We’re celebrating this month’s with this 10.5-carat demantoid garnet 🌟

Here we can see a bright white area at the centre of the stone, which is indicative of the incredible lustre of demantoids.

Lustre can be defined by the quality and quantity of light returned from the surface of a material and is affected by the condition of the stone and the quality of the surface.

This bright reflection of demantoid is considered to be sub-adamantine lustre - close to the lustre of diamond. Here at Gem-A, we reserve the word ‘adamantine’ exclusively for diamonds.

Demantoid garnet in particular, has higher dispersion than diamond and much higher dispersion than other garnets. This means you perceive more flashes of colour when the stone is moved in the light. Interestingly, you often won’t see this to its full potential as the green body colour of demantoid ‘masks’ a lot of the colour flash, whereas colourless diamond doesn’t.

We offer a professional pearl restring service to a high standard,.
Included in the price is a cleaning service including the drill hole, please note this does not apply to plastic bead or imitation pearls, before rethreading on to new silk.

We will restring your pearls either with a small knot between each pearl or knotted or as a plain row as a plain strand
in addition we are also able to supply silver or gold clasps for single strands or up to 5 rows. We can also supply magnetic clasps but remember you cannot have a magnetic clasp if you have a pace maker

All pearl restringing is covered by a year’s guarantee and each job will be issued with a certificate of guarantee complete with cleaning and care instructions.

In addition, we are also able to offer a restringing service on gemstone beads on a variety of materials including silk, nylon and steel wire for those larger, heavier items.

All work is generally completed in 2 -3 days
if you need an urgent repair we can restring it with a few hours, we have an emergency service available
If brought into the shop by midday it can be ready in the afternoon of the same day

To Knot or not to knot that is the Reason...
Nacre on cultured pearls can be delicate especially cultured pearls, knotting prevents them rubbing together damaging the surface. If the silk should break, only a single bead or pearl will fall. Without knots the beads or pearls will run all over the floor and some may be lost or broken
