History
The Railway Inn is a Grade II listed building which has retained its character since its opening in the early 19th Century.
The country pub has taken its name from the Tanat Valley railway line which was operating in 1904. The railway line passed through Penybontfawr respectively on weekdays, and occasionally at weekends and bank holidays, with extra trains running on the first wednesday of each month due to market day.
The railway line orginially carried passengers, however, its main function was to provide access to remote areas such as Llangynog , and transport facilities for the slate production and agriculture in these surrounding areas. The line closed between 1951 and 1952.
Some of The Railway Inn’s outbuildings were also used at the time for the production of grain, corn and wheat.
