I’m still a big fan of the bobbin frame, what’s your take on yellow?
I often think that it can be tricky to hang unless you have contrasting wall colours.

Creating traditional and distressed look frames is one of my favourite things to do.
There is always a risk i’ll go ‘too far’ or be ‘too messy’ and I’m sure some would argue that this one has.
But as with all picture framing, it is entirely subjective and that is what makes it so damn wonderful.

Such a dream to create these frames for original screen printed Beatles posters.
Lovingly applied to canvas backings, making my job much easier, they sit within these bold and super vibrant neon boxes.

I’ve introduced Sapele to my range of available timbers.
Gorgeous in colour and grain, and incredibly versatile.

Matched right next to a ‘Yorkshire’ skateboard deck. Housed in a neon red, fluorescent frame.

The ‘bobbin’
A lot of people know me as one of the early up-takers of the bobbin frame style, many are factory made now, mine have never been ‘off the shelf’ and always match on the corners ❤️
Always made by hand and always painted with a spray finish. The ‘bobbin’ created quite the buzz in 2021 and that hubbub continues today, long may it carry on.
I find great satisfaction in creating these frames, any size, any colour. Each unique.
A testament (I hope) to the majority of my framing work.

When does ‘bespoke’ become ‘’hand finished’ and when does that becomes ‘custom’ or ‘one-off’
I often find it tricky to get across to people who are unfamiliar with my work that what I create IS hand finished, by this I don’t mean the silly”hand cooked” meal deal sandwiches, I mean…. I MADE IT!
This frame style, (I feel) flys the flag for the truly unique nature of 90% of work coming out of the workshop. Gold leaf sight edge to match a gilded beveled mount board.
A closed corner(of sorts) frame profile that has evidentially distressed and created by a human hand/paintbrush, Not a machine or a factory, but created with heart, passion and experience. These things can’t be taught, luckily the techniques can be.

A pair of incredibly detailed cross stitch.
This pair were framed in a compassionate Matt black bamboo frame profile, emulating the gold bamboo used in so many ornithological and botanical studies. This time in a more contemporary colour but with a gilded packer to separate the glazing from the artworks while adding a nod to the gold stitching of the piece.

I just can’t help but love this piece within this fantatsic neon acrylic frame.

Rope twist appliqué
Appliqué in framing is as old as framing itself (in one way or another)
Even with modern, contemporary styles of thin natural timbers and neon colours, the appliqué is still very popular. The style of course changes with the fashions but I will say, it’s hard to beat a ropetwist.
This selection was created for an early collection of works for who has the most fantastic eye for home decor and artworks, she has outstanding ready to hand original artworks in stock, for sale.

It is not always the most obvious ideas that work the best.
Having the confidence to experiment breeds a positive space in which ‘failing’ is much more of a learning experience instead of a mistake to be punished.
Be playful, don’t be scared to share new ideas.

I love painted bevels, I hate coloured mount boards.
Hate is strong, you’re right.
I’m simply not shy in recommending that a painted bevel offers and much more subtle(possibly not in this example) use of colour and more often that not, creates a far stronger impact on the overall piece.
I obviously can and do, utilise the endless range of colour mount boards, but painting or even gilding the bevel of a mount (to me) screams quality craftsmanship.
Oh and for the framers….it’s just posca pens…. And no it didn’t take very long. 😂

When does the frame become part of the artwork?
Of course framing is, by occupation, part of the artwork.
But at what stage does the style of framing become an addition too, or indeed a distraction from, the art itself.
I strongly believe there is much fun to be had in adding excitement to a frame, however, I attempt to tread very carefully on the edge of subtlety.
Wishing (as you may expect) to merely add to the enjoyment of the artwork and never to detract from it.
This in itself is entirely subjective, much like all art.
This artwork and frame is still available for sale at ( I think 🤔)

This profile remains one of my favourites.
This frame featured in 2022 exhibition , ‘Painting a Garden’ and become know as ‘The Sophie’ as a result.
Unfortunately the frame has seen been discontinued and as a result I often find myself trying to recreate the simple aesthetic of gilded sight edge and painted wash panel, but with differing profiled mouldings, with varying degrees of success.

Wonderful botanicals.
Made even more special in a timeless gilded ropetwist with a gilded bevel, duck egg mount.
I can not only frame, but also source botanicals and other delicate decor similar to these so please get in touch if you’d love to have something similar on your walls.
