Laser surgery for varicose veins takes an hour or two so patients usually relax during the procedure by listening to music, watching videos or reading. This lady swore her choice of reading material was entirely coincidental! She seemed very relaxed nevertheless.

Yesterday I completed a mighty hike 27mile marathon around the Gower Peninsula Wales raising money for Macmillan.

Google review number 200 from a lovely lady who had a huge lipoma removed. She managed not to be nervous and I am glad we helped her with that. We use a small vibrating device which produces a "buzzing" distraction on the skin as I numb up any lesion for removal. Together with music and a friendly efficient atmosphere helps patients feel calm and cared for.

Skin tags are easily treated in the clinic by different techniques.
More important though is that these tags may be a marker of high insulin levels.
If your patient is obese with multiple tags please consider metabolic syndrome and suggest they consult their GP or a service such as www.barlowcollins.co.uk. your advice may improve and extend their life.

Seborrhoeic keratosis.
These harmless but unsightly blemishes are common and have multiple appellations (seborrheic keratosis, seborrhoeic wart, senile wart, age wart, wisdom wart, brown wart, barnacle, basal cell papilloma or just SK!).
Easily treated under local anaesthetic either by excision (as here) or by electro therapy (which can cause a pale patch of skin).

Rhinophyma is a variant of rosacea, an inflammatory skin condition.

This was a very large cyst of the cheek which I removed under local anaesthetic a month ago. My patient is very pleased, having travelled from Devon for his surgery, he kindly sent me the photo showing how well his healing is going already.
The wound was closed with very fine self-dissolving sutures, so no need for a visit to remove stitches.

Check your skin.

Summer holidays are over and you may be wondering about a mole which you had not noticed before.
My colleague, Richard Ashton has a very helpful guide on his website (www.dermatologist-surgeon.co.uk) which will help you decide whether your mole might need checking. Most skin cancers are completely eliminated if caught early for treatment so please do it today if you are at all worried.
Your GP can help reassure you whether a photo needs to be sent to the NHS dermatology department. Your practice may have an “e-consult” facility, enabling you to get it checked without having to visit the surgery.
The lesions illustrated are malignant melanomas - if you have similar, please consult the guide.

If you have a benign cosmetic mole, cyst, lump etc that you would like neatly removed, I would be delighted to help. All moles are routinely checked in the pathology lab even if they appear benign.

Some of my latest batch of sutures (surgical stitches with tiny ready mounted needle).
These new sutures are antibacterial. This reduces the (thankfully fairly uncommon) chances of a wound infection after surgery.
The stitch material is coated with triclosan which is active against a broad range of bacteria. The evidence from many studies show the advantage of these sutures which are now recommended by NICE (National Institute for health Care Excellence).
