📢 We're taking a short break!📢
Pane e Vino will be closed on Tuesday September 3rd and Wednesday September 4th while some maintenance work is carried out on the property. Be sure to book your tables for Thursday and Friday, though – we expect it to be busy and we wouldn't want you to go hungry! Talking of hungry... here's a sneak peak at our next 25th Anniversary Golden Oldie special dish! Mouth watering already? Full details when it goes on the menu next week!😜
We’d like to think we’re the one and only Pane e Vino! But our pizza chef Luca and his mum, Amy, burst that bubble last month when they came across this one in (of all places!) Lucca – a lovely town in Tuscany. So, we thought we’d set you all a challenge… who's visited the furthest Pane e Vino from Pocklington? Tell us where it is and when you were there (preferably with pictures !). We’ll map them all between now and the end of the year and let you know the winner 🏆 (Psst: we know there’s a terrific Pane e Vino in Hanoi, Vietnam, if anyone fancies a visit! 🇻🇳)
They're under starter's orders for the Ebor Festival in York, so Paolo and Tore have come up with a Racegoers' Risotto to get you all gee'd up for the gee-gees! This spicy blend of arborio rice with our home-made sausage, crispy pancetta, tomatoes. onions, peppers and chilli flakes, served with rocket and parmesan shavings is a real winner. Which is exactly what we're hoping a three-year-old c**t called 'Pocklington' turns out to be in the very first race of the meeting ! If we're popping Prosecco corks in the kitchen when you visit on Wednesday, you'll know he did the town proud!
Thanks for letting us use the picture York Races!
Racegoers' Risotto will be on the menu all week!
A big happy 18th birthday to our brilliant young pizza chef, Luca! He's flying off to celebrate, so Candido will be back in the pizzeria tonight. Luca rarely gets a chance to sit out front as a guest now - he's too busy cooking for you guys! So we thought we'd remind Luca what it was like the last time he came 🤣
This lovely young lady was one of our guests in the early days of Pane... now we're in our 25th anniversary year and she's old enough to work behind the bar! Like the 200 or so young people we've employed over the years, Grace's first memories of Pane e Vino was of celebrating birthdays and other special occasions here as a child. And – also like many of the young people who have gone before her - she'll be leaving us shortly to begin a new chapter of her life at university. It's been a real privilege and pleasure watching you all grow up... and we'd love to see your memories of Pane, if you're happy to share them here! 🥰
Make room for another Golden Oldie to mark Pane e Vino's quarter of a century in Pocklington… and it's a biggie!
Anyone who dined with us in the very early years will remember San Pietro – a rich and delicious pasta, baked in the oven with our own Bolognese sauce, cream, mushrooms and bacon, topped with mouthwatering melted mozzarella. It's enough to tempt St Peter himself!
For Tore and Candido, San Pietro brings to mind a little Sardinian farming community between the mountains and sea, not far from where they grew up, which has one of the most stunning beaches!
If you want a taste trip down memory lane, Pasta San Pietro will be back on the menu from Tuesday July 23rd.
To book your table, call us on 01759 303343!
Our recent Tastes of Sardinia Evening with Terra Sarda Tours featured helpings of the traditional fat little pasta known as malloreddus. It's rare to find it in the shops here - but it's dead easy to make. Check out Terra Sarda Tours' blog for the fascinating story behind 'Sardinian gnocchi' ... and a step-by-step recipe!
History of a nation in a pasta… the malloreddus story The Sardinians have a pretty colourful history – and it’s reflected in their language and their cuisine, both of which mark them out at times as being distinctly un-Italian. If you attend a family gathering in rural Sardinia, you’ll get a true taste of both. The conversation is loud and passio...
A big thank you to everyone - staff and customers - who made our Tastes of Sardinia evening with Terra Sarda Tours such brilliant fun last night. The morning after picture says it all!
A shout-out to chef Paolo who had the presence of mind to take some photos of the magic that was happening in the kitchen (because the rest of us simply forgot 🤦♀️). And to our guest Richard for the group shots!
Cantina Castiadas, you’ll be pleased to know that both your beautiful wines got a big thumbs up from the people of Pocklington. As did the lovely carignano from Aruwinery. Thanks to Cris at Solanas Wines, our wine expert in Sardinia, for overcoming the Brexit bureaucracy and getting them all safely to us.
Let’s do it all again soon! ❤️
They've arrived! Meet the liquid line-up for Monday night's special event, when we'll be transporting you from a cold English summer to the lovely sunlit island of Sardinia!
Hot-foot from the Cantina Castiadas come two wines made from the Cannonau di Sardegna grape – but they couldn't be more different. Award-winning Rai 2020 is a powerful red, while Saeprus is a spumante bianco brut - yes, white bubbles from a ruby fruit! We can't wait to pop the cork on this one!
Sigerro by Aruwinery is another example of the island's wine producers putting a uniquely Sardinian spin on things, this time using 100% Carignano , a grape that's rarely given the chance to shine in a single varietal red wine.
Lastly, we'll cheer you all up with S'Inis from Cantina della Vernaccia, a lovely lively white, boasting lots of sunny Vermentino.
For full details of our four-course taste tour of the island on Monday July 8 in the company of Terra Sarda Tours, go to: https://square.link/u/10GVFJ5X, pop into Pane, or call us on 01759 303343. 🍷🥂☀️

Taste of Sardinia Evening - Terra Sarda Tours Ltd description
Look what Head Chef Paolo turned up to work on today?! A genuine Italian Vespa 🛵 It's a powerful little beauty too, he says, with a top speed of 70mph, although at that rate it's 'molto ventoso' (too windy!) for Paolo's liking. That's OK. We're not fans of fast food chefs!
Ello, ‘ello, ‘ello … what have we here? It’s a very special 25th anniversary Golden Oldie for Fathers’ Day, inspired by Candido and Tore’s brother-in-law! Raffaele originally went to agricultural college and returned to farming full-time a couple of years ago, after retiring from a career in the Carabiniere (one of two police forces in Sardinia). But by then, another Officer Frau was charging up the ranks… Massimo (who many of you will remember from his time at Pane) followed in Dad’s big, shiny-booted footsteps and was recently promoted. It seemed only right that Tagliatelle del Carabiniere, which originally featured on the menu more than 15 years ago, should make a comeback this weekend! With onions, aubergines, spinach, fresh tomatoes, strips of pork, garlic and parmesan, it would be a crime not to treat Dad to it on his big day 👮🏻♂️ To book your Fathers’ Day table this Sunday, call us on 01759 303343!
So a few years ago, one of our lovely customers, charmed by Candido and Gabriele Soi's tales of Sardinia, asked us to help him arrange a holiday for him and his wife in Villasimius. Les straddled a horse from QUELLI CHE AMANO ANDARE A CAVALLO AL MANEGGIO TANKA VILLAGE.. (eagle-eyed customers will recognise the photo from Pane e Vino!) and rode up to inspect this tower, above . It's one of 100 or so built around the coast of Sardinia in the 1500s to keep a constant lookout for marauding pirates. Fierce and unforgiving, they were terrorising villagers, forcing many to flee inland. The most feared of the buccaneers was Red Beard (Barbarossa) and the towers would signal frantically to each other if he or any of his scurvy horde approached. After the last of the pirates had swung from the yardarm, the towers were put to other uses. But by the time Les went to visit, this one was neglected and in poor repair, on a slow decent into the sea. Now the local council has worked with experts to construct an innovative, protective cloak around the tower, preserving the original structure within so visitors can enjoy its spectacular view for another 500 years. You can take a tour of the tower here: https://fb.watch/sw9TT8smws/ Or, better still, like Les, come see it for yourself! The pirates have gone (promise!) ☠️🧑🎤
Many congratulations to our ‘local’ wine producer Cantina Castiadas on being awarded TWO GOLD MEDALS in the Grenaches du Monde International Competition in Paris! Winning in this competition between the best cannonau producers in the world (even if they do call it ‘Grenache’!) is massive. The cantina is a co-operatively run winemaker used by many farmers near us, back home in Sardinia. We’ll see if we can’t get a few bottles sent over for you to try at Pane! 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷
It’s hot, hot, hot in Pocklington today! Summer’s finally arrived! So why not celebrate with a Pane takeout? From this weekend, you can add any of your favourite wines, beers and bottled or canned soft drinks from our menu to your order, too. Call for details on 01759 303343. (Collection only) ☀️☀️☀️☀️
It’s Throwback Thursday! Time to reveal our next Golden Oldie special to celebrate Pane’s 25th anniversary year 🥳 Mare e Monti (sea and mountains) was our own surf and turf. Succulent chicken breast, prawns and fresh mushrooms, cooked in a velvety cream and Napoli sauce with tagliatelle, it last featured on the menu… well, we can’t remember exactly, but you haven’t forgotten it! “I think half of Pocklington moved out when we took it off the menu,” laughs Tore. “But every dish has its day and at the time we wanted to develop new flavours. We carried on making it for customers on request, of course!” Sardinia, where Tore and Candido grew up, is best known for its stunning seascape but we think the mountains are equally impressive.
Great to be reunited with our Terra Sarda Tours guests in Pane e Vino - Pocklington last night! Pleased to say they hadn’t lost their taste for Sardinian wines! Here’s a throwback to the memorable tasting in April in with the lovely Cris Donateo who runs Solanas Vini with his father Etzio 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Back home in Sardinia, Candido is definitely the commis chef to Mamma Antonietta, our head sfoglina (pasta maker) for Terra Sarda Tours! You’d never think he’d spent 40 years making it and cooking it in the UK … the last 25 for Pane e Vino - Pocklington!🤣🤣🤣
Thanks to Colline del Vento for giving our Pane e Vino - Pocklington guests such a wonderful evening among the vines ... not sure we have room for all the wine they want to bring home!
These Sardinian loaves were made in a traditional, wood-fired oven that has been lying idle for at least 20 years in Tore and Candido's home town in Sardinia. A wonderful community group called the Associazione Culturale La Tartaruga ODV Villasimius lit the flame this week and ignited a flood of warm memories. Historically, ovens of this size, would have been used by several neighbours to bake the weekly bread. It was a social occasion as much as a necessity. The bread shovel that you can see belongs to Candido and Tore's mum, who still uses it in her own bread oven and can remember community baking days. Her sister helped make and bake the loaves - we had one for tea this evening in Villasimius! At the end of this month, the oven will be at the centre of a celebration of not just breadmaking but an important piece of Sardinian domestic history as well as the great art of the panificio (the breadmaker). If you hadn't guessed, the word 'pane' in our name refers to the bread we bake daily in our own ovens in Pocklington. We salute the breadmakers of Villasimius 🍞🥖🫓
You asked for it… and from this weekend it’s back - for a limited time only!
Spaghetti Marscapone was one of the most requested pastas when we asked for your best-loved dishes from the past 25 years.

Happy Easter to all our customers! ( Buona Pasqua a tutti!) 🐣
Easter marks the first or our ‘throwback specials’ - golden oldie recipes from Pane e Vino’s 25 years in Pock!
This blast from the past is the dish most often requested by loyal customers who remember the vodka-fuelled Noughties. “Everyone was drinking it back then, so we thought ‘why not add it to pasta!” says Tore. “Rigatoni Vodka became one of our most popular dishes.” And no wonder… succulent king prawns and crispy pancetta in a cream and vodka sauce… totally unique 😍
If you have fond memories of a golden oldie that you’d like to see on the menu this year, let us know!
Rigatoni Vodka will share the specials slot this weekend with a new addition that went down a storm on Mother’s Day - Candido’s delish Limoncello & Lemon Curd Cheesecake 😍
Easter opening: 5pm til late Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Sunday. Book now! 01759 303343

From Sanremo to Sydney, Milan to Manchester and Pisa to Paris, the world celebrates Italy's best-loved dessert today – ! In a genius piece of marketing, food authors Clara Vada Padovani and Gigi Padovani established International Tiramisù Day in 2017 to promote their book Tiramisù: Storia, Curiosità, Intepretazioni Del Dolce Italiano Più Amato – the definitive history of tiramisù, which means a 'pick me up' in English. Chefs everywhere have their own spin on the cocoa and coffee classic, but why go further than Pocklington for it? We think Candido's egg-free version is still one of the best! Hop over to our Insta page https://www.instagram.com/panevinopocklington/ to see how it's done!
Our American friends will be celebrating National Ravioli Day in the States next Wednesday… back home in Sardinia, ravioli day comes round most weeks!😋 Here's how Antonietta makes it (from scratch, of course!). This is a delicious, meat-free savoury dish with a surprising combination of flavours that go beautifully with a fresh Napoli sauce. If you'd like the full recipe, let us know (or hop over to Sardinia with Terra Sarda Tours and learn from the expert herself!)
Happy to all our guests today! This beautiful mother-and-daughter moment was captured on a visit to Autunno in Barbagia in the lovely hilltop village of , in the middle of , last year. The photographer was on a tour with our sister company Terra Sarda Tours. You can find more of his work on Insta .antony.
