Outsider Artists present: Scott Lavene - bringing his odd pop and twisted ballads to us here at The Ferret this November! ✨

- Scott Lavene | The Ferret, Preston - 17.11.24

Have we ever needed great storytellers so badly? Voices to snap us out of our collective grey funk, to pull us out of our narrow, hemmed-in worlds and to lighten our days and enlighten us with their perspectives, Immersing us in their worldview and history. People who can make us laugh, cry, gasp or nod sagely, to see our world anew and not feel so alone. We need stories, vignettes, new windows to look out of, and narrators to help those new visions make sense.

In short, we need Scott Lavene. Born and raised in Essex, but a man of the world who has wandered far and wide, Lavene’s a storyteller who can capture all the madness, joy and frustration of life while singing about worms writhing in the ground. Lavene’s been in bands since his teens, but only really located the voice that makes his new album Milk City Sweethearts so remarkable – that combination of wry observation, humble wisdom, unguarded vulnerability and unpredictable humour – in a music workshop for alcoholics and addicts, long after he’d bid farewell to childhood dreams of pop stardom, and the ghosts and demons that accompany those dreams.

With his stories, Lavene makes us all feel a little less alone – he’s that voice in our ear who always has a tale more weird, more tragic, more funny than our own, but in whose experiences we can see our own. Laughter, tears, madness and redemption reside within this magical songs, the full spectrum of existence. You’d be a fool to miss out.

"A master storyteller." Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music.
"A delicate balladeer with Robyn Hitchcock's surrealist flair" - MOJO
"Any 'best albums of 2019' lists that don't have Scott Lavene's 'Broke' near the top are bu****it" - Dangerous Minds
"Sounds like an updated version of something that Stiff records would have released in the 70's." - Steve Lamacq
"Think Baxter Dury's warped kid brother." - The Times

‼️Fresh gig alert!‼️Scruff of the Neck presents: The Silver Bars

- The Silver Bars | Preston, The Ferret

Barrow born indie rock band The Silver Bars started making waves on the local circuit with their electric live sets and unorthodox covers. The release of their original music has seen them go from strength to strength since, amassing hundreds of thousands of streams.

The bands most recent release ‘Modern Features’ saw them tour nationwide, playing to sell out crowds as well as joining the Kendal Calling & YNOT lineups along the way. With new music imminently in the pipeline, as far as the North West is concerned, they are certainly ones to watch.

‼️ICYMI‼️ Teesside noise punks Benefits make their way to on the 13th October 🤘

-
BENEFITS | The Ferret, Preston - 13.10.24
-

Forming in 2019 and consisting of Kingsley Hall on vocals and Robbie Major on synths and noise, Benefits quickly evolved into a highly politicised group that aims to merge noise, hardcore, hip hop, industrial rock, electronica, and an angry twitter feed to get its point across.

A resolutely DIY outfit they have managed to gain fans as diverse as Sleaford Mods, Steve Albini, Black Francis, Garbage, Billy Bragg and Elijah Wood as well as getting significant features in the NME, Rolling Stone, the Guardian, and the Quietus.

In 2023 they released their abrasive debut album “NAILS” on Invada Records which garnered significant critical acclaim as well as numerous album of the year nods, most significantly from Louder Than War magazine and BBC6music.

An inspiring, loud and formidable live outfit, they aim to keep the momentum going from their debut as they prepare to release the follow up.

-

⭐️“Teesside noise punks offer up horror and futility on this stark and essential debut” NME ★★★★

⭐️“A stunningly intense listen… it’s a record that introduces a stunning voice, a righteous message, and further reinforces Invada Records’ place as a pivotal stable for outsider voices” CLASH (8/10)

⭐️“One of the most profound records of this year, maybe even this decade. Authentic, furious, and absolutely vital… Benefits is the band Britain needs right now” FAR OUT MAGAZINE (Album of The Week)
