How about today we make some pretend sushi? What ingredients will our colours represent - we'll have to research what types of sushi there are! We could make some traditional accompaniments too such as pickled ginger. Then we could make a decorated menu and set up a restaurant. And even make/eat some real sushi (can be simple with carrot and cucumber!), or alternative versions with fruit or rice cereal - there are loads of different recipes for children online. We could watch a video of professional sushi-making. And then maybe do some chopstick challenges..

There are lots of ways to make the sushi: rolled up fillings with cotton wool rice and black foam nori, or cut out and stick the fillings on the top of the cotton wool, or use scrunched-up white tissue paper or foam sheet instead of cotton wool, or use ribbon or tape for the nori, or use pens or playdough/clay... your child will come up with even more imaginative ways!
This set includes everything you need to make some yummy sushi (except sellotape/glue!): LOTS of foam/felt/corrugated card (not pictured), cotton wool, multi-pack of chopsticks (more than pictured), mat, papercraft bits, a selection of mini patterned papers (more than pictured), a wooden rice spoon and a fan. (I haven't included the four pieces of sushi that I made (pictured), as that was just an example, and my daughter greatly enjoyed playing with them in her toy kitchen later!)

The beauty of a more open-ended approach to a dressing-up box is that it helps children to be whatever they want to be, led by their imagination and creativity. They can assume different roles on different days, finding the resources to act out their own stories and being inspired to create them, and children are freed from the gender stereotypes and pre-existing character roles of typical shop-bought costumes. Play can easily evolve and be flexible. (Although obviously shop-bought costumes can be fun too!)
