I want to talk about my parents

My mum came to this country 50 years ago during the Ugandan Asian Exodus in which the President of Uganda, Idi Amin, ordered the expulsion of the country's Asian minority, giving them 90 days to leave the country (about 80,000)

The expulsion took place against the backdrop of Anti-Indian sentiment in Uganda. Ugandan soldiers engaged in theft and physical and s3xual violence against the Asians without consequences

My mum came to this country, aged 21 with my nannyma, one suitcase and £20 - they stole everything from them including their home, their business and scattered my family across the globe

My (adopted) dad was a white, British male and was with my mum since the mid 70s (they married when I was 9 in the 90s). My dad was from Grimsby and a huge Grimsby Town FC fan and used to take mum to matches every weekend

Both my parents loved going, but as it was the 70s, racism was rife - my dad was called a 'p*ki lover' which my mum used to shout back at "I'm not even from Pakistan!" and they were always somewhere near violence because of my mum's skin colour (she tells me often how her handbag was ruined because of blood from a Millwall supporter!)

As he was older than other dads (and the fact he was a different colour to me) he was always asked if he was my grandad. He was always proud in telling them he was my dad. He stood against racism in a time when men of his generation were 'expected' to say those things

In summary, my dad from what people say is 'the greatest generation' would be disgusted by what people are doing and my mum ain't scared of s**t!
