Everybody who learns to drive wants to pass first time. Additionally, your family & friends want you to pass first time too. Guess what? So does your driving instructor and your examiner!! In fact, everybody wants you to pass your driving test at the first attempt.

𝗛𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿!!! Not everybody does pass first time, in fact lots of people do not pass first time. People fail driving tests for various reasons…
👍 Simply they are not ready for the test.
👍 Their nerves took over and they did something they don’t usually do on their lessons.
👍 Some people just struggle under test conditions.

As a driving instructor even a mock test doesn’t highlight those real “test nerves”. Sometimes you may need to take a test and find out how you react under the pressure of having an examiner (Sometimes in their official Hi-Viz jacket marking everything you do on their iPad, whilst staring at you throughout the test which can make some people very uncomfortable. Only once that test has completed will we know how you react under pressure.

One promise I will give you is... I will give you every skill required to pass your driving test, then it’s up to you to show those skills to the examiner who takes you on your driving test.

𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 If 𝗔𝗡𝗬 driving instructor promises or guarantee’s you will pass first time, get it in writing and hold them to it. Also ask them what happens if you don’t pass first time. Personally, I would expect free lessons especially as they 𝗚𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗘𝗗 you would pass first time 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 and they didn’t hold up their side of the bargain.

I personally don’t know of any driving instructor that does 𝗚𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗘 you passing your test first time, but if you find one you know what to do.

Driving instructors are known for getting learner drivers to constantly check their mirrors. It's really easy to look in the mirror and see a red car 🚗 (or blue , or any colour) but we'll use red just for this example.
Think about it.... does it matter what colour it is? 𝗡𝗼, Does it matter what make it is? 𝗡𝗼 again. What does matter is 𝗪𝗛𝗢 𝗜𝗦 𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗧 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗧!!!
Every time you check your mirrors you need to understand 𝗘𝗫𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗟𝗬 who is behind you it could be...

🧑‍🦳 𝟵𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀
Doris with the best will in the world will have slower reaction times, if she does have cataracts then her eye sight will be poor (and probably shouldn't be driving) but they do!!!!

👨‍💼 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼'𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
Steve's in an experienced driver but he is in a rush so we can expect to be overtook. Fortunately Steve has lots of experience and knows his car. If he wants to overtake you he will probably take an educated guess as to doing it without causing an accident.

🧢 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗿.
Tarquin is almost the same as Steve, however he has less experience so you could expect him to take more riskier overtakes quite simply because of his/her lack of driving experience.

🇮🇳 𝗔 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀
Take a look in that mirror again, which side is the drivers seat? Does the car have a non-UK number plate. These are easy giveaways that we can expect the driver to do something 'random' quite simply because they don't know our 'rules of the road'

👨‍👨‍👦‍👦 𝗔 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱.
Who's driving the car, are they being distracted by children in the back. Any mum and dad who drives will know exactly what I mean. A distracted driver might not see your brake lights early because little Tommy in the back seat has dropped his Ipad and Peppa Pig has gone! (Poor Peppa)🐽

𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗟𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗜𝗟𝗟 𝗜𝗧 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗡 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗘?

The quick answer is I have no idea without seeing and talking to you. I can only answer that question with national statistics from the DVSA (They guys who conduct your theory and practical tests) they say that you will need around 47 hours of professional instruction (like with me) and a further 20 hours of private practice with family friend or relative.

If I can get you to test standard in less than the recommended time, then I will.

Learning to drive is 𝗡𝗢𝗧 like starting a college course in September and then taking an exam in June or July. It really does take as long as it takes.

Lots of learner drivers have passed their driving test in 20 – 30 hours, but I will also say some learner drivers have taken many more hours than the 47 that the DVSA advise.

Why are those numbers so different, that’s an easy answer, because 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗜𝗦 𝗗𝗜𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗧. Just like in most things some people pick things up quicker than others. For example, I am 56 years old and still unable to swim! That’s probably why I have so much empathy with learner drivers.

It's common for learner drivers (and some full licence holders) to steer the wrong way when reversing.
If you are on of those here's a couple of tips to help.

🚗 Look over your shoulder and steer in the direction you want the rear of the car to go.
🚗 If you use your mirrors more, then point in the direction you want the car to go, then steer in that direction.

PS Don't forget to ensure you do keep looking all around you to check it is safe to continue.

I have cheeky little announcement to make but... You will have to wait until 8:30am on Monday morning to find out what it is.

Both of them were un-phased when, fresh from passing his first two driving instructor tests my son Dean came to 'observe' some driving lessons to help him get an insight as to what really happens on a driving lesson.

Deja Vu !! When I first started to think about becoming a driving instructor was back in 1997 (I know). However I didn’t complete that training and it was 10 years later in 2007 when I managed to get that elusive green badge. Why am I telling you this ?

My son Dean started his driving instructor training in 2014, he also didn’t complete the training.
Just like dad he has left it 10 years as well, there is still one final hurdle to cross but has managed to pass his part 1 (Theory test) and his Part 2 (extended driving test) inside 10 days. Which is a huge achievement.

The fun now begins with his final and most important training to come his part 3 (Quality of teaching). To reach this goal Dean will be sitting in on some of my lessons starting today :) to see what happens on a ‘real’ driving lesson.

Fingers crossed over the coming months Dean will be on the road with his own pupils and Get Driving Today will have a small expansion onto Halifax and surrounding areas.

When you are learning to drive it is really easy to think if you hear a car blast it's horn, that its aimed at you. Where in all honesty it probably isn't. Especially if you are on the move when you hear the dreaded beep.

Before you start thinking it was your fault have you considered it was ...
✅ Just an idiot (Yes they exist, you did know that didn't you)
✅ Someone getting a touch of road rage at another car making them run a couple of seconds late.
✅ Somebody trying to get their 'friends' attention, their friend is probably hiding with embarrassment at this stage 😂😂😂

As a driving instructor it's my job to find not just the good in how you drive but also the bad. My job would be so easy if all my customers never made a mistake..let's be honest though...𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘐'𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘫𝘰𝘣.

Sometimes we have to let mistakes happen as thats how some people learn, and yes sometimes it's important to not let mistakes happen quite simply because we want to keep everyone alive.

When a mistake happens it's important how the message to the pupil is delivered. I've heard horror stories of instructors shouting at pupils and reducing them to tears, which in my opinion is just wrong. My style? This tends to be delivered gently with a serious hint of sarcasm. The mistake has been made, the pupil knows it, so why do I need to make them feel even worse about it?

I have been doing this job now for almost 16 years 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦. Those 16 years though are full of experience and I can 99.9% assure you that any mistake you make I have not only seen before, but has been fixed easily.

It always amuses 😂 me when I discuss parallel parking with my pupils. In 90% of cases they reply with a a bit of a grimace 😱😱 and say something along the lines of... That's hard.,.. or my mum / dad can't do that.
