Posted on behalf of Lois Lloyd (yesterday, 11-09-2024):
Sadly despite the hospital’s best efforts and Jeremy’s fight - he passed away at 4.45pm today - his heart was just too badly damaged.
It was his wish that the Jazz Weekend go ahead and that I go , it will be a celebration and his legacy.
It was his wish that he has a Jazz Funeral so I’ll let you know the arrangements 🥲❤️‍🩹

On the QE 2 he has backed Neil Sedaka, Tom Jones & Petula Clarke, amongst others. For his Quartet he has the pick of the best jazz musicians in the South West.

The MARTIN DALE QUARTET with special guest JADE GALL
Having had a great success playing to and gaining standing applause from an audience of hundreds at the Swanage Jazz Festival in July, the Martin Dale Quartet returns to Plymouth Jazz Club to feature Martin's star pupil, Jade Gall, who has gained fame as a highly celebrated UK-based saxophonist and flautist, hailed as having a big, strong tenor sound with a beautiful sense of melody and swing;- "a musician to look out for in the future” - Steve Waterman.
Experienced in pop, classical and jazz fields, she has performed alongside top-class musicians from around the world, including: Claire Martin, Clare Teal, Jason Rebello and Duncan Lamont; and has featured on BBC Radio broadcasts. Appearing frequently in horn sections across the UK & Europe, Jade has performed to sell-out crowds at The Welsh Millennium Centre, Glastonbury Festival and Boomtown Fair. She featured as regular saxophonist of the smash-hit touring show ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered’ and has also played for ‘The Magic of Motown’, ‘Soul Legends’, ‘DS:UK’ and ‘Seriously Collins’ in shows as far afield as Barcelona and Belgium.

Sunday 15th October at 19:30 THE PEDIGREE JAZZ BAND The Pedigree Jazz Band - "A Tribute to Trad"

The Pedigree Jazz Band was specifically formed to remember the “Trad Boom" of the 50s & early 60s, playing the music of that era by the Barber, Ball & Bilk bands plus 'Humph' and with a bit of Dutch College Swing thrown in.
The popularity of this concept is evidenced by the fact that this band has over forty gigs lined up across the the whole of the country in 2024.

Chris Walker: Leader, Clarinet.
Chris turned professional with the London City Stompers and later joined Mike Daniels, Colin Kingwell’s Jazz Bandits and The Real Ale & Thunder Band. He has led the Chris Walker Swingtet for thirty years and still going strong. He is also a renowned radio broadcaster, and jazz lecturer on P&O, Cunard and Saga cruise ships.

Andy Chislett: Trumpet.
Andy is one of the UK’s best known trumpeters and a leading educator. He leads the Southern All Stars, a band formed in 1996, and guest stars with the country’s top big bands and international celebrities.

Tony Mann, Trombone.
Tony is another brass band trained multi-instrumentalist with several years former experience with local West Country bands. Equally at home playing double bass, Sousaphone or trombone, Tony is a valuable asset to any band.

John Noddings: Banjo & Guitar.
John was a founder member banjo player of Coventry based Dud Clews Jazz Orchestra and played and recorded with the band, on and off, over the years. He has played regularly with George Huxley’s Jazzmen since 1995 in both in the full band and in George’s smaller groups. He was co-organiser of the intriguing Royal Ascot Jazz Band for 25 years until 2 years ago. He also organised the Midlands based band Jazz Salon Rouge from the late 1970’s until he recently moved down to Devon.

Ken Ames or Mike Bennett: Double Bass.
Ken is a renowned double bass player and he has worked, over the years, with Ken Colyer, Bob Wallis and Monty Sunshine (to name but a few!) Originally this band’s banjo player, Ken has rejoined the band on bass to allow Tony to take the trombone chair as Roger Marks replacement.
Mike is living proof of the old saying: “Have bass, will travel”. His first gig was in Malawi. Subsequently, Mike has played in places as far afield as Cairo, Prague, and Vienna. He has been lucky enough to have played with numerous bands and musicians over the years including Chris Barber, Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, George Melly, and even Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees. Masterful and modest, that’s Mike…
Sy Gorelick: Drums
Sy Gorelick (pronounced ) is an Anglo-American, taught by BBC Drummer Paul Brodie (BBC Big Band and top session musician) and has made his name playing in a plethora of styles gaining extensive experience. He has worked in Recording Studios, Theatres, Ballrooms, Cruise liners, Restaurants, Pubs, Cabaret, Teaching, Night Clubs, Petrol Stations, Debenhams’ perfume department (true!), TV & Radio, as well as playing & teaching both in the UK & abroad. He has a lifelong interest in physiognomology, sesquipedalianism, mycology and Occitania about which, to date, he has refused to release for publication.

This will be an unmissable gig, particularly for those who remember the great days of Barber, Bilk, Ball and the other great bands of the trad jazz revival.

The Storyville Jassband, founded in 1959, is one of the oldest traditional jazzbands from The Netherlands still playing all over the world. The band focuses on the Jazz that became popular during The Roaring Twenties in the US. When New Orleans Jazz came over to Europe in the fifties the European bands added their special flavour to the music. The Storyville Jassband continues to play this style of music with great enthusiasm and a touch of humour.

Sunday, 17th September: THE LOUISE PARKER QUARTET
Plymouth-based jazz & soul singer Louise Parker, joined by her quartet, returns to Plymouth Jazz Club after a long absence. She grew up in a house filled with music from the folk, opera and calypso loved by her Jamaican mother, and the extensive collection of Blue Note and Atlantic jazz and blues records played by her father. She came late to singing, after being encouraged by a friend, and after gaining confidence when she studied performing arts in Plymouth.

Louise has played at Pizza Express, Dean Street, Glastonbury Festival Jazz stage in 2005, and after sending in her album (“No More Strangers” featuring Alan Barnes on tenor sax), which was played by Humphrey Lyttleton on his “Best of Jazz” radio show on Radio Two he subsequently invited her to play with him and his band at The Bull’s Head Barnes. She was the last singer to record with him at his studio in London – “Cornucopia 3”
