Starting on November 1st, I'll be adding a small price increase along with reshuffling my services to clean up my price list.
I'd also like to eventually introduce nail art tiers to help make pricing clearer, alongside some examples of what art each of those tiers will likely include.

I just wanted to make a post addressing the story in the news at the moment about gel polish allergies, it's a long one! 🙈

While the issue is much more complex than was reported by BBC, it's no surprise that gel products contain chemicals that some may be allergic to, just as some people can become allergic to lash glue, hair dyes, brow tints etc. That being said, it is easier to identify allergies from nail products before they accelerate into a serious problem.
I use a clear base on my clients so that I can always see the natural nail after filing off colour. This allows me to check the health of the nail and intervene at the earliest opportunity should anything arise.

I've been doing nails for over 5 years now. I'm qualified, certified and insured. I did a 2 year course at college which, among other things, covered anatomy and physiology, common nail allergies, disorders and conditions, and how to spot them so appropriate action can be taken.

While I've never had anyone, to my knowledge, react to the products I use, clients can react to any number of ingredients in gel products but allergy development can be avoided with proper application, minimal skin contact, proper curing and regular monitoring.

It's similar to sunbed use. You have an increased risk of cancer/skin damage but it's your choice as a consumer (in this or any other industry) whether you choose to use them. It's my job as the technician to ensure that everything I use is safe, which is why I use a brand that manufactures their products in the UK using UK chemists. These chemists formulate and rigorously test each product to ensure they're safe for use and are fully cured under their recommended lamps.
For insurance purposes, I'm required to have SDS (Safety Data Sheets) from the brand I use which detail the ingredients in each product and the levels of each.

At-Home gel kits that can be bought from Amazon are poor quality, highly allergenic products and its very likely that DIYers applying these products will not avoid the skin. Also there is no way to know by sight alone whether the gel has cured properly as gel appears cured at 50%.

Unfortunately, there is an over abundance of poor products in attractive packaging that have even made their way in to the professional market.

You should always check what your technician is using on your nails, please don't be afraid to ask questions and do as much research as you can.

It's never recommended to go anything over 4 weeks at an absolute push but needs must sometimes. Very little lifting and next to no chipping 😍

Gel overlays on Shan's natural nails using Rubber It in the shade Love Letter, with the hearts painted in Daffodil and Piglet.

I did this gorgeous all-acrylic mixed set on my niece last week using Periwinkle and Super Nova with Send N*des as the core colour.
