Antique Indian Miniature Painting of Krishna: 18th century

Krishna on Nari Ashva (composed of female attendants as a horse), before a naturalistic landscape, gouache, undated.
Watercolour, gouache and graphite on medium slightly textured cream laid paper. The colours are made from natural materials vegetable dye and stones traditional in old Indian paintings.

The Kandarpa Ashwa or Nari Ashva (or woman-horse) is a stunning and rare painting from India. The inspiration for the image of Nari Ashva comes from the book Rasa Panchaka by Divakara Das of Orissa. the Gopis are making a vehicle of love (the horse) and inviting their Lord Krishna to ride on it.
The Kandarpa theme is essentially the love theme, sometimes with erotic overtones, of Pattachitra depicting various imageries from Raas Leela. This theme involves the Gopis (consorts) whose bodies are arranged in such a manner as to create the impression of a supportive horse transporting their Lord while Krishna rides joyfully holding his flute.

Paint losses throughout. Small pin holes are visible when held to the light. Small nicks, tears and losses throughout the border. The reverse shows small paper patch repairs.

A rare George III reverse glass painting titled ‘Joseph, Intepreteth Pharoah’s Dreams’.

The painting is titled ‘Joseph, Intepreteth Pharoah’s Dreams’.
Gen. Ch 4 “Behold there come seven years of plenty. And there shall arise after them seven years of famine” N 29 15.5 in
(39cm) wide is catalogued as English, made c.1808.

Beneath the picture is inscribed ‘Pub Feb 17, 1808, I Hinton No 44 Well St off Oxford St, London (No 44 Well St, London, now is a Pharmacy).

An unusual find in our collection of pictures. These pictures are painted onto the glass and viewed through the opposite side of the pane. The technique is thought to have originated in eastern Europe during the Middle Ages. In the 18th century, however, it was common for these works to be created in China for export to Europe.

Carved decoration to the small proportioned solid Mahogany case. Full working order.

Oil Painting of a Noble Lady in a Victorian dress, oil on canvas, laid on board and framed, attractive and well-executed painting, unsigned.
There are some chippings on the frame as seen in the pictures. The subject looks similar to Adelina Patti painted by Franz Winterhalter in 1860 (now displayed in Harewood House West Yorkshire, in the Yellow Drawing Room).

Antique Louis Philippe Portico Clock
Beautiful Louis Philippe Ormulu mounted ebonised Portico Mantle Clock, unsigned, from the second quarter of the 19th century.
The circular eight-day counterwheel bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by decorative ‘gridiron’ pendulum incorporating floral rosette cast bob and serpent decorated yoke, the backplate stamped 948, the circular silvered brass engine-turned Roman numeral dial with pierced blued steel hands within differing floral bloom cast bezel, the case with tablet upstand to the entablature with ogee cornice and the basket of flowers centred inset inhabitated foliate scroll cast mount to lintel over the dial and visible pendulum set between four Roman Doric columns with engine turned gilt caps and bases, the plinth base fronted with a conforming mount over canted skirt and small compressed bun feet.

Size 50 cm (19.75ins) high, 26 cm (10.25 ins) width, 14,5 cm (5.75 ins) deep.

This is a beautifully crafted French Grecian Revival alabaster clock garniture, 9.5 cm circular dial inscribed upon enamel reserves with Roman numerals, twin winding holes, 8-day movement striking on a bell, the drum head case ap-plied with lion mask bosses, is 44cm high, flanked by a pair of four-light candelabra, 38 cm high, c.1870.

Marie Antoinette style mantle clock;

This is a beautiful Antique Marie Antoinette style mantle clock made by Victoria & Albert Museum, London. This Porcelain Gilt Blue Mantle clock was made by Franklin Mint, identical to the clock that measured the hours in Marie Antoinette’s rooms in Versailles, officially sponsored by the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The dial of 8 cms diameter is painted with Zodiac and Roman/Arabic numerals. It is decorated with accents of 22 ct gold, and over genuine 60 crystals and has high-quality Franz Hermle 8-day jewelled movement.

Beautiful 19th century French gilt bronze ormolu Mantle Clock

This is a fabulous French figural clock with stunning gilt case made of true fire gilt ormolu. It is ornately decorated with a sculpture of a lady holding a book in one hand supported by a cherub, the attention to detail and quality is incredible. There are swags of leaves and berries and floral motifs around the dial up to the base.

The gilding and chasing are second to none, very bright and crisp and in exceptional condition.
The original enamel dial is perfect with no chips, cracks or crazing. It has the original key and pendulum

A stunningly beautiful clock in exceptional condition which will give great pleasure for many years to come.

Regarded as one of the pillars of contemporary art education & a significant contributor to the modernist art movement in Bengal, Isha Mahammad was educated in the strict traditions of British Academic art practice at the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta from where he obtained his diploma in 1958. In 1968 he travelled to the Dusseldorf Academy in West Germany to study graphic art. Here he encountered the German Expressionist group & was, in particular, impressed & influenced by the work of Max Beckman. A highly respected & widely travelled artist, he held shows in London, West Germany & was invited to participate in the 6th & 10th Biennale of Asian Art in Dhaka. His works can be found in the permanent collection of The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi; Burka Academy of Art & Culture, Calcutta; The Museum of Bengal Modern Art, Calcutta; State Academy of Art, Manipur; Academy of Art & Culture, Jammu & Kashmir; Museum fur Indische Kinst, Delhem, Berlin amongst others.

Florence W Whitfield 1879 - 1925: Boy doing his shoelaces for his first time
Florence Westwood Whitfield, one of the few famous female artists. The only other piece of her art I have come across is the one in Birmingham Museum titled “Christmas Roses”.
This is a beautiful painting of a boy trying to lace his shoe for the first time.
Craquelure is seen throughout the canvas and especially at the bottom right where it must have been hung closest to the fireplace. Some chippings of the frame have come off all around here and there of the gilt frame. It is a delightful picture altogether.
