Thought I'd mark with my favourite Australian Viognier, the Virgilius Viognier from Yalumba. Mid-gold, the nose offers a fantastically complex blend of apricots, honey, pears, vanilla spice, and ginger. On the palate, it's rich, powerful and unctuous but as they haven't tried to over-extract it, it's also subtle and well-balanced. Peach, melon, and apricot fruit melds with cardamon, almonds and limes to give a gloriously textured glassful. Limm Communications

A press sample of the Contino Olvio 2021 arrived on Monday so thought we'd look at it. Tim Atkin awarded it 99 points, and the Wine Advocate gave it 96+. While I don't go in for scores, it was extraordinary. While I love all things CVNE Vino, there's something oh-so-special about Contino, especially in a vintage as good as this.

Blackcurrant leaves, orange peel, blackberry, sage and spices on the nose. Inky, seamless palate with magnificent extra and such poise. Plums, black berries, cream, coffee, citrus, and fresh, tangy red berries on the firm finish. Ordered a case, I just hope I can leave some of it to mature as it will be breathtaking in a few years.

Last night we looked at the 2014 releases of Belle Epoque. While all were delicious, all have a long way to go. The white was ghostly pale, with a fresh, assertive nose of citrus, white berries, and a touch of yeast. Quite lean at first, after a few minutes it opened up and the red and white berries were joined by pears, peach stones, and a little creamy brioche. The rose was slightly fuller and more forward. Stunning nose of strawberries, cherries, redcurrants and flowers. In the mouth its shared the white’s reserve, but once the air got to it offered up raspberries, cherries, sherbet, and cream. The finish was spicey and clean. The Blancs de Blancs looked beautiful, the bead so precise and even rising through a white gold expanse, but it was standoffish to the point of rudeness. The nose was muted with only subtle hints of white peach, hawthorn, citrus, cream and vanilla detectable. On the palate it was slightly more forthcoming, but the taut, lean profile and impressive grip kept everything locked down. After around 30 minutes, it blossomed and gave vanilla foam, crushed nuts, lemons, and minerals. All are going to be wonderful in a few years, but the Blanc de Blancs is going to be really special.

A true golden oldie. We found this bottle of 1947 laying in the cellar. Hand-blown bottle, a heavy sediment of tartrate, but otherwise it looked like it was bottled a decade ago. When the cork finally came out, it offered a gentle, slightly fungal nose, with marzipan, dried white fruits and smoke. Very gentle on the palate, there were echoes of the power and sweetness it once possessed, but now it's very subdued with flavours of dried white fruits, crushed nuts, slightly waxy with a touch of varnish. Dry, there was some richness, but it's now more like an old white Graves.

A beautiful bottle of Maison Louis Jadot Chablis Fourchaume 2018. Showing beautifully. Ripe nose of apples, melon, and lemons. Palate perfectly balances freshness and weight, offering plenty of white fruits with minerals, citrus, undercut by oyster shell minerality, and honey.

First encounter with the recently released Camarcanda 2020 from Gaja. Critics seem united in their opinions this is the best-ever vintage of this esteemed Bolgheri Cabernet blend, and on tasting it we'd have to agree. While it's not the biggest we've tasted - the 2018 and 2015 have more weight - the purity of fruit is remarkable. Leay Cab Franc blackcurrants and juicy Cab Sauv blackberries make for a formidable, yet elegant and intense glassful. Rounded, firm tannins, and tangy acidity, this will be wonderful in a few years.https://www.mwhwine.co.uk/products/camarcanda-camarcanda-2020-case

The latest addition to my collection. A magnum of 1990 Petrus. Having had the 1990 in bottle - well, a glass at a tasting - the temptation is quite strong. Just need to resist the temptation to look at the price on WineSearcher.

Petrus 1987 in mganum. We picked this up (relatively) cheaply and it's a lesson in Bordeaux. 1987 was roundly slated when it hit the market - unfairly in our eyes, it was just massively overshadowed by the glorious 1986s and the excellent 1988s.
This is rated by by many as the wine of the vintage with the caution that it will take time to come around. When we looked at this we found it was fully mature. The colour remained deep, but the nose was showing tertiary notes of dried leaves, woodsmoke, earth, and red berries. The palate was a game of two halves. Initially plump - cherry, mulberry, dried blackberries and a suggestion of chocolate - a leaner side followed, with red fruits, some stalkiness, and a bitter, vegetal tone. The finish was a battle between these two sides, alternating richness and austerity. If this was sensibly priced it would make for an interesting experience, but as its Petrus it's expensive and it goes to show that no matter how good the producer, you can't make a great wine in an indifferent year.

1996 Chateau Margaux. I was gifted this while I was a wine broker back in the late 1990s, and while I've always been sceptical of 100-point 'perfect' wines, I'd have to say this was utterly sensational. Opened and promptly decanted, the nose was quite closed on opening, and the colour remains solidly dark and brooding. Two hours on, and it bloomed. A heady bouquet of blackcurrants, cedar, vanilla, and violets with woodsmoke and earth toward the back. In the mouth, it's amazing youthful, powerful, lusciously appointed and seamless. Layer upon layer of black fruits interspersed with cream, red berries, hints of clove, leather, and Asian spices. Utterly mouth-filling, this texture and depth seem endless, but there's restraint, elegance, and purity here. I've had the 1961, the 1982 and the 1990 and this, in my humble opinion, is better. Drinking well now, this has a long future ahead of it. A perfect wine? It's damn close!

MWH Wine Merchants: Our Story

MWH Wine Merchants was set up by me, Mike Hall, in 2008. By then I'd been buying and selling wines for some years; working with some of the UK's leading merchants including Laytons and Jeroboams.

The Home Of Affordable Fine Wines

Initially I'd intended MWH to be a wholesaler and to deal with restaurants, hotels and other trade clients. Having founded the business on the premise of it being the home of affordable fine wines, however, I soon received a flattering number of requests from people to sell wines on a retail basis too. So, I took the decision to open MWH up to private clients and I've never looked back...
