changed my world years ago when we were at school together, and last night, she changed my life forever when she said yes to spending our lives together 🖤 Words can’t express how euphoric I feel 😌

A few shots from todays session with Maystones to finalise the recording and production portion of their new record. There’s a bunch of JZ Microphones on this 14 mic set up, but the real standouts where as always the pairs of V67 overhead, V11 as a wide spaced A/B pair, and BH1S pair in Blumlein (which sounds incredible by the way!)

Massive thanks to Ryan for the kit rental, and James for the help on location and engineering over the last couple of days - none of this would’ve happened without you both.

Another one off the new Nova Status record - super happy with how this one came out and there’s a load of experimental bits going on that worked so well!

I miss Copenhagen. I’m duper excited about how things have been recently though; after a long struggle throughout the last couple of years, the work my friends and I have put into novastatus seems to be paying off. On top of that, the plans the team and I at JZ Microphones have been drafting up are incredibly motivating and I can’t wait to see it all come to life towards the end of this year and in to 2022 🤘🏻

New single from Maystones soon to be released. This one was a lot of fun, and a real bond theme type track which if you know me well, you know I love the sound of!

Excited to announce our stand alone single ‘Walking On Red’ will be released very soon on all music platforms. We’re really happy with the way this tunes come out, something very different to what we’ve done before. Stay tuned!

Today I was at Konk Studios with Adam Greenspan dropping off some JZ Microphones for a very special session we’ll be taking much more in depth about very soon.

This studio has everything: Fairchild’s, Pultecs, LA-3A’s, EMI, original Urei 1176 silver face pairs, dbx Pro 160’s and 165’s… and on top of that, a Rupert Neve 80 Series style desk but with incredibly special 1095 pre’s and EQ section (similar to the 1084 but slight variation and sound).

I’ll be back again later this week and again after that to catch up with the band and the team, but feel very lucky to have been in the same room that Adele, Weezer, Blur and many more have made records in.

This weekend I spent with tracking an elaborate 16 mic set up utilizing literally every microphone I have available and a bunch of workhorses I’ve had for years that’s we all know and love. is an absolute unit, super consistent and super hard hitting; so much so that the raw races needed no sample reenforcement! I’ll be posting a clip soon with the recorded audio for you all to have a listen to - but in the meantime here’s some pics from the session!

My favorite day you ask? Well, that’d obviously be new gear day of course.

This time, these lovely JZ Microphones which will be put to good use for a shed load of content I have planned for our née blossoming YouTube channel, along with of course many clients for years to come.

Awesome that the track Fyzz Wallis - Solo and I worked on will be a part of the International Women’s Day airing on BBC introducing this week. I’ve had a great relationship with my own bands music with BBC Music Introducing through the years including playing their stage at Reading and Leeds in 2015 with Return To Rome so it’s great to be involved in any shape or form again.

I love snares. They’re a part of the mix I spend the most amount of time on no matter how much time I’ve been doing this for, simply because they’re so much fun to play with.

Here I’ve got Hand Hammered solid brass ‘Sledgehammer’ Black Panther 14x6.5”with a traditional skin from and it sounds like it describes in its name.

I’ve mic’d it up with the HH1 from for the body and snap, and a pencil condenser for the top end and more detail for ghost notes. As you can see from the photo, I’ve exposed the HH1 and lined the capsules up carefully to make sure the phase relationship is near perfect before replacing the cover (so as not to invite a doomed fate when Ryan inevitably hits and breaks the capsule!) and taped it to the HH1 so I only have to use one mic stand which conserves real estate around the kit too!

I want to talk much more about drums this year on the blog I write for JZ and show my mix process when it comes to building and/or preserving energy and flow throughout a composition.

Drums are a super interesting instrument. There’s literally a different sound every time you set up the mics and the kit, and so many variables to play with, including the player of course!

I remember starting out and being super confused as to how others could get a great sound and why mine didn’t sound anything like it. The biggest thing I found was two fold to a drastic improvement: Correct phase, and Tuning.

These two things factor into the sound more than any other variables aside from the player. A good rule of thumb for tuning is to make sure you go to a tone generated sound (you can find a simple sine wave tone generator on the App Store for free or cheap!) and aim to have a 3rd apart in terms of note. I’ve found this leads to a much more pleasing resonance and less ring and less gating.

With phase, the biggest one to get right is Overheads and Rooms, and they follow the same rule:
- overhead mics should ideally be 4ft from the centre of the snare in terms for distance, AND 4ft away from eachother (this is key to get the stereo image correct!)

- Room mics I try to find a place in the room that sounds like it’s carrying enough for the kick and not too much of the cymbals as they can become washy in the mix otherwise. 7ft away from eschother and the kick drum is usually a sweet spot, but experiment and always keep and equal distance between the mics!
