The Royal Berkshire Medical Museum and Archive - Berkshire Family History Society The Museum is open to the public on the first and third Sundays in the month from 2.00pm to 4.30pm. It is open at other times by arrangement for group bookings (please phone 0118 9549371). See below for specific archival enquiries.

Heritage Open Days take place 8-17 September this year and in Reading we will have over 30 talks, walks, exhibitions, open days and much more. Look out for the programme on 4 August. This year's theme is Creativity Unwrapped and there will be lots of creative events as part of the Reading offering. As usual, you will also be able to find full details on whatsonreading.com as well as the national heruitageopendays.org site.

2 cancellations this afternoon for Heritage Open Days in Reading - Reading Synagogue and Reading Old Cemetery Victorian Perambulations. Next Saturday, St Michael's Bell Ringing also cancelled. All other events going ahead as far as we know at this stage.

Heritage Open Days in Reading start next Friday 9 September for 10 days. We've just finished this year's Heritage Open Days leaflet for Reading. Lots of great events being planned, both in person and digitally. Hope to have the printed leaflet available to pick up from Reading libraries etc by mid August. This year's festival takes place 10-19 September and has a theme of Edible England. Heritage Open Days 2020 in Reading go ahead starting tomorrow for 9 days (11-20 September 2020). We have 24 in-person and digital events for you to choose from with a number of the events picking up this year's festival theme of Hidden Nature. From pond dipping to virtual house tours, dawn walks in the meadows to buses, allotments to influential women. Loads to see and do in Reading, from helping stitch a new Reading Bayeux Tapestry to an exhibition of 20 Reading artists based on Wilde’s Ballad of Reading Gaol, demonstration of the fabulous Father Willis organ at Reading Concert Hall, behind the bookshelves at Reading Central Library, celebrate Basildon Park’s Indian heritage, tours of former Broad Street Chapel (now Waterstones) or research your own family history at the Centre for Heritage and Family History.

Reading’s museums are putting on special events for Heritage Open Days this year:- Museum of English Rural Life tours, create your own archaeology book at the Ure Museum, talk on Jane Austen’s Reading or exploring Katesgrove at Reading Museum, special openings of Royal Berkshire Hospital Medical Museum, the Mills archive at Watlington House.

See behind the scenes in historic buildings not usually open to the public for Heritage Open Days. Reading Crown Court, Junction Arch, behind the scenes at the Hexagon Theatre or Berkshire Records Office, guided tours of the University’s London Road campus or Jane Austen’s former school room – Abbey Gateway.

Many of Reading’s places of worship are great buildings with amazing history. For Heritage Open Days, they are putting on special events: Greyfriars, St James Church, Reading Synagogue, St John’s, St Mary’s, St Peter’s, St Giles, Abbey Baptist Church, Reading Quaker Meeting House and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

A wide range of heritage walks to choose from during this year’s Heritage Open Days (13-22 September). Explore Sonning or West Reading’s conservation areas, Terry’s Walkabouts new photographic and architecture walks, the history of the Caversham Road area, industrial Reading, the future development of Reading or walk in the footsteps of Oscar Wilde. All free, but booking required in most cases.

Many historic places of religious worship are opening to offer special events for the 25th anniversary of Heritage Open Days. Greyfriars is the most complete example of Franciscan architecture in Britain, St James’s Church was Pugin’s first church design or visit Reading Synogogue designed in a Moorish style.

Local experts will be on hand throughout the 10 day celebration of Reading’s heritage. Learn about historical figures such as Oscar Wilde and Jane Austen, take up one of the many guided walks available, or add to this contemporary reworking of the Bayeux Tapestry that was started in 2018.
