Hello there – We are Salad, and although we’re officially a design and marketing agency, we actually like to think of ourselves as visual magicians and agony aunts for businesses with relationship issues. Whether those issues be branding, print, packaging, websites or anything else you can think of, we approach every project with enthusiasm,
determination and ruthlessly high expectations.

Body and mind, intricately linked and in constant communication.

Powered by Health Hero, Symbio has its sights on becoming “the global market’s most engaging and holistic employee wellbeing platform, helping progressive organisations to understand, manage and enhance the mental and physical wellness of their people – within, and beyond, the workplace.”

We were asked to help build the brand, create the name and visual identity, shape the personality and tone of voice for the app’s chatbot and provide guidance to the in-house marketing and development teams managing the roll-out.

Today we’re celebrating EO Day, when Employee Owned businesses come together to raise awareness of the benefits and impact of employee ownership.

The effect of our journey through Employee Ownership has been profound. It’s challenged us to take a closer look at ourselves, our proposition and our identity. It’s encouraged us to open up the dialogue and talk more about our aspirations and our future as a team.

And, we’ve felt a warm welcome from the EO community, with whom we have an almost constant discussion about the pros and cons of Employee Ownership. It’s a gloriously cooperative, purposeful and people-positive club, and we’re very proud to be a part of it.

SNEAK PEEK! HealthHero recently approached us to help create a name and a brand for their new, holistic well-being app, Symbio.

Symbio’s mission is to re-imagine wellbeing, and help progressive organisations understand, manage and enhance the mental and physical wellness of their people – within, and beyond, the workplace.

We helped position the app within the wider Health Hero ecosystem, created the name, visual and verbal identity, a customisable system of illustrations which can be used across the app and marketing materials, and provided support for both development and marketing teams.

A refreshed identity to represent cultural and commercial change 06/06/2023

A refreshed identity to represent cultural and commercial change.

After some twenty years we were ready for change. Seeing our process from the inside out gave us a better understanding of the challenge of adopting a new identity: daunting and exciting in equal measure! This week’s blog gives some insight into why we wanted to do it, and how we approached it.

We’re grateful to all the team who worked hard to deliver the project on brief and on time. And following his internship in 2016 and a number of collaborative projects since, we’re delighted to have worked with Perry Rowe, who helped bring our brand to life through his thoughtful, playful illustrations.

A refreshed identity to represent cultural and commercial change Changing our identity after some twenty years was a daunting exercise, but something we were ready for.

Brand building is a whole company initiative.

When we first engaged with Passenger, they told us that they wanted everyone to get involved with the process. So we invited everyone. The whole team. Over two days of workshops, we rallied around real purpose and, as a result of the inclusive approach, we got buy in from the widest possible stakeholder group.

As a result the brand was built with insights brought by individuals who may not have otherwise had the opportunity to speak up and be heard. The visual and verbal identity is representative of their shared journey together. And the website communicates it all with clarity and consistency.

As they say... teamwork makes the dream work. Read more on the case study: https://saladcreative.com/work/passenger

The demise of a long-standing fabric mill had left the original Tessuti fabric collection in limbo. However, whilst seeking a unique fabric solution for an interior design project, Neil Sherring made a chance discovery and stumbled across the website of Patrick Gallagher. Deeply inspired by what he saw, a conversation ensued and the development of PG Tessuti was reborn.

We were delighted to work with these two formidable interior designers to revitalise the PG Tessuti identity, crafted to match the position and aspiration of the brand in its new form.

To bring all the visual elements together, we subsequently developed the website. Designed to tell the story behind the brand, each and every detail has been carefully curated to showcase the luxury fabric collection.

We are thrilled to announce that we’ve redesigned our visual and verbal identities and launched a new website 🚀

Our new identity is a manifestation of our shared personality. Our new website is designed to illustrate our proposition, outlook and work for the benefit of our clients, partners and friends.

A decision to invest in ourselves and reflect the cultural changes within our organisation:

100% employee owned - developing our proposition that connects us to a more purposeful, people-positive mission.

Internal alignment - taking the time to understand what’s important to us, and including the whole team as contributors to the process.

A better representation of us - an identity that suits our employee ownership & the individuals who make up the team.

What is Beautifully Effective?

Our mantra, our essence, our approach and what we hope to deliver

Beautifully Effective is a carefully considered response to the problem we’ve been hired to solve, the criteria under which our solution will be judged, and the craftsmanship and aesthetic we apply.

So, what does this actually mean? Let us break it down for you…

Aesthetics: Capture the eye. Ensure attention. Convey the message, powerfully.

Mechanics: Built to function better than expected. Built to last. Built to create a lasting impact.

Impact: Increase knowledge. Increase connection. Create impact, both commercially and culturally.

Beautifully Effective: Two little words to live by, everyday.

Encouraging us to be inspired by the passions held by our clients.

Giving us the opportunity to respond equally as passionately to the problem we can solve, together.

And a promise to treat their business as if it were our own.

We’re thrilled that our work to create Ann Hiatt's unique and authentic brand, with all her warmth and smarts, has now launched 🚀

Beyond the brand and visual identity, the project included a redesigned website, telling the amazing story of her career to date: working alongside Jeff Bezos in the early days of Amazon; establishing the ubiquitous Chief of Staff role at Google which was subsequently adopted as a mainstay of tech companies around the world; and now, as a catalyst to international visionaries and champion of unidentified entrepreneurs.

We thrive on the connections we build with our clients, and working with individuals on their personal brands offers us a special opportunity to connect at a deep human level. Birmingham was absolutely buzzing this weekend! We had the best time visiting the Commonwealth Games, watching some incredible sport and just soaking up the atmosphere (and sunshine! ☀️!)
We’re incredibly proud to have supported in the run up to and during the games and we were even prouder watching the incredible athletes competing to the highest levels in sport 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🙌

CASE STUDY 1: As the first full day of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games kicks off, we are delighted to share the case study for the Team England Hub.
Event handbooks have a problem: they’re ‘one size fits all’, the minute they’re printed they’re out of date, and they’re unsustainable to produce.
The Hub has reimagined the handbook format into a fully up-to-date, tailored experience that users can access in a way to suit them, either as a mobile first experience on their browser, or as an app via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Passenger | Brand Strategy & Website | Salad Creative 01/07/2022

LATEST CASE STUDY: With a mission to make shared transport the first choice, Passenger approached us to help develop their brand and evolve the identity to better and more confidently represent a new, shared reality for the business.

We helped create a clear space in their market around customer experience in shared transport. We established a more robust identity, improving legibility of the logo and the word mark, developed a new colour palette, and developed a series of graphic applications of the murmuration patterns.

The redevelopment of the website represented the first real-world application of the new brand. Re-engineered from the ground up and adopting the new visual styling. Using the strategy work as a basis, we were able to determine structure and navigation centred around more considered value propositions, and a focus on values and purpose allowed the culture to shine through to support the rapid expansion of the team.

10 Ways being an EOT has changed life | Salad Creative 13/06/2022

A year in: 10 ways being an EOT has changed life at Salad

Our MD, Bella shares her thoughts on how becoming employee owned has impacted ways of working, our culture and how we’re working together as a team, more than ever, to shape our future.

10 Ways being an EOT has changed life | Salad Creative A year ago Salad transitioned to employee ownership (EOT) We look back at what it's like being part of this exclusive set of like-minded businesses.

16/05/2022

Team bonding at its best: a brilliant Copenhagen jaunt to celebrate a year of being employee owned and, well, just because we deserve it after the last few years 😛

On top of some incredible dining experiences - most notably Punk Royale and Høst - we packed in bike rides, butterfly houses, harbour swims, smørrebrød sandwiches, pastries, kayaking, sight-seeing, shopping and even a live football match!

We couldn’t have been more blessed with the weather and we’ve come back rewired, inspired, and full of gratitude for the brilliant few days spent together in one of the design capitals of the world 🇩🇰

The last time we took a trip to Madrid we ended up in the papers and Bella was even called the Best Boss in the World! So naturally we’re angling for best EOT in the world this time 😉

And as is the way with trips, we’re already dreaming of where we could go next 😎

23/03/2022

Why do we do what we do? Certainly we’re driven by the value and the results our work delivers. But the journey we go on as part of that delivery is often just as important.

In setting out to redefine and develop the Passenger brand we had high hopes of a great working relationship but the cultural connection that ensued far exceeded this expectation. Quite simply, the team at Passenger are some of the most cerebral, passionate and purpose-led we’ve worked with.

This short film beautifully sums up the experience of developing Passenger’s brand and evolved visual identity, and how we developed the concept of murmurations as a metaphor for the movement of people, data and the shared purpose that binds the team at Passenger together.

Jigsaw Interior Design | Brand and Website | Salad Creative 14/02/2022

LATEST CASE STUDY: Jigsaw Interior Architecture & Design are a leading design practice who create intuitive, aspirational interiors.

From our very first meeting, we immediately knew we’d found a meaningful connection and shared way of thinking based on a love of aesthetics, colour, light, space and layout.

Working collaboratively, we created a brief to reconstruct the Jigsaw brand and develop a new visual identity and website that would communicate their offer in an authentic, accurate and compelling way.

The result is a clearly articulated proposition, defined messaging, a refreshed visual identity and sub brand for Box by Jigsaw, as well as a new website that puts Jigsaw in full control of their content.

Founder and Creative Director, Melissa, kindly shared her experience of working with us, “We chose Salad as they seemed to really understand our processes and were like minded creatives. We trusted them and took their lead when they pushed us out of our comfort zone. We went right back to basics, what do we do & why do we do it? It was a very cathartic exercise and it helped me understand my team and my clients better.”

We are now 100% employee owned - Salad 14/06/2021

Teamwork makes the dream work - we are delighted to announce that Salad is now employee owned!

This has been facilitated through 100% of the shareholding being transferred to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) that exists for the benefit of our employees.

The special sauce in Salad is undoubtedly our people, and this move represents the perfect combination of our sustainability as a business and the empowerment of our team.

Despite the change in ownership our leadership remains the same, Bella and Andy are still very much in place as MD and FD respectively and the next year will be focused on adapting to the new structure and continuing to grow into the new ownership model.

Having this happen in conjunction with our 20th anniversary this summer feels extra special. Our mantra, ‘Beautifully Effective’ gives us direction and focus in the work we produce and the way the EOT structure fits our business and our culture, by aligning the team as owners, certainly feels beautifully effective to us.

Head to the website to read more about it on our blog:

It’s a great feeling when one of your very first clients comes back years (decades?!) later and asks you to develop a brand for their specialist art and interior design house.

Led by Neil Sherring, and with a black book to die for, Floren specialises in sumptuously elegant interiors and contemporary artworks.

It was a pleasure to work with such a meticulous and detail orientated creative, drawing out the unique characteristics that define the approach, and ultimately the brand: developing the brand platform, tone of voice and messaging as part of the brand identity, followed by rolling it out across a gorgeous suite of branded touchpoints.

Super proud of this one. Royal warranted House of Garrard have been a wondeful client for a number of years but while we’ve designed many elements of it, we’ve never looked after the technical side of the website. One evening a few weeks back we got an email asking if there was the slightest chance we could take their website e-commerce in just 7 working days. Never one to turn down a challenge, and with a true ‘where there’s a will there’s a way’ attitude we rolled up our sleeves and set to the project. It was certainly no small task, but needless to say we did it! Client and team pulled together beautifully and just 7 working days later the e-commerce site was launched. All in time for Christmas. Lovely. Go team! ❤️
