Today I'm thinking about thinking. More specifically, the thinking behind the making process and what happens in the act of making. I was going to post a picture of a lovely finished piece of work but unfortunately thinking doesn't always result in an outcome and my efforts are frustrated. So instead I've posted this clip of me searching for inspiration in a section of text taken from a book. When I look at a piece of text in this context I'm looking for a theme or a feeling in a few of the words that will tie themselves together into a poem or piece of prose, similar to redacted poetry. It's a slow process which often needs two or three attempts but, on rare occasions, the words will be waiting for me and I can progress to the next stage. As part of my PhD research I often film myself working, looking for insights into the making process so that I don't have to rely solely on memory to describe what was happening. The RWA170 Open Exhibition in Bristol runs until 14th Jan 2024 and you will find my paper sculpture 'A Free-Floating Minute' in amongst some amazing artwork! There's a poem hidden in the layers, cut from the text of the pages I used.
