, and social impacts of the aforementioned aspects. Thus, Konstantinos’ current research is based on developing a framework, guidelines and indicators that can help the transition of the road engineering industry towards a Circular Economy and more sustainable practices in general. He is doing so through a quantitative approach towards the measurement of the environmental impacts and the combined potential circularity of materials that are predominantly used in the construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructures. For that, he has used the frameworks of Life Cycle Assessment and Material Circularity index with the ultimate goal of creating a single score, composite indicator that can simultaneously assess the environmental performance and the level of compliance to the principles of Circular Economy, of an infrastructure component and/or a material.

Konstantinos has participated in the European Researchers' Night in 2017, 2018, and 2019. He has published 10 scientific papers and disseminated his research in a number of scientific conferences in Europe, South Korea and the USA.

“As an MSCA fellow within the Smarti ETN project, I was provided with the unique opportunity to be part of a global network of industry professionals and academics specializing in transportation infrastructures. I was able to acquire a broad array of knowledge that has helped me with my research and not only. The fellowship has provided me with the platform for training in many different aspects of my research and my soft skills, to see and experience many different places and to grow as a professional and as a person. Although my individual project has been a challenge, SMARTI has been an unforgettable and amazing time in my life and I owe tremendous gratitude towards the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and all the great people within the SMARTI ETN project.”
