Oxford Flute Summer School

Oxford Flute Summer School is a great place to spend a week of your summer playing the flute

17/08/2024

And just like that the Oxford Flute Summer School has finished for 2024!

Our students were kept busy with plenty of masterclasses, technique sessions, 1:1 lessons, ensemble rehearsals, flute choir and concerts. It was a real treat to watch our students grow musically, learn from each other and perform with confidence and smiles on their faces. Well done to all of our students, it was a pleasure having you all and we hope you enjoyed the course 😄🪈

A massive thank you to all of our teaching staff Kate Hill, Sue Thomas, Robert Winn, Carrie Cook Hensel and Sinead Walsh, to our pianists Sally Goodworth, Richard Shaw and Radim Panchoca and our Director Katie Bycroft for organising such a wonderful week 😄🎶

We look forward to seeing new and familiar faces next year!

P.S. Watch this space, as we will be sharing lots of exciting video material over the next few months 📹

Meet the staff on our course - Sue Thomas
Sue began playing the flute aged 10, attaining Grade 8 less than two years later. While at school she studied privately with Douglas Townshend, then accepted an undergraduate place on the joint course at the RNCM - Royal Northern College of Music and Manchester University, studying flute with Trevor Wye and piccolo with Pat Morris. On graduation she was awarded the Principal’s Prize and then continued her studies with William Bennett at the Royal Academy of Music, where she won the Flute Prize and was the recipient of both the Paddy Purcell Award and a DipRAM. During her studies, Sue was fortunate to acquire scholarships from the Countess of Munster Trust, Welsh Arts Council, Ian Fleming and Myra Hess Trusts.

Upon leaving the Royal Academy of Music, Sue quickly became in demand as a freelance player with the London orchestras before joining the London Philharmonic Orchestra as Sub-Principal Flute in 2001. Her role in the orchestra has involved extensive work as Principal Flute, including recordings of a complete Brahms cycle with Marin Alsop, as well as operatic recordings of Rosenkavalier, The Rake’s Progress and Ariadne at Glyndebourne.

Sue has appeared on various occasions at the Wigmore Hall in the series Soloists of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and together with Nick Carpenter premiered Shadows, a concerto for flute and clarinet by Peter Eötvös at the Royal Festival Hall in 2011. Sue has been a Professor at the Royal College of Music for 15 years and was awarded an ARAM for services to music in 2010. She regularly gives classes and examines in many of the British conservatoires as well as tutoring on the The National Youth Orchestra of Wales. Sue plays a Louis Lot flute, aspiring to continue the French Flute tradition that William Bennett and Trevor Wye championed.
