What an absolute honour and so reassuring for me as a tutor and learner, hearing that we have the SAME philosophy when it comes to learning languages

The interview was in Spanish (one of the 4 languages we share hehe)

I don't have kids yet, but I'm fairly sure learning a new language is kinda like having a baby 🍼

At some points it feels like the kid will never grow up, and it's TOUGH 😠

Sleepless nights, the 'terrible twos'...

But when you look back you wish you'd have been more present and really enjoyed whatever stage the baby or in this case, your language skills were at ☺️

Don't try to rush through stages of learning, each contains its own gems of wisdom and LOL moments 🤣

I LOVE starting a new language from scratch because every word is a surprise!

I also love being able to understand and speak to people with ease 😍

It's OK to not understand everything

When listening, sometimes our brain tries to guess meanings of whole sentences

This creates a commentary in our native language - not useful

Just be present and know your brain will understand what it understands

Be OK with not knowing

There's no perfect time to start learning a foreign language

If you've got that feeling that you'd LOVE to speak a certain language fluently

You've just gotta go for it

You won't regret having taken the leap in 3 yeas time

Trust me!

Ultimately, all behaviours are driven by love

We are either seeking it or giving it

Both are fine, but if you are learning a language to express your love of connecting with others

Don't need to get upset about forgetting a word

Remind yourself

It's about connection

During class

You don't HAVE to tell the truth about your day or how you are etc

I constantly make sh*t up jus to practice new words and phrases

If you've just learnt the word for 'bear' how often is that gonna come up in a normal convo?!

Sometimes you gotta force words in

It's mad how quickly we forget that our TL sounds completely alien to others

Monolinguals just stare in awe as if we are performing some kind of wizardry

I guess in a way, we are!

Let’s be real

The best version of yourself speaks your TL fluently

So let’s make it happen!

I don't mind not being the most talented language learner in the world

But I still strive to speak my TLs as well as possible

Not for the sake of being 'good' at them, but to be able to communicate and connect with other human beings

If they are to be successful,

Aside from patience, what else does a beginner language learner need in abundance?

They're like gold dust

If you have one, hold on tight to them!

Ultimately, it doesn't matter what level you get to in your TL

The most important thing is you have happy with your level

I like to get to at least B2 because I like being able to understand more or less everything and speak fairly well about every day things

WBU?

The faster you get comfortable making mistakes

The faster you will learn your TL

It is that simple

What is your definition of fluency?

Even if you stop lessons for a period of time

Don't throw in the towel completely

Continue listening and just learn passively for a while

You will regret it big time if you give it all up

Translation is a NOT the same as acquiring a new language

It's a completely different skill

Novice learners get stuck because they think they should try to translate everything from their native language into their TL

NOT the way to do it

The great thing about learning a language PROPERLY

By that I mean storing it in your long term memory

(Rather than learning random phrases that you forget as soon as you say them)

Is that you gift yourself a skill for LIFE
