Earlier this month, our OxNet Access Week residential coincided with the 400th anniversary of Pembroke College’s foundation ceremony back in 1624.
Having been founded out of the benefaction of a man keen for more students to attend Oxford, it seemed only appropriate that the day was celebrated amidst our modern-day commitment to access!
Find out more about the day (which included a re-enactment of the original opening ceremony!) and the story of how Pembroke was founded in today’s 400 Hours drop at the link below.
400 Years On: Recreating the Pembroke College Foundation Ceremony 400 years ago, Pembroke College was formally opened as the newest college of the University of Oxford. To celebrate the occasion, we invited our OxNet Access Week residential students to join us in 17th century music, dance, and a re-enactment of the original opening ceremony.
That college looks familiar… 👀
Congratulations to everyone receiving their A Level results today! And for those of you who found out you’re coming to Pembroke, we’re so excited to meet you in October 🤩
But whatever the outcome, we hope you’re so proud of yourself for all the hard work you’ve put in over the past two years, and we know you’ll end up on the right path ❤️
Yesterday marked 400 years since the Foundation Ceremony of Pembroke College back in 1624! 🎉
To celebrate the occasion, our OxNet Access Week participants were treated to a reenactment of the speech given at the original Ceremony, as well as 17th century music and dance led by musical group Passamezzo!
So lovely to be back at Pembroke College, Oxford to celebrate the 400th anniversary of their foundation day.
We read an oration first given by Thomas Browne in 1624, and and provided some 17th Century music and dance.
The event fell during their Access Week, so we persuaded about 100 sixth formers to dance with us.
Thank you to all involved!
Summer finally made it to Pembroke☀️☀️☀️
(Shoutout to the wisteria for having a second go - apparently this is called ‘remontant flowering’, when plants bloom twice in a season due to unusual weather!)
📣400 Hours is back! Today we’re taking a look back at last month’s Pembroke 400 Festival, with a beautiful video showcasing the highlights of the day.
If you couldn’t make it (or you just want to reminisce) you can watch the video at the link below!

Four centuries later, hundreds of guests gathered across our four quads to celebrate the four-hundredth anniversary of the College’s foundation.

We recently welcomed our 1950s and 60s alumni back to College for their Decade Gaudy - so what was Pembroke like in the Swinging Sixties?
A time when a trip to the College Library only took you as far as Broadgates Hall in Chapel Quad, when North Quad was brand new (ish - the buildings themselves weren’t!) and when the College was rather more leafy than it is today.
But some things never change - just look at our iconic window boxes in full bloom, just like they are right now! 🌸💐🌻

Today marks 400 years since Pembroke College received its Royal Charter from King James I, the beginning of our four centuries of community, research and impact that bring us to the Pembroke we know today.
As the day gets underway, our celebrations are only beginning. Today’s Pembroke 400 Festival will see a range of the most preeminent Pembrokians of our time sharing their own research and impact, from Chief Medical Officer Professor Sir Chris Whitty discussing the latest medical advances all the way to current Fellows such as Professor Lynda Mugglestone exploring the real origins of Samuel Johnson’s supposed ‘dictionary desk’.
Whether you’re with us in person today, or raising a glass from afar, we hope you will join us in celebrating this momentous occasion in Pembroke’s history.
It’s Open Day! Come and say hi to our students, our tutors (see our stories for timings!) and our staff who are all here ready to welcome you to Pembroke.
