Working on a floor for an observation hive 🙂

My project over the winter was to build a shed with two compartments so that I had more space to store beekeeping kit (hint for new beekeepers, you *never* have enough space) and to store gardening equipment, paint etc. I was given the confidence to go ahead and build this from watching Vikkie's, videos on YouTube. It's worked really well and has freed up so much space in my workshop shed that I can now actually see and use my workbench 🙂

It was a bit of a challenge as the passageway was narrow, so each compartment needed double doors so when the door was open we could get through! After a couple of months of use I'm really pleased with how they have worked out.

Ha! Get out of that! Repairing a hive requires a bit of a glue up 🙂

Bees need water to mix with their stored honey before feeding developing larvae. Some beekeepers put out dishes of lovely clean water for their bees. However bees seem to prefer the dirtiest water they can find 🤣 Here's a bee in our garden collecting water from the top of a plastic box that's been outside all winter and has a delightful mixture of dirt and mould. As good as Champagne to bees!

The first photo shows what the frames look like after they've had the wax removed in a steam chamber late last year, all rather crusty and mouldy and generally rather yucky and the second shows another set of frames looking all clean and sterilised and ready to have new wax foundation installed before going into a beehive later in the season.

When you want to reuse frames that have already been used in a beehive you need to make sure they are clean and have been sterilised to reduce the risk of transferring disease to the hive that gets these frames.

We do this by boiling them in a solution of soda crystals so they come out sparkly and clean and ready to be used again. ✨✨✨

Probably not the job Ralph had in mind when he designed the rail square and repeat stop for tracksaws but they are the bomb at accurately cutting insulation to size for our hives for the colder winter months. I can also attest that they work equally well for more traditional woodworking tasks 🙂

Nothing to do with bees or honey, but you can't beat a good viaduct 🤣 The Ribblehead Viaduct is definitely a good one 🙂 Shame there weren't any trains running that day, so we had to drive to see it 🤦🏼
