Fullbore season means the return of recoil.

Smallbore allows for our members to form a good foundation in key principles such as trigger control, natural alignment, and breathing. These are even more important when transitioning to fullbore shooting. Without a firm foundation, this can make details less precise and more uncomfortable. It is important that these factors be well established in order to absorb the recoil of the more powerful rounds used in both Target and Match Rifle.

It’s also possible, when starting to train in fullbore, that the larger recoil and response to this induces error by developing flinch. This can be trained out with practice (anyone for snapcap roulette?) and improvements to natural alignment (to further reduce discomfort during a detail).

Follow along for our adventures in fullbore during the upcoming Imperial!

Will we ever stop about how much we love North London Rifle Club? Probably not. This often becomes a second home for members of OURC when training or competing at Bisley, with several members going on to join as members after graduating. Whether for a formal dinner or a cup of tea between details, both the team and members at the North always welcome us with a smile and have taken amazing care of us over the years. We look forward to seeing you all again at the Imperial! (This post isn’t sponsored, we just love them!!) #OxfordUniversityRifleClub #OxfordUniversitySport #DarkBlue #NorthLondonRifleClub #NLRC #Fullbore #MatchRifle #TargetRifle #Bisley #ShoeTheTabs #AtTheNorth

Making the leap from smallbore to fullbore can be a challenge. Easter Bisley gave our members a great opportunity to learn about shooting in variable conditions. As well as cold mornings and wet weather practice, learning to wind read is a key skill for those competing in both team and individual matches. We’re looking forward to putting what we’ve learnt into practice at this year’s Imperial Meeting! #OxfordUniversityRifleClub #OxfordUniversitySport #DarkBlue #Bisley #BisleyShootingGround #TargetRifle #ShoeTheTabs #InCrosswinds

With the spring comes the changeable weather. Over the course of Easter Bisley, members of OURC spent time fighting the elements to complete their details. Though challenging, this provided great wet weather practice, which has already been useful in fullbore training and matches (see the Spring Meeting). We’re looking forward to competing again soon, and are ready to face whatever Mother Nature will throw at us. #OxfordUniversityRifleClub #OxfordUniversitySport #DarkBlue #TargetRifle #Bisley #ShoeTheTabs #InAllWeathers

We’re off on an adventure! To round out a term filled with varsities, OURC spent 9th week at Bisley training for the upcoming fullbore season! Be sure to follow along for Easter Bisley clips and match updates throughout Trinity Term!! #DarkBlue #OxfordUniversityRifleClub #OxfordUniversitySports #Bisley #ShoeTheTabs

And with that, we’ve already reached the end of the year! It’s been an amazing first term at OURC, starting the smallbore season with record breaking membership numbers for the club (with lots of thanks to This Girl Can and Oxford University Sport for their support!). Blues and Devs have gone straight into postals and freshers have now completed their grouping competitions, showing huge progress over the course of the term. We hosted our very first alumni match also had our annual joint dinner with CURA and CUSBC in November - a wonderful evening and thank you again to all who attended! To conclude the term, we had the first (hopefully of many!) Devs vs Schools match against Oakham. Thank to our secretary and members of staff at Oakham for arranging and supporting this. It was a great opportunity to get more of our Dev Squad familiar with shoulder to shoulder competitions ahead of the coming varieties next term. From all of us at OURC, we hope you’ve enjoyed getting a glimpse into what we’ve been up to. We hope you have a wonderful New Year and be sure to stay tuned for what we’ve got in store in Hilary! #OxfordUniversity #OxfordUniversitySport #ThisOxfordGirlCan #OxfordUniversityRifleClub #DarkBlue

[Video Description: Emily, wearing a green t-shirt, dungarees and glasses goes to step out of her room before retreating sheepishly at the enquiries of the audio. She re-emerges wearing a dark blue sweater embroidered with the three feathers of the OURC crest and her name, now looking much happier and posing with a flourish. The video cover shows the heat transfer text of ‘Oxford University Rifle Club across her upper back.] #OxfordUniversitySport #OxfordUniversityRifleClub #DarkBlue #Stash

OURC Dinners
The news is out! Oxford University Rifle Club will be holding our Annual Dinner on Saturday the 19th of November at St Peter's College. This is a great opportunity to meet lots of the alumni and learn even more about the history of OURC, as well as being a good excuse to dress in your finery and have some really wonderful food. To give you a flavour of what's in store, here's our Treasurer, Emily, with some highlights from the formals at the Cambridge Cup, which was shot last summer. If you have yet to receive information about this, please get in touch with the secretary ([email protected]). Looking forward to seeing you all there! [Video description: The treasurer, Emily, talks about the formal dinners offered by the rifle club while doing her makeup. She poses in three different dresses before showing the college these dinners were held in (Selwyn College, Cambridge), the food provided, alumni and members smiling and chatting, the table spreads with lit candles, and one of the alumni petting a dog at the drinks held after the dinner.]

At OURC, it’s always safety first! Every taster session always starts with a safety briefing and you are supervised throughout the course of your shoot. (We also filmed this completely safely! Swipe to see!) [ID: Video 1 - Adam in a club sweater and Asia in a shooting jacket talk you through and demonstrate the process of shooting safely.]

What have we got in store for the coming year at Oxford University Rifle Club? Find out more at the University Fresher's Fair - 6th and 7th of October from 09.00 to 18.00 in University Parks. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
