Homogenization in atmospheric conditions causes aeration of the mass, which then affects the further behavior of the sample over time, or the results of physicochemical tests, e.g. viscosity measurement.
โก๏ธ How to effectively deal with unwanted air in the mass?
One of the key and most effective solutions is to work with a vacuum system. The mixing and homogenization process, which takes place in a vessel closed under vacuum, causes all the air to be extracted from the system, and the final mass is smooth, airless and stable. Using such a solution also offers additional advantages such as repeatability of the process, regardless of the experience of the technologist, recording of data and easier scaling to larger production volumes, as well as obtaining the same product at laboratory scale as at production scale.

The ๐น ๐๐ฎ๐น๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ ๐น at the IKA headquarters in Staufen took place from May 16-17th, followed by the ๐๐ฎ๐น๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ one week after. For more than 10 years, we host these insightful events twice a year. Our calorimeter experts Kai-Oliver Linde (Corporate Product Manager Calorimetry), Nadina Dรถrle (Application Support) and Afrid Hoxhaj (Account Executive Calorimeter Germany) mentored the participants through the practice days.
For many years, the hands-on practical sessions have been one of the cornerstones, blending theory with real-world applications on our cutting-edge equipment. In the two-day user training course, the participants worked in small groups with like-minded people to learn how to use the calorimeter in practice based on the DIN 51900 calorimeter standard for liquid and solid fuels, which is the most important standard for Germany. The content of the practice days extended from the analytical moisture determination of an already prepared and certified IPTA sample, calibration of the calorimeter, target value guide, thermodynamic correction calculations up to the gross calorific value and net calorific value calculation.
We thoroughly investigated methods, approaches, and practical strategies to find the best solutions on how to burn the samples and achieve correct results ๐ก We understand the importance of keeping your equipment in peak shape, which is why invaluable insights on "preventive maintenance" of calorimeters and vessels were shared as well.
The Calorimeter Days focused on more theoretical topics related to calorimetry and ISO 17025 with focus on the determination of gross and net calorific value. Our guest speaker ๐๐ฟ. ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฟ. ๐ป๐ฎ๐. ๐๐ฒ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ด ๐ฆ๐๐ฐ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฑ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ has vast experience as publicly appointed and sworn in trade chemist, expert and sampler for solid fuels. He is also an expert assessor for accreditations according to ISO 17025 and much more.

๐ But how do you automate the setup of multiple devices without in-depth programming knowledge?
The IKA ๐น๐ฎ๐ฏ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐น๐ฑ๐๐ผ๐ณ๐ยฎ ๐ฒ software connects all devices via RS 232 or USB interface to a PC and controls them in a defined and standardized way. Important parameters such as temperature and time, speed and power of mixing, grinding or homogenizing, etc. can be monitored, controlled and reproduced. To automate the process, the desired parameters are specified in tabular form and the process can be started automatically.
In addition, all parameters are archived and can be documented in the form of graphs for easier interpretation of results and for the creation of reports.
