Heritage Open Days take place 8-17 September this year and in Reading we will have over 30 talks, walks, exhibitions, open days and much more. Look out for the programme on 4 August. This year's theme is Creativity Unwrapped and there will be lots of creative events as part of the Reading offering. As usual, you will also be able to find full details on whatsonreading.com as well as the national heruitageopendays.org site.

2 cancellations this afternoon for Heritage Open Days in Reading - Reading Synagogue and Reading Old Cemetery Victorian Perambulations. Next Saturday, St Michael's Bell Ringing also cancelled. All other events going ahead as far as we know at this stage.

It's today! Heritage Open Days in Reading starts today. First of 10 consecutive days of heritage and history events. Over 40+ venues and organisations taking part. Today - Greyfriars Church, RDG Bayeux Tapestry workshop at Malmaison Hotel, The MERL People Power gallery tour, In Reading Gaol exhibition at The Riverside Museum (20 local artists), Sonning guided walks, St James' Church, St Mary's Church, St Giles Church, Waterstones Local Village History talk, and History of the Forbury talk at The Roseate Hotel. Loads to see and do in Reading, from helping stitch a new Reading Bayeux Tapestry to an exhibition of 20 Reading artists based on Wilde’s Ballad of Reading Gaol, demonstration of the fabulous Father Willis organ at Reading Concert Hall, behind the bookshelves at Reading Central Library, celebrate Basildon Park’s Indian heritage, tours of former Broad Street Chapel (now Waterstones) or research your own family history at the Centre for Heritage and Family History.

For Heritage Open Days, they are putting on special events: Greyfriars, St James Church, Reading Synagogue, St John’s, St Mary’s, St Peter’s, St Giles, Abbey Baptist Church, Reading Quaker Meeting House and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Many historic places of religious worship are opening to offer special events for the 25th anniversary of Heritage Open Days. Greyfriars is the most complete example of Franciscan architecture in Britain, St James’s Church was Pugin’s first church design or visit Reading Synogogue designed in a Moorish style.
