Lateral flow tests (LFTs) also known as lateral flow immunochromatographic assays or rapid tests, are simple devices intended to detect the presence of a target substance in a liquid sample without the need for specialized and costly equipment.

LFTs operate on the same principles as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA).

How to take the test:

Taking a lateral flow test usually involves taking a sample from the back of the throat near the tonsils and the nose, or from the nose only, using a swab.

The swab is dipped into an extraction solution. This is then dripped on to the device's paper pad, producing the reaction that gives the result.

The tests give a quick result, as the sample does not need to be sent to a lab.

Test Result:

Negative result: one line next to C shows the test is negative.

Void: no lines, or one line next to T, means the test is void. You will need to re-take with a fresh test kit.

Positive result: 2 lines, one next to C and one next to T, even faint lines, shows the test is positive.

More than 6 million diabetes tests missed during the pandemic.
Over a 6-month period in 2020, more than 6.6 million diabetes tests were missed nationally, including 5.2 million diagnostic and 1.4 million monitoring HbA1c tests, according to a retrospective study presented at this year’s virtual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).

It is estimated that 5–10% of patients with prediabetes convert to diabetes each year’,. ‘This suggests that tens of thousands of these patients are likely to become patients with full-blown diabetes across the UK because of the missed tests (Professor Fryer)

Pharmacy: Always trusted for your health” will be the theme of World Pharmacists Day on 25 September

Evidence indicates a significant association between trust in healthcare professionals and health outcomes for patients.

“Pharmacy has built up a reserve of trust over many years of caring, positive relationships, expertise and excellent practice, all delivered with consistency.

For many years, pharmacists have consistently been named among the top five most trusted professionals in national surveys.

Positive relationships: Our genuine interest in our patients and time taken to listen to their needs, as well as our extra efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, have helped us to establish meaningful connections and continue to build positive relationships.

Competency/expertise : We typically complete a four-year Master of Pharmacy degree or a doctorate in pharmacy, followed by a preregistration year/internship. Once registered, we undertake lifelong learning or further training to become more specialised.

Consistency : As the most accessible healthcare provider in many parts of the world, working in premises that operate longer working hours than many other healthcare facilities, we and our pharmacies are more able to demonstrate, consistently, our skills and caring.

Congratulations and thank you to all pharmacists on world pharmacist day .

Molluscum contagiosum:

Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral skin infection of childhood that causes localised clusters of umbilicated epidermal papules.

MC is generally a harmless condition that normally gets better in a few months without any specific treatment.

However, it's common for the condition to spread around the body, so it can take up to 18 months or more for the condition to clear completely.

Causes of molluscum contagiosum (MC):

MC is caused by a virus known as the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV).

This virus can be spread through:

-Close direct contact – such as touching the skin of an infected person
-Touching contaminated objects – such as towels, flannels, toys and clothes
-Sexual contact – this includes intimate physical contact as well as s*xual in*******se.

Prevention of molluscum contagiosum infection:-

Molluscum contagiosum is infectious while active. However, affected children and adults should continue to attend daycare, school, and work.

To reduce spread:

-Keep hands clean
-Avoid scratching or shaving
-Cover all visible lesions with clothing or watertight bandages
-Dispose of used bandages
-Do not share towels, clothing, or other personal effects
-Adults should practice safe s*x or abstinence.

Gallstones don't usually cause any symptoms. But if a gallstone blocks one of the bile ducts, it can cause sudden, severe abdominal pain, known as biliary colic.

Gallstones can cause sudden, severe abdominal pain that usually lasts 1 to 5 hours, although it can sometimes last just a few minutes.

The pain can be felt:

in the centre of your abdomen (tummy)
just under the ribs on your right-hand side – it may spread from here to your side or shoulder blade.

Other symptoms:-

Occasionally, gallstones can cause more serious problems if they obstruct the flow of bile for longer periods or move into other organs, such as the pancreas or small bowel.

If this happens, you may develop:

a high temperature of 38C or above
more persistent pain
a rapid heartbeat
yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
itchy skin
diarrhoea
chills or shivering attacks
confusion
a loss of appetite

Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea — the clear, dome-shaped tissue on the front of your eye that covers the pupil and iris. Keratitis may or may not be associated with an infection. Noninfectious keratitis can be caused by a relatively minor injury, by wearing your contact lenses too long or by a foreign body in the eye. Infectious keratitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.

Symptoms:-
Signs and symptoms of keratitis include:

-Eye redness
-Eye pain
-Excess tears or other discharge from your eye.
-Difficulty opening your eyelid because of pain or irritation.
-Blurred vision
-Decreased vision
-Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
-A feeling that something is in your eye.

Prevention:-

If you wear contact lenses, proper use, cleaning and disinfecting can help prevent keratitis. Follow these tips:

Choose daily wear contacts, and take them out before going to sleep.
Wash, rinse and dry your hands thoroughly before handling your contacts.
Follow your eye care professional's recommendations for taking care of your lenses.
Use only sterile products that are made specifically for contact lens care, and use lens care products made for the type of lenses you wear.
Gently rub the lenses during cleaning to enhance the cleaning performance of the contact lens solutions. Avoid rough handling that might cause your lenses to become scratched.
Replace your contact lenses as recommended.
Replace your contact lens case every three to six months.
Discard the solution in the contact lens case each time you disinfect your lenses. Don't "top off" the old solution that's already in the case.
Don't wear contact lenses when you go swimming.

Aspirin may help treat aggressive breast cancer 18/08/2021

Aspirin may help fight aggressive breast cancer by making hard-to-treat tumours more responsive to anti-cancer drugs, doctors say.

A team at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust, in Manchester, are beginning a trial with triple-negative breast-cancer patients. They suspect it is aspirin's anti-inflammatory properties rather than its analgesic effect that gives the boost.

Animal studies have already shown encouraging results.

But it is too early to recommend people start taking it. More research is needed.

Different type of Headache.

10/08/2021

Actinic keratoses (also called solar keratoses) are dry scaly patches of skin that have been damaged by the sun.

The patches are not usually serious. But there's a small chance they could become skin cancer, so it's important to avoid further damage to your skin.

See a GP if:-

-this is the first time you have noticed patches on your skin
-the patches begin to bleed, get bigger, change colour, feel tender or develop into a lump

It's important to get these skin changes checked, in case they could be caused by something more serious, such as skin cancer.

Do:-

-use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 before going out into the sun and reapply regularly
-wear a hat and clothing that fully covers your legs and arms when you're out in the sunlight

Don’t:-

-do not use sunlamps or sunbeds as these can also cause skin damage
-do not go into the sun between 11am and 3pm – this is when the sun is at its strongest.

If you have actinic keratoses it's important to avoid any further sun damage. This will stop you getting more skin patches and will lower your chance of getting skin cancer.

Earwax, also known by the medical term cerumen, is a brown, orange, red, yellowish or gray waxy substance secreted in the ear canal of humans and other mammals. It protects the skin of the human ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and provides protection against bacteria, fungi, and water.

Don't try to dig it out:

Never attempt to dig out excessive or hardened earwax with available items, such as a paper clip, a cotton swab or a hairpin. You may push the wax farther into your ear and cause serious damage to the lining of your ear canal or eardrum.

Symptoms of earwax build-up include:

-hearing loss.
-earache or a feeling that your ears are blocked.
-ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus).
-vertigo (feeling dizzy and sick).

Causes of earwax build-up:-

A build-up of earwax can happen if:

-you have narrow or damaged ear canals.
-you have lots of hair in your ear canals.
-you have a skin condition affecting your scalp or around your ear.
-you have inflammation of your ear canal (otitis externa or "swimmer’s ear").

Ask our professional staff for the more information on treatment for ear wax buildup. No appointment needed.

Why make saline nasal washing a part of your daily routine?

The air we breathe is often filled with polluting particulate matter and a host of viruses and bacteria - many of which are the cause of health concerns. Ever since the pandemic began, we have become much more conscious about our hygiene.

Since most disease-causing pathogens enter the body through our nose or mouth, it is imperative to take better care of them. Look at it this way - our nose, which acts as a filter for our body, is its first line of defence, and maintaining nasal hygiene can positively impact our overall health. This is why incorporating simple habits such as nasal washing can do wonders in keeping many respiratory health concerns at bay.

What is nasal washing, and why should you try it?

Nasal washing is the practice of cleansing your nasal passages with a saline spray. A saline spray washes out mucus, crusts, germs, and pollutants from your nose . And with natural ingredients like isotonic sea salt and glycerin, it can simultaneously help you clean and moisturise your nose.

Nasal washing with saline sprays such as aims to prevent these potential disease factors that can be present in the air and cause a simple cold or even more complex problems such as allergies and sinusitis (inflammation or swelling in the sinus tissues). It can also be used as adjuvant treatment for rhinosinusitis (inflammation of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses).

It even gently cleanses the nasal cavity during a cold or allergic condition and soothes the nasal passage. Additionally, the spray based application offers better nasal coverage and is safe for anyone above the age of 2 years.
Regular use of saline nasal spray throughout the year can shield you against perennial infections or seasonal allergies. And taking care of your nasal health all year round may save you from experiencing nasal discomforts.

Ask our professional staff for more information.
