JTL
Offering advanced apprenticeships in electrical, plumbing, engineering maintenance and more. Charitable organisation operating in England and Wales.
We're looking forward to this!
On Thursday we are hosting the Alex Innes Apprenticeship Awards at our JTL training centre in Oxford, a competition to find Oxfordshire's Best Electrical Apprentice.
Organised by the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA), the event will see apprentices set a mix of tasks, both practical and theory based, competing against each other to showcase their skills. It's also a chance to tour our facilities and provides great networking opportunities for all apprentices pursuing a career in our industry.
The Awards are named in memory of an Oxfordshire electrician who tragically lost his life. The Innes family are electrical contractors who have worked in the area for 25 years and are continued supporters of the ECA and apprenticeships.
We can't wait to see the exceptional talent and celebrate local apprentices employed by local businesses.
Good luck to all those taking part!
The moment that Chris Lintern won JTL National Apprentice of the Year 2024 👏🏆
Chris completed his apprenticeship at Spectrum Electrical Group, and was crowned National Apprentice of the Year at our Awards ceremony in June.
Receiving his award, Chris said: "“It feels amazing to be named the national winner, I’m very proud to be recognised for what I’ve achieved. Next in my career, I want to do some more electrical-based training, excel a bit more in the industry and keep working as hard as I can.
“To people looking to get on the career ladder in this industry, definitely consider doing an apprenticeship, it’s the best way to learn in my opinion. It gives both practical and theoretical ways of learning all in one, the best of both worlds.”
Huge congratulations again to Chris and our other winners.

Earlier this month we welcomed students from the Orion Academy to our JTL training centre in Oxford to talk all things STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths), and how an apprenticeship will unlock a career in building services engineering.
Our dedicated Oxford team showed students around the electrical workshop, giving them hands-on experience with electrical circuits, and shared insights into engineering training and the workplace. The group also took the opportunity to do a site visit with Darke & Taylor to showcase a construction project on the Harwell Science & Innovation campus.
We hope to see some of these young minds taking up an apprenticeship and joining the industry in the near future.
Could a energize your business?
At JTL we train approximately 8,000 highly skilled apprentices annually in building services engineering. With our state-of-the-art training centres located across the country, we ensure access to the latest academic criteria.

Yesterday's King's Speech to Parliament set out the Government's legislative agenda. This included plans for a new national skills body, Skills England, further devolution of skills powers to local leaders, as well as plans to unlock more housing and infrastructure.
JTL's Chief Executive, Chris Claydon, commented:
"The legislative agenda set out in the King's Speech today goes some way to recognising the importance of skills training routes to economic growth.
"Technical skills are now business critical to achieving net zero and to delivering high quality infrastructure and housing. We cannot build safe, quality homes at pace without highly-skilled electricians and plumbers, and the building services industry is already experiencing these skills gaps. So more apprenticeships, with the necessary funding support, is more important than ever.
"While of course reforms take time, it is clear that there is great opportunity for our sector over the months and years ahead. JTL looks forward to working with the new Government as it implements its ambitious agenda".
This Net Zero Week, we’ve been talking to JTL colleagues about how they’ve developed their own green skills.
Ali Bullough, Employee Development Technical Specialist, completed training on Electric Vehicle charging installation and subsequently helped to create a new course which was piloted and is now offered by Develop Training. Successful completion will lead to qualification as an Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) authorised installer.
Ali says: "advancements in smart buildings and energy management represent more opportunity and career paths for installers, and it’s tangible progress towards net zero. That progress is something that JTL plays an important part in, so it’s rewarding to know I’m contributing to that aim when I turn up for work every day. We’re not just keeping pace with the net zero transition, we’re working to lead the way in meeting the needs of employers".

🌍 We are marking and proudly sharing the contribution that our electrical and plumbing apprenticeships make to a low carbon economy.
JTL apprentices learn critical skills across a range of energy efficient technologies, such as electric vehicles and heat pumps, which require technical skills to install and maintain.
The Installation Electrician and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship is one of six ‘gold standard’ programmes awarded the King’s Coronation Emblem last year. Likewise, our Plumbing and Heating apprenticeship has been designed with industry to meet increasing demand for skills in renewables and green technologies.
The building services engineering sector is at the forefront of the green transition, and a career in our industry will have a real impact towards a more sustainable future.

We recently opened the doors to our newest training centre in Colchester, the 14th in our network.
The Colchester site has repurposed what was previously a call centre into a fully equipped training hub where we will deliver electrical apprenticeships; uniting local employers with apprentices who can add value to their business.
JTL is stepping up to the challenge of equipping learners with essential green skills, and employers taking on an apprentice are helping to shape the future of the building services engineering sector.
Take a look at some of the highlights from our opening event, where local school groups and organisations joined us to see the new facilities.

This International Women in Engineering Day, we're shining the spotlight on JTL apprentice, Alice Rose.
Alice is currently in the second year of her Electrical Apprenticeship with JTL and her employer, Arma Connect, and is encouraging other women to explore engineering as a potential career path.
She recently shared some advice, to hopefully inspire the next generation of female electricians: ""There are so many options with a career in engineering, you can start with one thing and then branch into another that suits you... I would say to any woman considering a career in engineering, particularly an apprenticeship, go for it – you won’t look back”.

There are important changes coming to the Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician apprenticeship standard this month.
The changes are in response to emerging technologies, such as in renewable energy, and will make sure apprentices have the most in-demand skills for the net zero transition and are also able to maintain existing plumbing and heating systems.
