Pond day 4th Oct 2024!

09/10/2024

Last Friday was Pond Day at the wood! Conservation and Education Coordinator Charley and volunteer Tash got in the pond in waders and pulled out some of the bulrush. Bulrush spreads by rhizomes, and if left it will spread across the whole pond and dry it out until eventually it's not a pond any more. We keep some bulrush and remove some (more than usual this year as it didn't get done last year due to all the 🌧).

As well as getting in the pond, volunteers Sally, Cecilia and Tash did some "glade maintenance" - scything, raking and lopping vegetation around the pond, to let in more light and help more wildflowers to thrive next year. Sadly we saw no Common Spotted Orchids around the pond this year - hopefully next year we will again after everyone's hard work 💪

Photos to follow!
