FOCUS ON: Peter Lanyon furniture
Peter Lanyon is an award-winning furniture maker renowned for combining coppiced, unseasoned wood with other materials. He champions the use of sustainable, home-grown British hardwoods. We're delighted that Peter has loaned us some of his beautiful creations for the engagement space in the 'Dutch Flowers' exhibition (until 7 Jan).
Peterโs philosophy and approach to woodworking is simple: wood should look and feel like wood. So, when the wood is ready, Peter sets to work on the piece, allowing it to tell its own story and composing it into its finished form. There are no flat sides, straight edges or wood sanded against the grain. Instead, the tool marks add to the raw, tactile finish, bringing out the beauty of the grain and creating a playful contrast of light and shadow.
Coppicing is a traditional woodland management practice that preserves biodiversity. It involves felling young trees to open up the canopy, while preserving the root system. New shoots soon sprout from the stump, and the cycle is repeated every 30 years or so.

"'Flowers in a Terracotta Vase' by Jan Van Huysum was one of the first postcards I bought over 25 years ago. I remember the sense of aspiration, unknowing... Did I need to connect with this painting... to be acknowledged as an artist?"
Make sure you take a look at artist Kedisha Coakley's work and the fresh perspectives it offers when you visit the 'Dutch Flowers' exhibition (until 7 Jan).
