A study using cutting-edge hyperpolarised xenon MR imaging has identified persistent damage to the lungs of COVID-19 patients at least three months after they were discharged from hospital, and for some patients even longer.
This damage was not detected by routine CT scans and clinical tests, and the patients would consequently normally be told their lungs are normal.
The studyβs Principal Investigator is Prof Fergus Gleeson, Professor of Radiology at the University of Oxford and Consultant Radiologist at OUH.
His team, who are supported by the NIHR Oxford BRC, has now begun testing patients who were not hospitalised with COVID-19 but who have been attending long COVID clinics.

"Our collective strength throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has been in our shared sense of purpose which has enabled us to pull together during the darkest times."
Today sees the launch of 'Stories from the COVID-19 pandemic - ' - an e-Book which tells the story of our response to COVID-19, created with the generous support of our friends at Oxford Hospitals Charity.
You can read it here: http://orlo.uk/c6F10
It is also available via the article on the front page of our website, ouh.nhs.uk.
It gives us an opportunity to focus on our unique partnership with the University of Oxford and the groundbreaking COVID-19 research which has taken place in Oxford.
It also profiles some of our teams which are not always visible - as they work 'behind the front line' - and highlights the invaluable support of the wider community in Oxfordshire for NHS staff throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thank you, all of you, for your support, and we hope you enjoy our e-Book.
