⚡️Knowledge =Power⚡️

⚡️Education can provide you with confidence
⚡️Shift the power….
⚡️Sometimes it’s not even money it’s TIME that you need to invest in YOUR pregnancy.
⚡️People are so busy these days they leave antenatal / pregnancy birth prep till the last minute! Or miss it out….”I’ll go with the flow” “birth plans don’t go to plan anyway”
⚡️As an NHS midwife I always encourage you to start exploring during early pregnancy all the way through, earlier the better, self educate and increase your confidence, understand your birth rights & choices, one course…might not be enough….top that up with yoga, Pilates, books, podcasts, IG accounts so many amazing ones on here….here’s a few of my favorite accounts

🤍SEPTEMBER & Mm🤍

🤍Maternal matters will close at the end of September….
🤍Unfortunately the roof wasn’t originally renovated to last….
🤍So closing the doors for repairs and renovations means a new chapter….
🤍My bestie said to me today September is all about new beginnings 💫
🤍Meanwhile this gives me time to really focus on my nhs role, I underestimated how long the transition would take me but I’m getting there now….
🤍In October I embark on my frenulotomy course working along side the infant feeding team so I’ll be busier than ever…
🤍So from now on expect slightly different content, still midwifery based, not as frequent but as authentic as ever.
🤍Huge hugs to everyone that’s supported me, chosen me & Mm over the last 4 years. Too many to tag, too many images to include everyone you know who you are (((()))))
🤍Meanwhile will continue to support local mothers as will I, always reach out if you are struggling with bf.
🤍Other regular female led business that hired mm I will continue to promote and support on my grid.
💫Much LOVE Abigail

🤍Maternal matters studio🤍

🤍It’s been almost 4 years since I opened MM so much has happened, feeling reflective!
🤍I was told at the time pictured in my NHS uniform “you cannot do that” “you’re not allowed “ I think it was pretty innovative and ofc I did it anyway….😂
🤍My intentions where to enjoy midwifery outside of the Nhs, to offer support in a luxury safe space to my local community on my terms, teach how I wanted to teach and make connections with other businesses that really care about truly supporting women like I do….
🤍I feel like I’ve definitely achieved that, although I have nothing to prove….🙌🏽
🤍Then I left the nhs and felt very bitter about it, healed , then I returned after nearly 2 years out….wow! 😳
🤍Mm is unique and people where drawn to it
🤍Ultimately the best thing that has come out of it is my connections with local female led businesses and the families have had the joy of supporting, also the instagram birthy community I feel totally blessed to have made so many meaningful relationships & gained so much knowledge 🙏🏻
🤍I have new plans for MM space that I will share very soon….
🤍But most of all I want you all to know it’s the people that have enriched my progression as a midwife not the material studio….💫
🤍Feeling grateful to all the people that have genuinely supported me and MM 🙏🏻💫🤍
🤍Watch this space it might not be what you expect!

💙Tandem feeding💙

💙Just had to repost this, what an absolute badass mama, after c-section too & I love her blog post ⬇️
💙Tandem feeding isn’t often talked about…did you T feed?
💙

But you can’t see owt. And my friend just called me an ‘actual superhero’ after sent it, so I decided to take that compliment. :-)

Baby out safe. 🎉

And home safe. 🎈

These guys have been taking it in turns to wake each other up. And combined with the pain and the tired… well let’s just say we are hoping they snooze now. For a little bit.

They only met tonight and thought there would be a sort of jealousy but they just held hands and went to sleep here. And we took a photo cos it was so lovely.

It made the hard bits melt away. (Until they all woke again, ten mins after!)

I did keep trying to post an update from hospital but it was impossible. I wanted to shout out my amazing team. Particularly Liz Mills, my lovely birth midwife. A total superstar. The anesthetist Sarah and surgeon Ms Twain. And lots of others. you stars

Highlights included NHS toast but then I had a bit too much and my gut slowed and I started to regurgitate it. Hehe. So I had to have a toast pause.

I lost a good amount of blood thanks to my sexy ‘boggy uterus’ being a cow bag. Earned myself a few extra meds to try get on top of it all, then deal with the consequences.

And, alas. A really significant absolute sh***er of a tongue tie that is going to be a journey and a half. And now… well it is a story of a lot of painful farts.

All our belongings are still in storage so we been haemorrhaging cash on baby stuff we already own.

But, grateful to be here. (But still a little fearful about the other parts, cos being grateful doesn’t cancel out fear). Looking forward to pain settling as think it will all be easier to handle.

Both babies finally asleep so gonna join them. Hope we at least get couple of hours.

Night all. And thanks for the good wishes. Xx

Ps this is called tandem feeding

💛Maria’s last BF
💛Just for fun we recreated this image, on holiday last summer, same place 6 years apart!
💛Maria aged
20 months & 8 years!
💛She was self weaning, around 20 months but asked to nurse for the final times in the hot weather, I remember nursing her enjoying those precious last feeds (bo***es almost empty) 🤣
💛I captured the image because I knew my BF journey was coming to an end …forever.
💛I was ready to stop too, after a total of 5 years & 3 children but I knew I would miss it one day, I do, although always grateful 🙏🏻
💛Being prepared to breastfeed is always a good idea, reading books, short courses, social media
accounts, increased confidence, this can all be free!
💛We all can do better to support bf & raising awareness since we still have the poorest rates in the developed world, I also blame the government!
💛Did you know I can visit you at home if you need guidance, support or have found yourself in a challenging bf situation, support is key! DM ME

🌟Student midwives🌟

🌟As the third years qualify and new first years begin in September I’m sharing Katie’s experience as a newly qualified midwife that has almost completed her first year, questionably the most vulnerable year of all where statistically they are mostly likely to leave!
🌟Katie worked with me on her very first community placement 4 years ago! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

I recently graduated from a midwifery degree and I am currently working as a band 5 rotational midwife on a busy maternity unit. My experience of training and being a newly qualified midwife in the current circumstances has been a varied one. I have felt very well supported by the majority of midwives I have worked alongside on the shop floor and have enjoyed developing my practice particularly as a newly qualified midwife.
Midwifery training was incredibly difficult, it is an incredibly demanding course in many ways including financially, emotionally and physically. Working so hard on placement for free whilst often balancing additional paid work on top can be really draining and you really have to love midwifery to manage it.
I have, overall, enjoyed being a newly qualified midwife, I can truly say I love my job and supporting families through this experience is such a privilege. However, it is incredibly difficult to provide the care you want to be able to give with the significant staffing and financial issues maternity services are facing. Ultimately, services and midwives are stretched to the limit, we are running often with half or less of the midwives we should have in the unit and even finding working equipment can be a challenge. Sadly I see the struggle on the faces of both service users, experiencing delays and receiving care from a broken service, and demoralised, exhausted midwives every single day. The sheer demand and pressure you experience does ultimately compromise the care you are able to provide and wondering whether you’ve have missed something is constantly on the back of your mind. I really love my job, but I feel like I risk it every time I go to work.
🌟NQMs what has your first year experience been like?
🌟3rd yrs what area have you chosen to work? ⬇️

💛colostrum💛

💛AKA liquid gold ➡️swipe to see the color
📸 incredible image by

💛Colostrum is the first form of breastmilk. Typically, it is yellowish because it contains beta-carotene and is often thicker.
💛It’s high in antibodies and antioxidants to build a newborn baby’s immune system. It changes to breast milk within two to four days after your baby is born. Words by
💛There are many myths around the “first milk”
💛The one that baffles me the most is that it’s not enough….and the baby needs formula supplements for the first 3 days until “the milk comes in”
💛This can cause so many issues during the early days of breastfeeding, including disrupting the microbiome colonization (good gut bacteria), ni**le teat confusion, rapid growth of new born stomach, mothers milk supply and more!
💛Over all this myth and approach makes breastfeeding really challenging, and sometimes it cannot be initiated at all….then people feel so disappointed because they really did want to breastfeed….
💛I recognize this myth is perpetuated within certain cultures, and no one corrects these families that genuinely do want to breastfeed!
💛It still happens everyday on postnatal wards, simply ask women & families
💛How do you intend to feed your baby? Even if they are formula feeding…..
💛What myths have you heard relating to breastfeeding, let’s de bunk in the comments

💙NHS Midwife life💙

💙Nhs update pros & cons 7 weeks in
💙I realized a few weeks in I had to reframe my mind, I went into my new trust almost bracing myself for things to turn out bad or that I was tricked into believing that things could be better…and once I’m in the reality will set it…
I realize now that’s from the trauma I hold from my previous trust, I’m still working letting go of that!
💙So focusing on the positives first ⬇️
💙Everyone is genuinely KIND & helpful
💙My community team are wonderful
💙I’ve really enjoyed meeting NEW midwives
💙My leaders are really approachable & helpful
💙Leaders value home birth and birth choices
💙Midwives appear happy and moral is good
💙Most com midwives are experienced band 6
💙Band 5 midwives are well supported
💙Good level of staff
💙I like my area & clinic
💙I’ve attended two home-births and it felt amazing to be back in the birth space in my element💫
💙The support you feel at home births is a TEAM effort, and the next day you get to rest!
💙The work load is manageable
💙Flexible working works I feel trusted
💙I get lunch breaks and I’m finishing on time!
💙I soon start my training in tongue tie division so I’m excited to work with the breastfeeding team!
(All these things should be standard right?)
💙Negatives ⬇️
💙The distance is sometimes a trek
💙IT is an absolute nightmare, my dyslexic brain 🧠 cannot cope with learning so many new systems and it’s honestly made me feel at times I can’t do this anymore, the amount of admin we have and various systems is insane! (Hopefully I’ll get used to it)
💙I’m not a fan of one size fits all nhs AN care, I struggle with that daily and I’m finding ways of delivering information quickly to empower women to EDUCATE themselves, but that’s a challenge for all nhs mws!
💙So overall I’m getting there and there are so many positives to returning & hopefully this new government will invest more in our future nhs🙏🏻
💙Perhaps you are about qualify in Manchester and you might want to join us!
💙What do you like about your NHS trust? ⬇️⬇️⬇️

⁉️Wait…..What⁉️

⁉️Did I hear that correctly?
⁉️You said I LOOK HUGE?

⁉️Imagine if you had a catchy reply….”well you don’t look too hot yourself darling…”🤪
⁉️My client the other day told me someone said wait for it…..

🤎C-section birth recovery🤎

🤎It’s important we talk about c-section birth, planned and unplanned rates are probably the highest they’ve ever been.
🤎I asked lovely Myro to share her top tips for c-section recovery.
📸I adore this image of Myro & cassian age 5 now! Check out his hair! Only 3 days old 😍

Myros top tips ⬇️⬇️⬇️
🤎Because both my c-sections were planned, I was able to prepare for them which improved my recovery.
🤎Don’t exert yourself rest is paramount especially in the first two weeks
Stay upstairs for several days if you don’t have a downstairs bathroom
🤎Adjust the furniture in your bedroom, to allow better movement and have a caddy changing station close by
🤎Bathe your wound regularly at least 2x a day with only water, and once fit to shower lay down afterwards allow your wound to air dry or use a cool hairdryer setting.
🤎Set alarms for your medications or ask your partner to, keep them close by in one place. Take probiotics weeks before c-section & after increase the dose to improve digestion, wind & constipation
🤎Drink plenty of water at least 2l, you will be dehydrated after surgery and this can cause discomfort and constipation I drank a lot of mint tea too!
🤎Invest in BIG knickers I also wore them back to front for fully tummy coverage!
🤎Most of all try not to compare yourself to other mothers and their recovery, you’ve had major surgery & it takes time, be patient and the healing process will be easier, show yourself compassion just like our babies we are all unique
🤎My MIDWIFE top tips to add would be, invest in a mummy mot after 8 weeks with a physio like .mumphysio to further improve your long term recovery & scar therapy.
🤎Do not ignore any signs of infection and get checked immediately should you suspect one.
🤎Focus on optimal Nutrition during pregnancy & postnatally to improve overall health and recovery.
🤎And follow to improve your knowledge and confidence in c-section recovery and for any future pregnancies.
🤎Did you have a C-section? What are your top tips? ⬇️⬇️⬇️

🖤International homebirth day🖤

🖤I nearly missed it ….😶‍🌫️
🖤Here’s my third baby Maria
🖤Second home water birth
🖤9 years ago T +14 7lb 12oz
🖤Check out her transition to life images ✨
🖤Back then home birth was way more accessible
But I was still in the minority…..
🖤Now most women have to fight for a home birth….in the NHS 😢
🖤My wish for this day is that people consider it early on, don’t rule it out, prepare and self educate, do your research so by the third trimester when goal posts are moved, extra scans etc are offered and scare mongering sets in….you have more confidence & knowledge to achieve that home birth, the beauty is the power is within you, you can change your mind at any time!
🖤It’s also my wish more midwives and student midwives could experience what I have….
🖤Once you’ve witnessed home birth it changes you….you can un see it!
🖤Put me a 🏠in the comments if you had one, a 💚if you’ve witnessed one and a ♥️if you desire one 🙌🏽💫✨

☁️Birth trauma enquiry ☁️

☁️Mothers matter too
☁️The report is released today it’s big news!
☁️It’s a very difficult read….😢
☁️As a midwife it does not surprise me, but deeply saddens me that 1:3 women in the Uk suffer birth trauma this report is long over due but a step in the right direction.
☁️I have witnessed many things that are included in this report.
☁️I have sat and held space for women to talk and cry about their trauma their guilt, stigma and shame…days, weeks, months and years after birth!
☁️I have supported women that have tocophobia a fear of giving birth.
☁️I continually campaign with &
& collaborate with other wonderful midwives and birth workers to attempt to change the broken nhs maternity system…
☁️If you are affected by this report or require support you can contact me and many other brilliant charities, organizations and professionals that do care, that do want to end BT.
