Did you know that there were passages and chambers inside the walls of Scarborough Castle? There was also a stair to the chapel in the forebuilding beside the entrance door!
It's starting to get colder out there! We're embracing the last days of warm weather but also looking forward to views like this of Scarborough Castle 😍
Did you know that the great tower at Scarborough Castle was built by Henry II between 1159 and 1169 to demonstrate his seizure of the castle?
The tower not only overlooks the town but was also built to see approaches to the castle from land and sea 👀
UPDATE: We're back open! The wind has settled enough to open our gates back up.
Scarborough Castle will be closed until further notice today (Friday 23 Aug) due to high windspeeds beyond our safe site operating standards. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
The barbican gate at Scarborough Castle, though rebuilt a few times, still hints at its original design from around 1300!
An oddly shaped fragment of stone in the left-hand tower is all that remains of a carved shield bearing the royal arms from 1405 🛡️
Coffee + Castle = paradise 👌🏰
Did you know that this cross is made from jet, a form of fossilised wood? ✝️
The upper arm has a hole through it, meaning it was likely suspended on a necklace.
This particular cross was found in the graveyard of the medieval Chapel of Our Lady, and what a gorgeous find it is 😍
We welcome any and all explorers, paws or no paws 😍🐶
