Today we celebrate a lost ancient oak in Sherwood Forest. The Greendale Oak.
This once mighty tree stood on the Welbeck Eatate. In 1724 Henry Bentinck 1st Duke of Portland is reputed to have acted on a bet made at a dinner party, that the tree was so large he could drive a ‘carriage and four’ through the tree. To prove his bet he had his woodsmen cut an arch 6′ 3” wide and 10′ 3” high through its trunk.
The "Greendale Oak" was so named from its growing in a valley of that name near Welbeck
In 1779 Major Hayman Rooke* records "This famous oak is thought to be above 700 years old, and from its appearance, there is every reason to suppose it has attained to that age at least. The circumference of the trunk above the arch os 35 feet 3 inches, width about the middle 6 feet 3 inches, height to the top branch 54 feet”.
However, the savage attack by the Duke had shortened the trees natural life-span and the nineteenth century the tree was all but dead. Such was its bulk, its remains did not finally disappear until the mid 20th century.
Now the Greendale Oak lives on ( in name only ) as the Greeendake Oak pub in the village of Cuckney.

We say thank you and farewell to an ancient oak which fell recently.
One of the last veteran trees of the Royal Forest of Knaresborough, Yorkshire, fell to the ground last week.
The oak tree, in a field off Hall Lane at Blubberhouses, is believed to be around 400 years old, meaning it was mature when the royal hunting Forest of Knaresborough was dismembered and sold off in 1770.
Hollowed out and rotting at its base, it is thought to have fallen victim to the recent dry weather.
The tree is included in the Ancient Tree Inventory, which is maintained by the Woodland Trust, and is listed as measuring 5.67m (18ft 7in) around its trunk.
May she rest in peace

URGENT HELP REQUIRED: I have just arrived in the UK for some filming about the history of duelling and have hit a problem. Circumstances outside our control have led to a last-minute cancellation of some performers on Wednesday 20th September.
I am looking for a couple of people in 15th century armour to perform a Judicial Duel. My preference would be for a longsword fight, though pollaxes would be acceptable.
The filming location is in the Nottingham/Chesterfield area. I’m afraid that our budget is pretty tight but if you are interested and can do it, message me or e-mail directly to [email protected] and we can talk further. I will need to see images of your kit and also a video of your fight.
There may be other scenarios that need peopling, but for this morning, let’s see there is who can step up to this challenge. Thank you
