Warriors Winter Warmer Produces Hot Stuff

The Wightlink Warriors experiment of hosting a ‘Winter Warmer’ track spectacular proved a rip-roaring success as 63 riders ignored the intermittent slight drizzle and produced 40 heats of close quarter racing at Smallbrook Stadium yesterday.

With speedway, flat track and grass track (GT140) represented, the meeting had something for everyone and produced a super exhibition of machinery handling skills and great racing warmly appreciated by both local fans and some who had travelled from Peterborough, Plymouth and the Midlands to enjoy some out-of-season action.

And it was quite a sight with some races having 12 riders on track at one time whilst other heats pitted conventional petrol power against the latest electric bike technology.

Fittingly the main finals that rounded the meeting out were all races of great quality, skill and determination from all competitors and drawing a very positive response from Wightlink Warriors co-owner Barry Bishop who said,

“What an excellent training meeting ridden under true race conditions. I have to admit to a bit of concern as the light rain in the air lingered around the stadium, however not one rider complained about conditions, they just rolled their sleeves up and got on with their racing in a terrific spirit of cooperation and at the end of the meeting I was delighted to receive many compliments which makes me think we should try this again fairly soon”.

It’s with great sadness we have decided to make the decision to call off tomorrows meeting.

We hope the early call will allow people to move on their ferries and ultimately save everyone, including us, money no one wants to waste.

We have never once taken the decision to call off a meeting lightly the work involved to prepare and build up to race day is significant and the additional work to cancel equally so.

While we never view any call off as wrong we do know how much you miss your speedway when it’s cancelled so we are all really sorry.

Hopefully working with Dave Johnson we will will try to include the J.A.P. Championship next week.

Hang in there, summer is just around the corner 😞

IAN CLARK WINS GT140 ISLAND MASTERS TITLE

Ian Clark (pictured) was the winner of the inaugural NORA GT 140 Island Masters title at the Smallbrook Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Amongst a field that contained eleven of the top twelve ranked competitors in the UK, Clark - the current National Champion - continued the form that recently took him to the title with a power-packed showing, riding unbeaten during the night and recording the fastest time of the meeting along the way. It really is turning into a season to remember for the former Peterborough speedway rider.

With eighteen competitors taking part in six rider races, it was a very entertaining spectacle watching how the riders adapted to a shale surface rather than grass and it’s credit to everyone who contributed to plenty of close quarter action, all rounded off by a very competitive A final where the battle for minor places produced one of the races of the night. In the end Lowestoft based Steve Newsham came home safely in second place closely followed by Kevin Gwillam with Max Broadhurst, Chad Wirtzfeld and Mark Scopes completing the final finishing order.

B Final winner Jordan Cross will be cursing a fall that probably cost him a place in the A final whilst C final winner Connor Sargeant showed plenty of potential and would certainly be prepared for the slightly different style of track action in future.

Wightlink Warriors co-owner Barry Bishop reflected on the meeting saying,

“I enjoyed that, and I hope our supporters did too. Certainly, the riders that I have spoken to said they had a great time so that gives me confidence to think that we should repeat the meeting next season. Thanks to Adam Hawker for his work in helping coordinate the event and I look forward to working with him again”.

Qualifying Scores:

Ian Clark 20, Chad Wirtzfeld 19, Steve Newsham 17, Max Broadhurst 16, Mark Scopes 16, Kevin Gwillam 14, Luke Wicks 13, Luke Tuck 11, Jordan Cross 10, Wayne Broadhurst 10, Adam Hawker 7, Darren Sargeant 7, Connor Sargeant 6, Richard Knight 4, Thomas Wilding 4, Vinny Smith 4, Jed Rolph 2, Lester Denham 0.

C Final: C. Sargeant, Smith, Knight, Wilding, Denham, Rolph (ret.).

B Final: Cross, Wicks, Tuck, Hawker, D. Sargeant, W. Broadhurst (ns.).

A Final: Clark, Newsham, Gwillam, M. Broadhurst, Wirtzfeld, Scopes.

Supporting the main event were nine interesting demonstration races featuring seven riders from the Warriors youth section and yet again they showed how much they have come on during the summer. Special mention to Charlie Green, Ryan Ingram and Charlie Southwick who all clocked their fastest race times of the season.

Also in action were the Wightlink Wizards. They took on the Carmarthen Dragons who, despite losing young Charlie Wood to injury, were on fire running out winners by 14 points to 21. Wizards’ rider Morgan Williams won all three of his races and clocked his fastest four lap time so far, however the visitors all round strength was the deciding factor.

Scores:

Wizards: Morgan Williams 9, Steph Whitlock 1, Harley Freeman 3, Dan Lee 1.

Dragons: Jacob Fellows 8+1, Charlie Wood 0, Bailey Fellows 2+2, Kai Ward 11.

Warriors Host First Ever GT140 Island Masters Event At Smallbrook

This week’s shale track action at the Smallbrook Stadium switches to TUESDAY 22nd August and will be a first chance for track racing enthusiasts to see a full scale GT140 race meeting as 18 riders from around the country battle it out for the inaugural GT140 Island Masters Title. All fifteen races will consist of six riders who will each take four rides with accumulated points qualifying the participants for inclusion in either C, B or A Finals. The meeting is being sponsored by Mark Cooper IFA@trulyindependant.

The GT140 class, an off shoot of conventional grasstrack racing, was launched in 2017 by Jed Rolph (who will be racing in the event) and has grown rapidly in popularity as racing costs are relatively modest and sit at affordable levels. Successful trials at Smallbrook have encouraged co-owners Barry Bishop and Martin Widman to promote a full-scale meeting with the full backing of the NORA organisation.

Speedway followers will be interested to see Island regular Chad Wirtzfeld taking on the cream of the class with 2023 British GT140 Grasstrack Champion Ian Clark (pictured) - formerly of the Peterborough Panthers - heading an exciting field that includes several riders at the top of the 2022 ACU grading list, not to mention Wayne and Max Broadhurst, Luke Tuck and Vinny Smith all of whom have had outings in various competitions on the Island this season.

The expected line should include:

Darren Sargeant, Thomas Wilding, Connor Sargeant, Mark Scopes, Vinny Smith, Jed Rolph, Adam Hawker, Ian Clark, Max Broadhurst, Kevin Gwillam, Chad Wirtzfeld, Lester Denham, Luke Tuck, Wayne Broadhurst, Luke Wicks, Richie Knight, Jordan Cross and Steve Newsham.

As usual, gates will open at 5:15pm, with the main event preceded at 6:15pm with Youth speedway racing. The GT140’s get under way at 7:00pm and a training development match between the Wightlink Wizards and Carmarthen Dragons integrated into the evenings racing.

The club are always happy to receive good luck messages or dedications to be read out during the course of the meeting and this can best be done by logging on to the Warriors website (www.warriorsspeedway.com) scrolling to the bottom of the page and filling in the template available there.

Wightlink Warriors Secure Speedway League Title

IOW 32 Sittingbourne 29 Cradley 29

Aggregate: IOW 96, Sittingbourne 81, Cradley 74, Plymouth 30.

The Isle of Wight Wightlink Warriors were crowned the inaugural Nora No Brakes Racing League Champions at Smallbrook Stadium last night as they held off the attentions of close rivals Sittingbourne and Cradley in an entertaining meeting that produced one race time that was the fastest at the circuit since April 2017.

That rip-roaring race win went to up-and-coming GB starlet Freddy Hodder who was representing Sittingbourne on the night, his time of 68.0 seconds eclipsing the previous recent best of 68.3 seconds set last summer. Hodder (who featured in the race of the night with Warriors Ben Morley in heat 12) alongside Kiwi Jake Turner were in great form for the Crusaders registering six wins out of ten and with just a little more backup could have caused an upset.

Sadly, Plymouth were missing from this closing round having encountered rider availability issue and absences also hampered Cradley who were forced to use the Rider Replacement facility for Paul Starke (van breakdown) and brought in Mickie Simpson to cover for Andre Compton who was a late withdrawal. The bulk of the Heathens scoring came from Young Lion Ben Trigger who recorded 17 points from a marathon seven ride stint with Simpson and James Laker also battling bravely over their six outings.

And so to the Warriors, themselves stripped of flamboyant Aussie Brayden McGuinness stranded on the Continent, who brought in local racer Morgan Williams. He didn’t trouble the scorers but provided strong off-track support to his other three team mates whose solidarity was enough to get them over the line. Ben Morley, Arran Butcher and George Congreve have been ever-present in the series and their great teamwork has been the cornerstone of the Warriors success in bringing The Michael Richardson Memorial Trophy to Smallbrook.

Co-owner Barry Bishop was clearly thrilled with a night of super racing from the main event riders, the youth contingent and the Flat Track racers as he said,

“I’m absolutely delighted that the Wightlink Warriors have secured the first Nora No Brakes Racing League crown and it’s a bit like a fairytale really. The riders are the real stars of our show and deserve great credit because they have worked together with Steve Piper to overcome a few hiccoughs along the way and have come out on top.

I’d also like to say thanks to the management and riders from Sittingbourne, Cradley and Plymouth. It has been a collaborative effort between the four of us and I hope we can improve the product even more for 2024 and a word for Roy Barton at NORA Motorsport who has been behind us every step of the way and whilst thanking people I must mention our amazing team of volunteers who beaver away behind the scenes and on race day to ensure our patrons have the best value for money experience possible.

Wow, it sure feels good right now”.

Scorers:

IOW: Ben Morley 13, Arran Butcher 10+2, George Congreve 9+2, Morgan Williams 0.

Sittingbourne: Jake Turner 13, Feddy Hodder 12, Nathan Hargrave 2+2, Jason Garrad 2.

Cradley: Ben Trigger 17, Mickie Simpson 7+1, James Laker 5+4.

Reigning Champions Defend Speedway Titles

Nora British Speedway Champions Jason Edwards and Katie Gordon stamped their authority on their respective competitions with excellent performances, achieved in slightly different ways, at last night's race meeting at the Smallbrook Stadium.

Edwards, winner of the title in the two previous years, produced two winning rides and two second places for ten points during qualification to secure a grand final slot, but he was outscored by former Wightlink Islander Paul Starke who recorded four wins whilst come-back king Steve Boxall again showed his liking for the Smallbrook track with eleven points. Completing the Grand Final line-up was Warrior’s Arran Butcher who pipped another name from the past Andre Compton who showed that he still has plenty to offer should he ever wish to return to the shale.

Before the meeting many supporters were tipping Anzac’s Jake Turner and Brayden McGuinness for podium places, however both had nights to forget with Kiwi Turner taking three separate falls in an identical place before withdrawing from the meeting whilst McGuinness also took a fall and had an engine failure before being well beaten in the C Final by a classy ride from young Freddy Hodder.

Warrior’s George Congreve was a tapes to flag winner of the B Final with Compton a steady second and Morgan Williams and James Laker continuing their personal battles for the third time with the latter prevailing 2-1.

Onto the Grand Final and the prospect of an exciting climax became reality as Starke and Edwards made the best starts. Exiting bend two it was Starke who eased to the front with Edwards two bike length’s back and Boxall a further two lengths away and for the first lap in was close between all three, however exiting bend two on the second lap Starke made a slight mistake and Edwards was quick to spot the opportunity to drive hard and fast into bend three, run wide to the outside and use the heavier shale to pick up the traction needed to hit the front. The others, who deserve full credit for their contributions, had no response as the title holder was away and gone.

Result:
C Final: Hodder, McGuinness, Turner (NS)
B Final: Congreve, Compton, Laker, Williams
Grand Final: Edwards, Starke, Boxall, Butcher

If Edwards had to work overtime to secure his win, for Katie Gordon in the Nora Women’s Championship it was really plain sailing. Having recorded four impressive wins on Tuesday evening, it was more of the same in the second meeting with a sequence of four clean, quick starts and convincing race wins for the UK Women’s undisputed number one. Stepping up from third place last year to runner-up this time was home racer Steph Whitlock with a consistent set of eight second places whilst fellow Islander Anastasia Sallee took third place overall.

Rounding off a night full of variety, the youth riders on the Island were given an opportunity to race as part of the main event with each taking four rides in front of an appreciative audience. Dorset racer Charlie Southwick was best winning all his outings with Tia Brant heading Jack Scully-Syer and Charlie Green for the minor places.

Katie Gordon Katie Gordon Racing does it again and wins the 2023 NORA British Women’s Championship held at Smallbrook Stadium, Isle of Wight in association with Jason Waring and Alan Critcher

2nd was Steph Whitlock, 3rd Anastasia Sallee and 4th Wendy McAllan.

Well done everyone and let’s inspire, educate and bring on more female riders to speedway so that 2024 will be out of this world.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this another fabulous success.
