Congratulations to the Church of Scotland (CoS)!
The General Assembly have agreed to allow Ministers / Deacons to apply for licensing to perform same-sex marriages! What a milestone in the church's history!!
29 CoS presbyteries (out of 41) voted in favour of it back in 2021. Today, it was covered in Session 4 under "Report of the Committee on Overtures and Cases" and at 11:36, it became Church law! 274 for and 136 against!!
The legislation is βpermissiveβ β ministers and deacons are being given permission and no-one will be constrained to conduct a same-sex marriage.
It may be a while till CoS's first same-sex marriage takes place, but we are so happy at this forward move for equality recognising loving, committed and faithful same-sex unions! We want to thank in particular: Craig Dobney, Peter Johnson, Bryan Kerr, Scott Rennie, Paul Middleton and Lesley Stewart for their courage and their words of affirmation in favour of this legislation as well as everyone who's persevered! We rejoice in the contribution its LGBTQ+ members, elders, deacons and ministers make to the mission of God in the world.
