From Ancient Greece to Cheltenham -

The Caryatid, an architectural support sculpted in the form of a female figure, depicted in lot 131 of this week’s Cotswold Living auction: David Bethell’s ‘Printers Garden’, linocut, numbered 8/25 and dated 1998; is certainly reminiscent of the 32 Caryatids that can be found in Cheltenham’s Montpellier. Montpellier’s Caryatids date circa 1840 and are based on models from the Acropolis in Athens.

With the start of the summer, this stunning 9ct gold mesh purse, lot 321 in next week’s Country House Sale, would make the perfect accessory to an outfit for an upcoming special event.

The purse features an elongated link chain handle, each link and the frame of the purse bears full hallmark, 24cm overall, 155g approx overall. Estimate £1,700 - £2,000.
