Argyll Pottery
After 26 years working with the Gaff family @ Argyll Pottery,Hugh MacTavish has now taken over the running of the pottery
Got some 1/2pt mugs thrown today.
1pt jugs handled, now they can dry to leather hard slowly for a couple of days before I glaze the insides of them. then they can dry out completely before I glaze the outside of them. ( I raw glaze my pots .)
One minute you are throwing pots in the spring sunshine, the next a huge hail shower and a power cut....
Made a start on the bigger pots today.
Unpacked the wood kiln today, overall it looks quite a good one.
The first day of Spring and it was perfect weather for firing the wood kiln. Glad to get it fired eventually , I think I've been lucky with the lymes as the anti biotics seem to be working well and apart from a day or two when I got a bit tired I'm now fine and the 16 hour shift firing the kiln went as normal.
The pottery will be closed on Wed the 20th March, I will be firing the wood kiln , open again on Thursday 21st.
Finished off packing the wood kiln today, I hope to fire it as soon as I can, but there's no point in risking 2 months work so I'm only going to fire when I'm fit enough to face it. So tomorrow I will mix up some clay and make a start on working out the next making cycle.
Well it took a bit longer than usual but managed to get the back stack done.
I had planned to start packing the kiln today but a tick bite has given me Lymes disease so a trip to the doctors and 3 weeks on anti biotics. So hopefully I can start packing it tomorrow and get this firing through.
Pots ready for the wood kiln, now just got to sort the kiln fire boxes out, get the dry wood stacked by it and then get it packed and fired.
This week was taken up with glazing , now over 600 pots done so next week hopefully I can start thinking about packing the wood kiln.
Cones set for the kiln, now just a bit of brush work and quite a bit of glazing to get on with .
A dry day today, so out with the saw and got some slabs cut for the kiln. Thanks to my brother John MacTavish for the slab wood from his mill.
Egg cups thrown today, these are always a good seller in the showroom.
Its never that much fun pulling handles in frosty weather, but they had to get done.
Wishing all our friends old and new a very happy new year. See you in 2024.
Wishing all a very merry Christmas from us here at the pottery .
Mugs finished off. For this making cycle I will have a lot of handles to do so its a good start to get these done and out the way.
The Pottery showroom will be open at 1pm until 5.30pm tomorrow.
Pottery will be open from 10-2 today
The showroom full of pots, this is just the end product of a process. I start every making cycle by mixing my own blend of clays into the clay body I use , all my glazes are made from raw materials and they are to recipes made for the clay body and single wood firing in mind , being a one man band I like working this way as if anything goes wrong I only have myself to blame and apart from mining the raw materials I can honestly say I've made these from scratch even cutting and drying the fuel for the kiln. When most folk see the finished pot they have no idea the amount of work that goes into producing it. This is why I like selling just from the pottery, as when folk come in to buy something they are not just buying a pot they are also seeing where it was created and talking the the person that made it.
Unpacked the wood kiln today, overall a good firing. This old kiln and myself are a good team and after 165 firings we have built up an understanding of each others ways quite well.
Kiln fired today, a nice firing with no dramas at all, even the weather was perfect.
Finished packing the wood kiln today, I plan to fire it on Sunday .
The showroom at the pottery looking nice and full.
The pottery will be closed tomorrow morning, I will be open again in the afternoon at 3pm.
The showroom is looking nice and full again after last weeks wood firing.
I will be firing the wood kiln tomorrow, so the pottery will be closed. Open again on Friday and if all goes to plan there should be more pots in the showroom fresh from the kiln by Saturday afternoon.
