PULP is an exhibition about paper in its wider uses, coming up

I'm excited to be showing 'Home', a new altered atlas which, as its name suggests, explores what a sense of home might mean. Whether it is a sense of security and comfort or, particularly over recent years, a sense of confinement.

The repetition and familiarity of the house form is in contrast to the multitude of associations the idea of home can evoke; is it a place, a person, a memory or a feeling?

This promises to be a fabulous exhibition and I'm looking forward to sharing more images with you!

Exhibition runs from 20th Jan to 13th April 2024

A final post of the year to say thank you for all the likes & comments & to everyone who visited exhibitions, chatted at open studios & maybe even bought a piece of work. I’m always so grateful that you spend time & energy doing these things & I’m looking forward to sharing more with you in 2024. Happy New Year!

Here’s my top 9 highlights from 2023:

Clockwise from top left: An early experiment using text in my papercutting. The reel of this work was the closest to viral any of my posts will ever get! Don’t know what happened but it was fun!

Papermaking at the Paper Foundation in Kendal was a joyful experience & spending time with a wonderful group of artists, writers & academics at the ‘Paper & Poetry: Invention Through Craft’ Symposium was incredibly inspiring

Presenting at ‘Paper Alive!’ the IAPMA a Congress in Dresden. This kind of thing is waaay out of my comfort zone but the enthusiasm of the other attendees, & simply the experience of being surrounded by so many artists also obsessed with paper, was wonderful!

I was so delighted to have my work accepted for the RWA Open Exhibition in Bristol this year; a real honour. The exhibition is on until 14th Jan

A stone carving residency in Portland was a real highlight of the summer. Despite being a very different medium to work in the experience was rewarding, the weather & light amazing & I couldn’t have hoped for a better group of artists to spend the week with

I've enjoyed every opportunity to exhibit my altered books this year, including the beautiful setting of Delamore Arts in Devon where I showed 'Ways to be Saved' in their annual exhibition

I’ve also appreciated being able to exhibit my layered papercuts in various places but especially the lovely Kingfisher Art in Chipping Norton

Exhibiting 'We Came to be Here' in the Oxford Art Society Member’s Exhibition in the spring was a lovely experience. The annual exhibition is always full of amazing local talent & fantastic to be part of

Centre: Having my work accepted for the Viviane Fontaine International Paper Triennial in Switzerland was a real thrill & being awarded 3rd prize was beyond all my expectations. I’m not sure I’ll be able to top this in 2024...!

I've been updating my website over the last couple of days with the work I currently have available.

I have a shop page for my layered papercuts and one for my map and book works (links in my bio)

There are some wintry layered papercuts and, one of my favourite book pieces, 'On the Darkest Night', a page from an atlas showing the stars in the northern hemisphere with a short redacted poem cut from the text underneath.

I've been working on a few Miniscapes recently, which are tiny layered papercuts measuring between 4-6cm high.

Over the last couple of years I've focussed on making these for commissions but I decided to create a new collection which I'll be showing on 2nd-3rd December at the Art Christmas fair in Summertown. After that they'll be on my website but DM me if you'd like more information before then.

If you have any suggestions of favourite buildings you think would work well as a mini papercut I'd love to hear! I'm always looking for inspiration.

I've just updated my website with available work, including these pieces cut from the pages of a book, each with a small piece of poetry cut from the text.

I love how they're floated over black mountboard which highlights the intricacy of the cut paper and gives a sense of depth.

See the link in my bio to visit my website where you'll also find my available layered papercuts. If you have any questions just pop me a message!

Today I'm thinking about thinking. More specifically, the thinking behind the making process and what happens in the act of making. I was going to post a picture of a lovely finished piece of work but unfortunately thinking doesn't always result in an outcome and my efforts are frustrated. So instead I've posted this clip of me searching for inspiration in a section of text taken from a book.

When I look at a piece of text in this context I'm looking for a theme or a feeling in a few of the words that will tie themselves together into a poem or piece of prose, similar to redacted poetry. It's a slow process which often needs two or three attempts but, on rare occasions, the words will be waiting for me and I can progress to the next stage.

As part of my PhD research I often film myself working, looking for insights into the making process so that I don't have to rely solely on memory to describe what was happening. When nothing happens it's frustrating but important too.

I'm having a little play around with different backgrounds for this papercut of Oxford's Dreaming Spires....

Which is your favourite? The map of Oxford, swirling blue, swirling black, fireworks or a flock of giant birds?

A lovely life drawing session last night with the

This is a 45 min pencil drawing and a 1 hour with coloured pencil which felt like a bit of a struggle.

I'd like to get to more sessions to experiment with mark-making more but I love the process of finding the form on the paper.

Thanks to the group and model!

Enjoyed setting up yesterday (with lots of help from my mum!) for the Oxfordshire Craft Guild exhibition at 78 Derngate in Northampton.

Very happy to get my new Blue Half Moon up on the wall and to see one of my papercuts on the front page of their website!

It's a stunning setting and a lovely place to explore if you can get there.

Exhibition runs 14th Oct - 22nd Dec 2023, open Tues-Sun 10am-5pm

The RWA170 Open Exhibition in Bristol runs until 14th Jan 2024 and you will find my paper sculpture 'A Free-Floating Minute' in amongst some amazing artwork!

There's a poem hidden in the layers, cut from the text of the pages I used. Much of it is obscured, but I know it's there;

Where waves part
Nothing
Is as we believed

Now come great changes

A celestial dragon
in darkest shadow

A free-floating minute
A never-ending life

Time whirls

Years vanish and pulse
Eclipsing sunlight

Warm soft winds blow

Hello scalpel!

This is the first bit of papercutting I've done since August and I'm happy to be back to making little houses. This is the beginning of a new altered book sculpture for a paper exhibition next year that I'm very excited about and will share more with you soon!

Limestone pavements on Newbiggin Crags, what an incredible landscape! Timeless and slightly surreal, with beautiful views all the way across to Silverdale and Morecombe Bay.

I'd forgotten that in this part of the country there will be at least one downpour even on a day with no rain forecast but we sheltered under a tree and had a flask of coffee until it passed.

This was the perfect place for me to reflect on a busy September before starting a new term.

This week I had the absolute pleasure of taking part in the Paper and Poetry: Invention Through Craft symposium at the Paper Foundation in Cumbria.

Such an inspiring event and an opportunity to discuss research projects, try out papermaking, visit Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Foundation and eat amazing cake!

Thank you to Tom and Sam for sharing your knowledge and expertise and for making us so welcome.

Thanks also to Georgina, Orietta and Vona from Cambridge University Centre for Material Texts and all the other attendees whose enthusiasm and passion for paper will continue to inspire me!

Over the summer I was working on lots of house forms made from pages from a book. I enjoy the repetition of form, particularly because the imagery and text in each house is very different.

These houses will be part of a larger piece of work that sits within a book but it's been interesting playing around with composition while they're still free!

This week I presented some of my PhD research to the IAPMA Paper Alive! Congress at the University of Fine Arts in Dresden.

Thanks so much to IAPMA for organising such an inspiring event and to everyone who came to listen and ask questions afterwards.

Today is the last day of a stone carving residency I've been doing in Portland, Dorset. It's been such a lovely week - lovely company and lovely weather! - and completely immersive.

This is what has found its way out of my lump of stone and I'm pretty happy with it! It's been so far removed from my usual papercutting, although process and removal of material are common threads running through.
