Remember the July CrowdStrike outage that caused chaos for businesses around the world? If you were affected, you’re not alone - millions felt the impact as travel, banking, and healthcare networks were disrupted by one of the largest IT outages in history.

The culprit? A small software update that left 8.5 million Windows devices facing the dreaded blue screen of death (BSOD).

In a lighthearted twist, CrowdStrike’s president Michael Sentonas took the stage at DEF CON in Las Vegas to accept the “Epic Fail” award, known as the Pwnie, at the world’s biggest hacking and security conference.

The award, given for the most spectacular blunders in cyber security, was a bit larger than usual this year, a nod to the scale of the mishap. Sentonas joked about the surprise of his team when he decided to accept the award in person. But he also took the opportunity to apologise to everyone affected, emphasising that owning up to mistakes is key to CrowdStrike’s philosophy.

The towering Pwnie trophy will head back to CrowdStrike’s HQ, serving as a reminder that even the best can stumble.

Today marks a significant milestone in the history of technology: On this day in 1969, the first Interface Message Processor (IMP) was delivered to UCLA.

You won’t have heard of it, but this device was the very first building block of the Internet as we know it today. The IMP was a revolutionary piece of technology that allowed different research networks to connect, and it became the first generation of what we now call network routers.

Just a month later, the second IMP was installed at the Stanford Research Institute. These two devices made history on 29th of October 1969, when the first message was sent between them. UCLA student Charley Kline attempted to send the word "login," but the system crashed after just the first two letters, making "lo" the first message ever transmitted over what would become the Internet.

While simple, this first communication was the spark that ignited our digital revolution.

For business owners, this anniversary is a reminder of the incredible impact that technology has had on the way we work and communicate. The Internet has grown from those first two letters - lo - into a tool that powers everything.

Where would we be without it today? It’s a hard thought to comprehend isn’t it?

Here’s some nightmare fodder for you: A global company recently fell victim to a sophisticated scam that cost them a massive $60 million (£46 million).

This wasn’t due to a high-tech hack or a complex breach, but something much simpler - social engineering. An employee was tricked into transferring funds to scammers, thinking they were making legitimate payments.

This kind of scam is known as a Business Email Compromise (BEC) attack. Cyber criminals either impersonate a company executive or gain access to their email and then convince an unsuspecting employee to make a payment. They might claim it’s for a business deal that needs to be done quickly and quietly, adding pressure to act fast.

For businesses, this is a sobering reminder that the biggest risks aren't always technical, they’re often human. Employees are prime targets for these kinds of attacks - especially if they have access to company funds.

The best defence? Education.

Training your team to recognise the signs of a scam could save your business millions. Encourage a culture where employees verify requests, especially when money is involved, and always double-check unusual demands, no matter how urgent they seem.

Investing in security training isn’t just a smart move, it’s essential. If you need help getting your employees up to speed on cyber security, my team can help.

Hacking is a real threat to your business. If you don’t prioritise your cyber security, you risk losing data, facing ID theft, and more. But how can you tell if you’ve been hacked?

First, watch out for pop-up messages and antivirus warnings. These can often be malware pretending to be helpful alerts. If you see one, don’t click.

Another sign is if friends or colleagues tell you they’ve received spam from your email. This means a hacker might be using your account to spread malware.

New and unexpected software on your computer is also a red flag. This could be malicious software installed by hackers. Similarly, if you get notifications about account changes you didn’t request, check things are secure.

Slow performance and frequent crashes can indicate that malware is running on your computer, using up resources. Changes to your web browser, like a new homepage or unexpected toolbars, are another sign of trouble. Lastly, if your we**am activates on its own, someone might be spying on you.

How can you protect your computer?

First, keep your operating system up to date. Let your device install updates automatically.

Running security software is crucial too.

Always use strong, unique passwords for each account to prevent one breach from leading to others. Implementing two-factor authentication (2FA) where you get a login code on another device, adds an extra layer of security.

Finally, avoid using public or unsecured WiFi. These networks are easy targets for hackers. If you must use them, avoid logging into sensitive accounts.

My team and I help businesses round here stay secure. We do all the work so they don’t have to. Can we keep your business secure?

A fascinating piece of tech history happened on this day back in 1991. Astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis sent the first ever email from space using an Apple Macintosh Portable computer.

When you think about all the technological marvels that made this possible, it’s really mind-blowing.

Astronauts Shannon Lucid and James C. Adamson used the AppleLink online service to send this historic message:

"Hello Earth! Greetings from the STS-43 Crew. This is the first AppleLink from space. Having a GREAT time, wish you were here,…send cryo and RCS! Hasta la vista, baby,…we’ll be back!"

I love this. What piece of tech history or innovation has inspired you in business?

Recently, an auction began featuring one of the rarest pieces of console gaming history: A Gold Nintendo World Championships game cartridge from 1990. It was produced as an exclusive prize for Nintendo Power magazine readers, and only 26 were ever made.

The auction for this ultra-rare item opened back in July, and there’s a big buzz. Back in 2014, one of these cartridges sold for more than $100,000 (around £76,800) on eBay.

The bidding for this piece is set to end on the 17th August.

For those unfamiliar, these game cartridges were part of the 1990 Nintendo World Challenge, an event that toured 29 US cities to find America's top gamers. Competitors played timed versions of Super Mario Bros, Tetris, and Rad Racer on these special game cartridges. The gold versions, presented to contest winners, have become legendary among collectors.

What's interesting from a business perspective is the investment potential of such rare items. In recent years, we've seen a surge in the value of vintage gaming cartridges. A sealed copy of Super Mario Bros sold for $660,000 (£511,600) in 2021, and a rare original run of Legend of Zelda fetched $870,000 (£674,400). The rarity and nostalgia associated with these items make them highly sought after, not just by gamers but by investors looking to diversify their portfolios with unique assets.

Whether you're a gaming enthusiast or not, this is a reminder that sometimes, the most unexpected items can turn into valuable assets. Tell me, what would your top bid be?

I’ve got another winner from Microsoft to tell you about… Microsoft Edge will help extend your device's battery life. How? With the new integration of Windows 11's built-in Energy Saver mode.

Here’s what it means for you and your team.

Microsoft Edge already offers an “Efficiency mode” that helps reduce the need to constantly charge laptops and tablets. Now, with the integration of Energy Saver, Edge will automatically switch to power-saving mode when your device’s battery drops below 20%. This means less worry about finding power and more focus on getting work done.

The new feature will help limit visual effects and animations, which are notorious for draining battery life. If Energy Saver is available but not yet active on your PC, Edge will prompt you to turn it on, making sure you get the most out of your battery.

For devices with limited resources, Microsoft is also testing a RAM usage control feature in Edge. This allows you to set a specific amount of memory for Edge to use, which is great for maintaining performance on older or less powerful devices.

With these updates, you and your team can enjoy longer battery life, smoother performance, and less stress about running out of power.

Will you try this out straight away?

Have you heard about the Planner app in Teams? It’s a fantastic tool for organising tasks and keeping your team on track. And it’s about to get even better with new Copilot features.

Copilot is your virtual assistant, powered by generative AI. It will also be more reliable in providing updates about your project’s progress, due dates, and who’s assigned to what.

In addition, managing tasks will become much smoother. Adding subtasks and linking tasks to specific goals and buckets will become easy, breaking down large projects into more manageable pieces.

If you’re not sure what to ask Copilot, new suggested prompts can guide you, highlighting what questions you can ask. Soon you’ll be able to create a whole new plan just by typing in a single text prompt. Imagine setting up goals, buckets, and a detailed work breakdown all at once. This will save so much time, right?

If you’re already using Microsoft Teams but don’t have a Project Plan license, you can start a 30-day free trial and test out Copilot in Planner. It’s easy. Just open the Planner app in Teams, click on the diamond icon in the app, and follow the prompts to start your free trial.

Have you tried Planner yet? What do you think?

There's a cyber threat you might not have heard of - Account Takeover (ATO) attacks.

It's when cyber criminals gain unauthorised access to your online accounts. This can expose sensitive data, enable financial theft, and allow further attacks. And it’s happening more than you might think – ATO attempts skyrocketed by 427% last year.

Cyber criminals use sophisticated techniques to steal your login details, often using generative AI. This AI can create incredibly realistic phishing emails that appear to be from someone you trust, tricking even the savviest people into giving up their details. It's what’s making the attacks so dangerous.

Imagine a cyber criminal gains access to the email of a senior person in your business. They can send fraudulent messages to employees, partners, or clients. And it’s not just a hypothetical scenario – 75% of businesses reported at least one ATO attack last year, and more than a third faced more than five incidents.

So, how do you protect your business? Here’s my advice.

Encourage employees to use complex passwords generated randomly and stored in a password manager.

Use Multi Factor Authentication where you get a login code on another device. It’s not foolproof but it adds an extra layer of security.

Invest in advanced security tools that can detect unusual activities and potential threats.

Give your team regular training on recognising and avoiding cyber threats.

Remember, being proactive is always your best defence. If my team can be proactive for you, get in touch.

I’m a big fan of Microsoft Teams, but I thought this was pretty cool.

Zoom is testing a brand-new feature: Workflow Automation. It’s a no-code tool that’s designed to save time by automating repetitive tasks that eat up your day. You can set up automations using a simple drag-and-drop interface right in Zoom’s Workplace app.

If you’re a team leader needing daily project updates, for example, with Workflow Automation, you could create a recurring message that automatically posts in Zoom chat, asking for team status updates. The tool can also introduce new team members to your channels or streamline time-off requests.

Zoom’s Workflow Automation is similar to tools available in Microsoft Teams, like Power Automate. And just like Teams can integrate with other Microsoft tools such as Outlook and SharePoint, Zoom's new feature also connects with third-party apps like Google Drive and Microsoft Outlook. That means you can create smooth workflows across different platforms, enhancing productivity and collaboration.

Zoom is already known for its powerful videoconferencing, but it’s expanding its capabilities with chat, whiteboards, note-taking, and room-booking tools. Now, with Workflow Automation, Zoom is stepping up to offer even more, hoping to keep up with what you might find in Microsoft’s ecosystem.

This feature is currently in beta and free for paid Zoom customers. We’ll have to wait and see what the future rollout will be.

If you’re keen to try something like this without subscribing to Zoom, let me show you what Teams has to offer. Get in touch.

It’s never been more obvious that a strong IT infrastructure is crucial for success. It powers operations, supports employees, and keeps data secure. But how do you know when it's time for an upgrade? Here are five clear signs:

Frequent downtime: Is your business regularly disrupted by server crashes or network outages? Frequent downtime can mean lost productivity and revenue. If system outages are becoming common, your infrastructure is struggling to keep up.

Slow performance: Are your employees complaining about sluggish computers or delayed responses? Slow performance can hinder productivity and frustrate customers. If your systems are taking forever to load, it’s a red flag that your infrastructure may be outdated.

Security breaches: Frequent security breaches are a glaring sign that your IT systems are vulnerable. Outdated systems can't handle new cyber threats. Enhancing your security with the latest software, firewalls, and encryption can protect your business.

Lack of scalability: If your systems can't handle increased demand, new services, or additional users, you have scalability issues. Cloud solutions and modular systems can provide the flexibility needed to scale efficiently.

High maintenance costs: Spending loads repairing and maintaining old equipment? High maintenance costs indicate inefficiency. Investing in newer tech can reduce maintenance costs and improve overall efficiency.

Ever used a video to train your newest hire? Google's DeepMind team is doing just that. They're teaching robots by having them watch videos, thanks to Google's Gemini 1.5 Pro AI model.

These robots watch videos of homes or offices to learn their way around and carry out tasks. With Gemini 1.5 Pro's ability to process tons of information at once, the robots are becoming quite the helpers. They can complete more than 50 different instructions with a 90% success rate in real-world tests.

I can’t help but think about the potential.

Robots could soon help with chores at home or even assist with more complex tasks at work. They can navigate to a fridge, check for a specific drink, and let you know if it's there – all by watching a simple video. It's like an assistant that learns by observation.

While these AI-powered robots aren't hitting the market just yet (they still take about 30 seconds to process each task), the progress is fascinating. Integrating AI like Gemini 1.5 Pro into robotics could revolutionise industries like healthcare, shipping… just about anything.

So, next time you're training a new team member, just imagine a robot learning the same way by watching a video.

Microsoft Excel now lets you translate text automatically and detect the language of the text you type in. This update, available on Windows and Mac, is great for businesses working with multilingual data.

Here’s how it works:

Not sure what language “Hola mundo!” is? Just type =DETECTLANGUAGE(A1) (assuming it's in cell A1), and Excel will tell you it’s Spanish by returning “es.” Easy.

Want to translate “Hello, World!” into Spanish? Type =TRANSLATE(A1, “en,” “es”), and Excel will magically show “Hola mundo!” right in your spreadsheet. No need for external apps.

These features are currently in testing. Microsoft 365 Insiders on the Beta Channel can use them. All being well there’ll be a general rollout soon enough.

I bet you £5 there are loads of other hidden productivity features in Microsoft’s applications that would save your business time or money. Want to take that bet? Get in touch.

Do you ever use Win + C as a shortcut on your PC. It’s had a few uses over the years, but not any more… it’s being switched off in an upcoming update.

Think back… do you remember the Windows 8 Charms Bar? Win + C was its shortcut. Then came Cortana in Windows 10, and the shortcut opened her instead. With Windows 11, Win + C was updated to open Copilot.

Now Microsoft is decoupling Copilot from the taskbar and offering it as a standalone app, making the shortcut unnecessary.

This move makes me wonder, is the Win + C shortcut cursed?

Every feature it’s been tied to has eventually been removed. Microsoft's decision to disable it raises questions about Copilot's future… but don’t worry, it's not going away. Copilot will still be available as an app on the taskbar, just not linked to Win + C.

While Copilot is now a web app you can open from the taskbar, the shortcut’s removal hints at bigger changes. Microsoft is shifting focus, especially towards enterprise customers.

What do you think? Is the Win + C shortcut cursed, or is it just coincidence?

Microsoft is working on an exciting update that could make it easier to manage your phone from your PC.

According to recent reports, Phone Link could be integrated into a new feature called the Companion panel. This floating panel, which can be docked to the left or right of the Start menu, will display real-time information just like the Live Tiles of old. The idea is to bring your phone's notifications and updates directly to your PC's Start menu, making it more convenient to keep track of messages, calls, and more while you work.

Imagine being able to see all your phone's important notifications right on your PC without having to pick up your phone. Whether it’s a text message, a call, or an app notification, everything will be right there in the Start menu. This integration will save you time and keep you focused on your work, boosting your productivity.

While this feature is still in the testing phase and not officially confirmed, it seems very likely that Microsoft will roll it out soon. Given how much effort they’re putting into integrating phones with Windows, this move makes perfect sense.

This update is part of Microsoft's broader effort to make devices work better together. With Apple introducing iPhone Mirroring in macOS Sequoia, it's clear that deep integration of phones into desktop operating systems is the future.

Is this a feature you’ll be excited to try out?

Ever accidentally deleted an important file and needed it back ASAP? Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us. Luckily, deleted files aren’t really gone forever.

When you delete a file in Windows, it goes to the Recycle Bin. To restore a file, head to the Recycle Bin on your desktop. If you don’t see it, right-click on the desktop, go to Personalise > Themes > Desktop icon settings, and check the Recycle Bin option. You can also find it in File Explorer’s left-hand navigation pane or by searching for it in the taskbar search bar.

Once inside the Recycle Bin, you can:

- Click "Empty Recycle Bin" to delete everything in it.
- Click "Restore all items" to bring back everything.
- Select specific files and click "Restore the selected items" to recover them.

By default, files stay in the Recycle Bin for 30 days before they’re permanently deleted. But you can change this. Go to Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense. Toggle on "Automatic User content cleanup" and adjust how long files stay in the Recycle Bin.

Need to permanently delete a file right away? Select the file in File Explorer and press Shift + Delete. You’ll get a warning, but once you confirm, the file is gone for good.

If your files are backed up to OneDrive, they also have their own Recycle Bin. Access OneDrive on the web or via the cloud icon in your taskbar. In the OneDrive Recycle Bin, you can:

- Restore files deleted in the last 30 days.
- Select individual files to delete or restore.
- Click "Empty recycle bin" to erase everything permanently or "Restore all items" to recover everything.

When a file synced to both OneDrive and your PC is deleted, it goes to the Recycle Bin in both places, but the bins aren’t synced. So, if you’ve permanently deleted it from one place, it might still be recoverable from the other.

Remember, if you’re selling or getting rid of a device, make sure to completely wipe your files to protect your privacy! I can help with that - get in touch.

Ever imagined a supercomputer on your wrist? Maybe not, but an electrical engineer named Chris Fenton has done just that, miniaturising a 1990s Cray C90 supercomputer into a wristwatch.

Using 3D printing he’s crafted a tiny marvel. The watch even has a battery with a built-in charger and can be worn with a NATO-style wrist strap.

But here's where it gets fun: Instead of just telling the time, this super-watch runs a complex simulation of Jupiter and its 63 moons. He wrote a special program that mimics Cray instructions to show how these celestial bodies interact gravitationally. To tell the time, you look at the positions of Jupiter’s moons – sounds like a challenge!

While it's more of a fun project than a practical device, it’s a great example of how far technology has come. This mini supercomputer wristwatch pushes the boundaries of what we can create and showcases the incredible potential of modern tech.

Imagine the possibilities for your business. While you might not need a supercomputer on your wrist, embracing cutting-edge technology can give you a competitive edge.

Do you miss the Windows 10 File Explorer in Windows 11? Well, Microsoft forgot to remove it, and you can easily access it without any tech tricks or third-party tools. This is great news if you prefer the older interface for its simplicity and familiarity.

Here’s how you can get the Windows 10 File Explorer up and running in just a few simple steps:

1. Type ‘Control Panel’ into the search box in the Windows 11 taskbar and open it.
2. Click on ‘System and Security.’
3. Click on ‘Windows Tools.’

This opens the ‘Windows Tools’ folder with the classic Windows 10 File Explorer look. You can navigate through your files and drives using this familiar interface. It doesn’t interfere with the rest of Windows 11, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

This workaround has no downsides and you can even use both File Explorers side by side. Plus, you get back the ‘drag and drop’ feature in File Explorer’s address bar, making file management easier.

For quick access, right-click ‘Windows Tools’ in the ‘System and Security’ section, create a shortcut, and pin it to your Start menu or taskbar.
