Last weekend we hosted our annual dinner at St Hilda's College. The evening brought together over 70 past and present shooters from Oxford and Cambridge University rifle clubs, and was filled with laughter, stories, and great food. We would like to thank everyone that attended the dinner for helping make it an amazing night!

The deadline for our annual black-tie dinner is now just days away. The event takes place in Michaelmas each year and is a chance for members of OURC, alumni of the club, and Cambridge, to come together for a formal dinner in one of Oxford's colleges. This year the event is being held in St Hilda's and is a great opportunity for Freshers to meet existing members of the club, as well as getting to know members of the Cambridge rifle clubs and alumni of OURC.

All members should have been emailed an invite to the event with details of how to RSVP. Please let us know if you have not received the invite or have any questions regarding the event!

OURC are pleased to reveal our Michaelmas Social Termcard. We host socials every Tuesday as a chance to catch-up outside the range and meet more of the club, the first of these being a trip to Royal Oak this Tuesday (more details to follow)! We also have several Saturday socials throughout term, including our annual black-tie dinner next month. Feel free to drop us a message with any questions you have about our socials!

Tag yourself!

This year, OURC had another strong turnout for the 154th Imperial Meeting and presented two strong teams for the Humphry and Chancellors’ Varsities. Posts about these, as well as our antics from two weeks on camp, will follow soon - we’ve all taken a bit of time off to recover and manage . Follow for upcoming posts!!

Fullbore season means the return of recoil.

Smallbore allows for our members to form a good foundation in key principles such as trigger control, natural alignment, and breathing. These are even more important when transitioning to fullbore shooting. Without a firm foundation, this can make details less precise and more uncomfortable. It is important that these factors be well established in order to absorb the recoil of the more powerful rounds used in both Target and Match Rifle.

It’s also possible, when starting to train in fullbore, that the larger recoil and response to this induces error by developing flinch. This can be trained out with practice (anyone for snapcap roulette?) and improvements to natural alignment (to further reduce discomfort during a detail).

Follow along for our adventures in fullbore during the upcoming Imperial!

Will we ever stop about how much we love North London Rifle Club? Probably not.

This often becomes a second home for members of OURC when training or competing at Bisley, with several members going on to join as members after graduating. Whether for a formal dinner or a cup of tea between details, both the team and members at the North always welcome us with a smile and have taken amazing care of us over the years. We look forward to seeing you all again at the Imperial!

(This post isn’t sponsored, we just love them!!)

Practice for the Imperial intensifies.

Today, six members of OURC returned to Stickledown to participate in the Jamboree, arranged by the North London Rifle Club. As well as being a great opportunity to practice in challenging wind conditions, the warm weather provided the chance to also experience the temperatures we will face in the upcoming Hopton and how these influence our equipment. Congratulations go to Match Rifle Captain, Emma, and President, Asia, for placing 2nd and 3rd in the Under 25s Aggregate (with 211.14 and 207.12 respectively). They were both hot on the heels of OURC Alumnus and former Match Rifle Captain, Thomas, which could make for a hard fought Imperial Meeting. The day was concluded with another amazing dinner, also from the team at the North London Rifle Club, which definitely helped to lift our spirits after another full on day on the range.

Thank you again to both the members and team at the North London Rifle Club - for both the organisation of the day and the support both on and off the range, we are all incredibly grateful, and we are very much looking forward to seeing you again at the Imperial Meeting!

Here’s some more information on the work that we’ve put in that has culminated in being named 2023 Club of the Year!!!

Thank you again to Oxford University Sport and This Girl Can for all their support in our efforts to increase our reach and show how diverse and inclusive the sport of target shooting is. Thanks also go to Oxford University Sport and Oxford Town Hall for hosting us for . We had a really wonderful evening and it was a great way to celebrate our efforts over the last year.

We look forward to sharing our continued efforts at next year’s event!

Making the leap from smallbore to fullbore can be a challenge.

Easter Bisley gave our members a great opportunity to learn about shooting in variable conditions. As well as cold mornings and wet weather practice, learning to wind read is a key skill for those competing in both team and individual matches. We’re looking forward to putting what we’ve learnt into practice at this year’s Imperial Meeting!

With the spring comes the changeable weather.

Over the course of Easter Bisley, members of OURC spent time fighting the elements to complete their details. Though challenging, this provided great wet weather practice, which has already been useful in fullbore training and matches (see the Spring Meeting). We’re looking forward to competing again soon, and are ready to face whatever Mother Nature will throw at us.

Thank you to everyone who came along to our social at The Crown yesterday! As well as the usual pints and laughs we took part in the first (hopefully of many!) OURC pub quizzes: ‘Losing the Plot’ (name still a work in progress). This came from the hard work of our wonderful Social Secretary and involves a combination of pop quiz knowledge and plotting practice. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and are looking forward to the next instalment!

Congratulations go to the Treasurer for her win with 54.02v (13/15 correct answers)!
