Happy birthday to Oxford University's first ever NBA player, George Munroe. George who passed away in 2014 would have been 99 today. He played two seasons in the NBA for the St. Louis Bombers (1946-47) and the Boston Celtics (1947-48). He averaged 6.1 points in 80 career games.
George came to Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship and graduated with a BA and an MA from Christ Church.
2021 marks the 100th anniversary of England’s oldest basketball competition, The Varsity Game.
The Varsity Game is the basketball equivalent of the Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race. Every year the Dark Blues of Oxford battle the Light Blues of Cambridge on the hardwood for the highly coveted Varsity Cup.
To emphasise the significance of The Varsity Game, former Oxford University basketball player and 2x NBA champion Bill Bradley once told Sports Illustrated: “This game is the only one I care about.” For Oxford and Cambridge, it is the highlight of the basketball calendar and no other game has greater importance.
