With the departure of Bangladesh's Prime Minister following intensifying student protests, it's a good time to reread this 2020 article by David Jackman analysing why such movements posed a serious threat to the ruling party.

The article explores the history of student protest in Bangladesh and draws on two case studies – 2018 protests over public sector job quotas and road safety – and the government’s response to analyse their potential role in confronting authoritarian rule.

His research in Ghana found that although community inclusion is encouraged, communities are barely recognised in the actual policymaking process.

The conversations are underpinned by a power imbalance where local voices are marginalised and cultures are homogenised in top-down planning.

Mexican government failing to provide decent jobs for vulnerable youth – leaving the door open to cartel recruitment 11/06/2024

Raúl Zepeda Gil writes for The Conversation UK about governmental efforts to reduce the recruitment of young people into Mexican cartels.

His research has found that many homicide inmates were not 'idle' before joining gangs, but in fact were working in precarious conditions that offered few opportunities for social mobility.

Our Story

The Oxford Department of International Development (ODID) is the focus for postgraduate teaching and research on development at the University of Oxford.

We were the top development studies department in the UK in the government’s national assessment of research excellence in both 2008 (Research Assessment Exercise) and 2014 (Research Excellence Framework), with most of our research rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.

ODID comprises a core of some 25 academic staff engaged in teaching and research, together with 50 research staff in four research groups that are at the forefront of their fields: the Refugee Studies Centre, Young Lives, the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative and the Technology and Management Centre for Development. ODID and the Department of Economics also lead, with the LSE, the large International Growth Centre established by DfID. These centres have support from key research partner institutions in developing countries, and engage in extensive policy advisory work for governments, international agencies and civil society organisations.

We teach around 260 postgraduate students on doctoral and master's programmes. These programmes are research-led, and combine rigorous research methods training with applied thesis work which prepares students for both academic and policy careers. We are also home to a considerable number of post-doctoral fellows and academic visitors from a wide range of developing countries.
