Behind the scenes - A portrait session with Ken
I recently posted on my town's local page asking for volunteers for a quick portrait. The idea is to use any downtime I have to create work.
It's easy to procrastinate and waste time when not actively shooting or editing so I set myself the task of utilising all the time I had to shoot portraits and build up my portfolio.
I've been experimenting with this new lighting set-up inspired by the work of Martin Schoeller. The more portraits I take the closer I am to defining a body of work. So far there hasn't been a connection between the people I have photographed, but with each sitting, I'm thinking about how I might apply this and create a project which says something more than the technique itself.
So Ken kindly volunteered and came to my studio a few weeks back. One thing I love about these sessions is the chance to simply meet new and interesting people. It normally only takes 10-20 minutes but it's enough time to chat and learn about their personal story.
Thanks Ken π
Some behind-the-scenes GoPro footage of a recent portrait session in my studio.
These four siblings were great from the off. Comfortable in front of the camera and happy to laugh at my really bad dad jokes (it's the best material I have).
This was a portfolio shoot, continuing with my setup inspired by Martin Schoeller's two-light system.

*** Three Generations - A new style of portrait ***
Posting onto YouTube is new for me. I'm wanting to put my thoughts, behind the scenes and work on there so I can better share it.
Production level is questionalble but it'll do for now.
I'd love for you to take a look, like and comment with your thoughts.
I'm going to be photographing more portraits in this style. If you would like to discuss your kids/family's next portrait session, get in touch.

Just came across this blog post by the shoe designer Harriet Wilde of a wedding I photographed in Norfolk. Always lovely to see my work featured on other suppliers' websites.

Hardwick Moat Weddings in Cambridgeshire sits at the top of a farmers track away from all the noise and traffic of the road. For guests, the only way up to the marquee is on a tractor, what more could you want?
There's glamping options, rolling fields, a bridge and of course the spacious marquee for the party. Great venue, great backdrop for wedding photography..
Take look at this blog post for photos from a wedding I shot there which included an awesome tug of war!

The perfect wedding at Coltsfoot Barn in Hertfordshire. This was my first visit to Colstfoot and boy was it a good'n!
The grounds have so many nooks and crannies that you can explore all within a close space.
One of the highlights was of course the who were quite cheeky to say the least.

Wedding photography is for the generations.
Who here has visited their family and spent hours looking over old photographs and reminiscing? I have. Every time I visit my parents we look through a huge box of prints, ask questions, laugh and have a cuppa.
Your wedding photography should be no different. The photos will outlast you and will teach the children of your children all about how you tied the knot.
That's why for me it's so important on a wedding day to capture the small moments. The little 'looks' and gestures between family and friends. Laughs, tears and all that good stuff. These are the photographs that link together the big moments and tell the story of the day.
Narrative is king.
I love this image from Casey & Ben's recent wedding. The morning prep was full of laughter and anticipation. I spotted Darcy sat eating some pre-wedding Wotsits sat below a framed family wedding photo from years ago hung proudly on the family wall. Two generations in one photo, this image now tells a story.
After the morning of prep we went to the amazing for a seriously cracking day!
***Royston Doorstep Portraits 2023 - COMING SOON***
A few years back I ran doorstep portrait sessions in and around Royston. A chance for families to capture a portrait in front of their front door, a representation the home they have together.
Ever since then, I've been asked if I will run them again. And as you can tell from the nature of this post....I am!
I'm still fleshing out the details, dates and times. But for now, keep your eyes peeled on my page as well as my Instagram page () for more information in the coming weeks.

Getting married in 2024/25? Some dates still available. Get in touch and let's see if your date is free.

Tomorrow I'm back at the amazing South Farm. I always love going back to the venue I got married at in 2014 (gosh, time has flown).
The tossing of the wedding bouquet is a long-held tradition at weddings. It's a chance to have some light relief with friends (of the single kind) to see who might catch the flowers and therefore be destined to be married themselves. But at Longstowe Hall recently I photographed and filmed a rather different type of bouquet throw.

Storytelling through images.
Your love story is unique and beautiful. When memories have faded and you want to share the story of your wedding day with friends and family, let the photographs tell it for you.
As well as capturing the milestone moments of your wedding, Gareth has a well trained eye and distinct talent for recording all of the tiny, intricate details that build the real story of your celebration.
The cheeky pageboy swiping a finger of icing from the back of the cake, the tears in the eyes of the bride's father when he first catches sight of his daughter in her dress and the cascading confetti after the ceremony - Gareth won't miss a beat.

Barn weddings are a great way to mix the old with the new. The rustic and the modern.
https://www.garethjphotography.com/blog/three-charming-wedding-barn-venues-near-me
Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties have some great barn wedding venues like Milling Barn, South Farm, Bassmead Manor Barns and so many more. So of course I put together a little post all about it.
Did you get married at one of the featured barn wedding venues?

One of my favourite wedding venues to work at is South Farm in Hertfordshire.
The main reason is because it's where I got married back in 2014. And so when I get to photograph a wedding there it always reminds me of my great day with Lauren.
South Farm has so many great areas to explore and take photographs in that each wedding feels so different.
I've now put together my thoughts and some of my work on a new page of my website https://www.garethjphotography.com/south-farm-wedding-photographer
It's all in the details.
Throughout the wedding day, I always try to photograph the little things. The items and features that when seen alongside the rest of the day's moments help to tell the story.
Check out these cute flower girl sandals waiting to plod down the aisle at Longstowe Hall.
Thanks for sharing Flowers By Lauren H .
This one is super cute. It's surprising how many weddings I have worked at where the pooch has been the starring attraction
