HOW TO BEAT THE WINDOWS 11 COMPUTER TECH TRAP

This blogger details a smooth migration path to getting off of Windows by migrating to free, open-source apps that run on both Windows and Linux.

This advice is going to be invaluable to users who are not able to upgrade their older hardware when Microsoft eventually ends support for Windows 10 in 2025. That leaves plenty of time to learn how to use these amazing, free apps.

YOU SHOULD POSSIBLY BE EXPECTING TROUBLE WITH YOUR COMPUTERS COME TIME TO UPGRADE FROM WINDOWS 10 TO WINDOWS 11

If you have an older machine, Windows 11 will likely refuse to upgrade from Windows 10 unless it can support "Secure Boot" and "TMP 2.0". You'll also need to have "8GB of RAM" as a system requirement. Many perfectly good CPUs will fail to make the grade.

You have until 2025 when Windows 10 will no longer be supported but time passes fast and long before then, people will begin sweating over what to do about it. We're predicting some degree of widespread technical carnage.

Around about this time, we anticipate that we'll see lots of people finally coming to their senses and giving Linux Ubuntu a try, in preference to heaving out perfectly good computers and paying between £600-£1,000 for a new one, just to run Windows 11.
In fact, it's already started happening but let's see just how big of an OS migration it turns out to be.

If you run an older computer that fails these tests, Microsoft is effectively saying they no longer want to know you, unless you're willing to fork out fortunes for a new computer. If we treated customers in this manner, we'd be out of business tomorrow.

Fortunately for us, we run Windows 11 as a "virtual machine" on Linux Debian 11 using KVM. This enables us to virtually emulate the above-mentioned requirements and spark up Windows 11 in a VM, without forking out fortunes for a new, qualifying computer.

We rarely, if ever, go anywhere near Windows but, as IT professionals, we have to keep a running copy, just in case. At least for the time being.

This article explains how it's done on Ubuntu and Debian but be warned, the process is a complete and utter geek-fest. Quite achievable though if you take your time. This will enable you to run Ubuntu for daily use but start up a virtual copy of Windows 11 for any remaining Windows apps you might still need to use.

BUSINESSES SHOULD DUMP WINDOWS FOR THE LINUX DESKTOP

This article in The Register doesn't pull any punches. Having switched 100% from Windows to Linux many years ago I would, of course, agree with this sentiment. I also understand that many of our business clients have valid reasons for staying with Windows, at least for the time being.

In the domestic market, two issues that were stopping many home users from switching from Windows to Linux were gaming and audio production, but Linux has rapidly gained ground in these areas of technology and many home users are migrating wholesale to Linux as a result.
