ISAR3
Spartan Rescue T/A ISAR3 is a leading UK provider of safety cover and specialist training to industry
Quick video of one of our floating PASMA towers used for bridge inspection. We work all over the UK with pontoons of all sizes, safety boats, coded boats, floating towers and even floating MEWPs. We have our own fleet of vans, trailers, 4x4 and hiab lorries to deliver the equipment.
Fully stability assessed using marine architect software. Practical lean testing carried out in house. The tower is tied down to the pontoon base. No edge protection is installed deliberately to aid escape in the event of collision or snagging.
Crew handball the pontoon around the structure. Note the outboard for transport to the structure. Note also the deck hand with buoyancy aid – all our teams are swift water rescue trained so can operate in the water. That’s why they don’t wear lifejackets which are NOT suitable for rescue personnel. He also has a throw line clipped on to assist in a rescue from the pontoon if required.
We have delivered over 9 thousand safe pontoon / tower inspections to date, without a single accident.
Last week we ran a Rescue 3 Europe Rope Rescue Specialist course here in Devon. With delegates from SARA Rescue, Fire and Rescue, an IRATA provider, the wind turbine industry and a specialist TV rigging company it was a good mix of disciplines.
The course requires a high level of rigging expertise from the delegates with force analysis, dual capacity rope systems, lightweight cord rigging, AHDs in A frame, Gin Pole and other exotic deployments. Off sets, cross hauls, inclined high lines, English and Norwegian reeving etc and a high degree of team leadership, command and control.
Students practice advanced rigging and rescue, problem solving, system analysis and anticipating problems. A great group, several of whom will be progressing through the instructor scheme with us later this year.
This video shows and hybrid English / Norwegian Reeve rigged direct off the structure to lower a rescue to a suspended casualty 30m off the ground. While its rigged as a tandem system, in reality the lift was made on one line with the second being tailed as the safety due to the primary lifting being undertaken by the Skylotec ACX. We use this configuration a lot in our industrial access work.
Rescue 3 Rope Rescue Technician Instructor
The Rope Rescue Technician Instructor (RRTI) course covers the teaching of concepts and techniques to enable rescue teams to undertake technical rope rescues. This qualification is the second of three instructor levels within the Rescue 3 scheme and allows the teaching of AHDs, more complex rigging and introduces the teaching of offsets such as skate blocks, tracking lines and non reeving high lines. A building block approach is used throughout the course so that candidates can progress from key concepts through to the rigging and operation of full systems for raising, lowering and highline rescues.
Prerequisites:
• Rope Rescue Operator (RRO)
• Rope Rescue Technician (RRT)
• Rope Rescue Specialist (RRS)

Back to it with entry control and rescue cover on a back shift here in Plymouth
Booking out kit for tomorrow’s Rope Rescue Event at Bristol. Clive Bush (Prusik Rescue) arranges this every year, always well attended, always friendly – it’s a great way for the teams in the region and further afield to network and learn from each other.
The kit is so easy to manage now we have migrated to the scannable system. Simply scan in and allocate to a person, team, or location, then scan back afterwards. Its making a massive difference to our compliance on site and management of inventory. You can see it in action on all of our training courses.
We are pleased to be sending a team to take part in the scenarios this year and we will also be delivering an input session on "considerations for span anchor systems".
See you there teams!
CPD and reflection on current skills and knowledge is essential whatever your profession…..Even Ralph needs to put the hard work in!
Recent Rescue 3 Confined Space Rescue Technician training for a local rescue team. In this short clip they are operating a leaning A frame in deviation mode. The haul system is a twin tension dual capability system, rigged as an English Reeve. This balances the resultant forces on the A frame and helps keep everything stable. The haul is conducted using an internal 3:1 on using CMC Clutches and Captos for maximum efficiency. This system in turn hauls on the 2:1 of the English Reeve giving a compound system at 6:1
The rescue is complete with first rescuer recovered and casualty recovered in stretcher. We pick it up as the final rescuer is hauled from the training shaft. The entry controller to the left has been in contact with the rescue team through our SAVOX hard wired ATEX Zone 0 comms sets which work with the rescuers under air. The comms wire is fed alongside the surface supplied air system used, which in the case is an Interspiro distribution panel supply air to each rescuer who are on Drager PAS C**t systems with bail out pony cylinders on ASVs.
Want to master cool and complex drills using state of the art equipment? Want to train with our very experienced instructors in a friendly and professional setting?
Come talk to us for your training and rescue standby needs. Plymouth based but work all over the UK.
We let the children out of the cage for a bit to open up a new box from R3SAR Gear – they were very excited! Another Arizona Vortex for the team to use.
Here is a comedy unboxing complete with some errors on the pop quiz! This is a standard Arizona Vortex kit, but we add extras to ours such as additional leg sections and Asorb Rigging Rings which is what confused the knuckle draggers.
In addition to the full range of Rescue 3 Rope and Confined Space courses where we play with the Arizona Vortex, we also use it on our rope access and confined space deployments and hire them out for others to use too.
We offer a range of specialist workshops for the use of Arizona Vortex and other artificial high directionals if you want to know how to stretch the legs on this beauty and look cool as …… on your social media posts.

#6160-09
Another Arizona Vortex arrived for adding to our stock. The vortex is such a flexible system and few use it to its full potential. We now have three in service which allows for complexity on jobs and our training courses too.
All our kit is managed and tracked using scannable.
Watch this space for an upcoming series of resources and videos to help you master this system.
Finally got a window to get the floor painted in our undercover training area here in Plymouth.
Apparently 50 shades of grey is a thing, who knew?
We regularly use specialist access to get client staff to and from demanding locations. We are preparing for a joint rope access / confined space survey where we will need to lower and raise client engineer into a 20m deep shaft to inspect prior to designing a a temporary scaffold access.
Here we do this using rope access equipment in combination with powered winching systems – in this case an ACX from Skylotec.
The rigging, operation and rescue plan will all be conducted by our specialist team. The client engineer will be accompanied by one of our rescue and access technicians on their own rope system throughout the entry.
To help the client understand the proposed solution we often prepare short presentations and or videos to bring the concept to lift for them as part of the initial commissioning of the proposed solution.
This video demonstrates such a technique which will be used on site over the next few weeks to make the survey phase of planning and designing future works more effective and efficient for the client.
We excel at these kinds of combined risk jobs that require lateral thinking and creativity to develop safe solutions.
It’s getting warmer – stay hydrated!
Long term dehydration at work can lead to organ and kidney damage in later life and in the short term affects you mood, performance and situational awareness – drink and p*e!
Come on one of our technical courses and we give you a water bottle – its up to you whether you use it for water or p*eing in 😊
Short training video showing a lay flat asymmetric Arizona Vortex A frame used as a stairway landing anchor. Attached is a Harken riggers winch running a 2:1 drop loop line for “hauling” the stretcher up the flight of stairs. Rope protection is a combination of STREP, DMM ProPad and DMM Patroller. The basket stretcher is carrying the casualty pre packaged in an Abtech Slix 100 stretcher. The lines are connected to the stretcher with Lyon steel strops to form a hip level pivot. The steel strops are used to protect the ropes running between the stretcher and the stairs.
There are many variations, you could add a pully at the stretcher head – more important if manually hauling and you could of course add a belay / safety line – we will leave this to you to decide.
Solutions like this are developed and explored on all our Rescue 3 technical rescue and instructor courses for rope and confined spaces.
Enjoy

Confined Space Training
We offer a range of industry and rescue professional training for confined space entry and rescue. Here students on a recent Rescue 3 Confined Space Rescue Technician Course (CSRT) are performing an entry under surface supplied air using our Interspiro supplied air system coupled with the Dragaer PAS C**T harness with ASV and bail out supply. Comms is provided by our hard wire system from SAVOX – a full secure ATEX 0 system. This enables the rescue team leader, entry control and entrants via ear and throat mic to maintain a common operating picture during the rescue.
Access down the entry shaft is via the Rock Exotica Arizona Vortex AHD with a Harken Lock Head Winch fitted for the lower and raise, powered by a drill driver. Independent Fall Arrest back up is also rigged.
Students on our courses are exposed to the very best equipment from a range of trusted brands to create a safe system, bringing together disciplines of confined space and rope rescue. All delivered direct from our purpose built facility here in Plymouth by very experienced instructors.

Rescue 3 Rope Rescue Technician Instructor Training – R3 RRTi. We recently delivered a modular RRTi training and assessment course for a combination of Mountain Rescue Personnel, SARA instructors, Fire and Rescue Instructors and an overseas instructor. This short video was filmed during one of the students doing a demo of passing a double deviation as part of a practical training session they delivered on the course.
We deliver the full range of Rescue 3 industry and professional rescue qualifications for rope, water, confined space and boat operations, both from our training base in Plymouth, UK wide and overseas.
We recently delivered a Rescue 3 Confined Space Entry and Rescue Instructor CSERi Course here at our training base in Devon. This qualifications allows the HART instructors who undertook the training to deliver on going CPD to colleagues at their base(s) enabling them to meet the NARU standards to remain operational. We can even send our double stack shipping container training rig to their operational base for annual training and refreshers.
A great course with fantastic students, full of fun, experience and expertise. HART teams are based around the UK and are trained to work in highly hazardous situations such as major incidents. They are trained and equipped to provide essential pre hospital care at the point of need be it on or in water, at height or in confined spaces.
We deliver the full range of Rescue 3 industrial and Rescue courses across multiple disciplines either here in Plymouth or at venues around the UK.
As well as our operational and project support, we are also working hard delivering specialist technical access and rescue courses, this week our confined space specialist instructor Steve is running a Rescue 3 Europe Confined Space Entry Rescue course for one of our many industry partners, we deliver both Rescue3 courses as well as City and Guilds. Recent Rescue 3 Swift Water and Rescue Technician Advanced course delivered here in Devon from our Rescue Training Centre. Students are exploring methods of moving around in high energy boulder chocked Dartmoor rivers proximal to hazards for access and rescue, making best use of water features to protect themselves.
Interesting day the other day with the Environment Agency and some of their subject matter experts testing harness and strimmer systems attached to personnel who fall into water.
Several variations tried on a tidal section of the River Tamar in Cornwall.
The take aways for you…..
1. Pretty much going float with any type of lifejacket – make sure the strimmer harness is underneath the lifejacket though.
2. Automat rotation of water dummy with strimmer occurred in deep water- turned vertically, but slowly. Airway came clear, but in slumped forward position. !90n auto inflation lifejacket used.
3. The quick release on strimmer harness is possible to find and release in stable conditions when floating down river.
4. Pretty difficult to swim with strimmer attached – go figure!
5. Pretty much impossible for wearer to find and detach from strimmer if strimmer snagged and casualty in flowing water – the casualty trails downstream and the strimmer harness rotates to casualty’s back.
Considerations for your risk assessments – clearly your strimmer model, harness connection, lifejacket may be different from what was tested – don’t assume the same outcome.
You are likely to float OK.
You are not likely to swim attached
You are not likely to self recover up and steep bank or climb out situation
You are likely to be stuck in the river if the strimmer snags on debris.
The practical testing will inform EA systems and of course inform our training that we deliver for all of their staff and much of their supply chain.
Team out recently providing rescue cover for a week long examination of the Prince of Wales crossing on the Severn at Bristol. A wild spot when the weather turns…..
We like these Nano load cells from Harken. Small, compact, easy to install and use. Harken have migrated them from the sailing world into their specialist access offering. We use them on jobs as well as within the training centre. Great bit of kit to help students understand and check their assessment of forces and loads within their rigging.
