Long post. But one I've been waiting eagerly to make since UCP began.
What can I say? Oscar “Ginger Fury” Ownsworth the fighter is one scary dude.
Oscar Ownsworth the guy never stops smiling and is a ridiculously hard worker.
Oscar has just taken the Raged UK Lightweight title in a devastating fashion. His relentless pace pushed his opponent into a place he never thought he'd have to go. His opponent simply could not recover from Oscar's constant movement and driving forward pressure.
By the end of the fight, Oscar's opponent struggled to get back to his feet. Meanwhile Oscar turned to us in his corner and said, "I'm not even tired."
I think it'd be cheap to claim our four months of Strength and Conditioning training secured the victory. Oscar winning is testament to his grit and martial skill. He survived being dropped by a left hook and snatched back control from a nearly sunk RNC. The finishing combination was down to experience, timing, and sheer Ginger Fury.
For me though, the fact Oscar wasn't tired and essentially drowned his opponent with footwork and strikes is a second huge victory. We spent the entire time together rescheduling fights, working around niggles, and constantly changing the plan. Our training routines were live and sometimes we'd have to alter them on the bounce depending how Oscar was feeling.
Fighters, please take note. The longer you keep repeating camps after one another, the greater your injury risk (usually) is. The stress, caloric deficit, and hard sparring is a recipe for a broken body and hindered psyche. You MUST adjust and take time for the body to recuperate. You MUST remember that this is fight sports and injury risk is already high. You MUST remember that fighters are just people, and just because you've got X heavy front squats today, doesn't mean you have to do them at that intensity. The longer you're in this "in the trenches" mentality, the higher your cortisol is going to be too. This in itself will ruin sleep, recovery, and ramp up injury risk.
Getting to the fight in one piece can be more important than constantly chasing a narrow edged peak. Us S&C coaches have a job to keep you fighters on the mat and growing as athletes. I personally, as a trainer, tried to hit the Goldilocks zone for Oscar. We always monitored how he moved, how he felt physically+mentally, AND how old niggles were feeling. There's a great S&C coach local tonus called Jordan Webster and he says; "You can't un-burn toast." We borrowed that for the final few weeks leading up the Saturday night. Everything became a careful balancing act the closer we got to the fight. And it WORKED!
A second victory was Oscar's strength in the cage. He told me that his opponent did not feel strong at all. At no point did Oscar look out muscled, which is great considering we didn't leave the first round and his opponent would have been fresh as a daisy. So you should hope, anyway. I'll be brutally honest here. When Oscar walked in, I saw a smiling, friendly, six foot odd dynamite stick of power. (I'm quite stocky so think anyone over 5' 8" is a six footer 😅).
The first thing I thought of after checking his movement and potential, were the philosophies of both Louis Simmons and Chad Wesley Smith. Although famous as powerlifting coaches, they'd also both trained world calibre combat sports athletes. I'm paraphrasing, but both coaches have spoken about raising the floor by just getting the fighter stronger. When absolute strength improves, so does everything else, in theory. This is mainly talking about power, muscular endurance, and robustness. Obviously, we really wanted to improve these two aspects too in our training. Let's make this long and rangy gun slinger faster, stronger, and more explosive. About 8 weeks was spent building a solid base of strength and we started to sprinkle in more and more power based training. Then we added power endurance protocols, which Oscar really enjoyed!
We also spent some time working on Oscar's lactate threshold and his resilience to lactic acid buildup. I'd also argue that this could have helped Oscar keep pushing the pace, when his opponent started to become gassed and slow down.
Last thing. Oscar winning was down to him, his supportive team mates like Chris who came to corner, and all the hard work his coaches put in at AVT MMA Leeds etc. Our S&C is just the cherry on the top.
Thanks for letting me help you, Oscar. Onto the next one! Whenever you're ready my friend, we're good to go.
Being the soft bastard I am, I'll be sponsoring Oscar for his next fight too. I've got nothing but respect for this dude and I wish him all the success his hard work brings.
Hometown hero Oscar “Ginger Fury” Ownsworth] will soon be putting on a show in Barnsley!
No matter who, what, where, when... The goal stays the same for this South Yorkshire shin slinger. Total domination at 155lb.
Let's go, Oscar!
Oscar “Ginger Fury” Ownsworth]
Y'know what, I'm getting a lot of backhanded criticism at the minute about being a PT without abs. One with a bit of a dad bod.
You're not really offending me. It is just a bit boring to be honest.
So, seems as everyone is an expert, I'll explain. I used to be in very good nick. Very. Lean, low body fat, high muscle mass. Hashtag athlete.
Then I suffered an illness that put me bedridden for close to a year. Only my close friends really know about this. I couldn't carry a bag of shopping for close to 12-months. Couldn't text. Couldn't read a book. None of that. Pain meds all day and more to send me to sleep. It got dark as f**k as I lost my job, rented house, hobbies, and life.
So, despite having knee surgery late 2019 after complications which limited my mobility, I became ill as f**k too. Lifechanging ill. I wasn't supposed to get better! I was written off essentially, told I'd not be able to lift weights or martial arts again. Take pain killers, sign off work, be cared for by Aimee or my parents. All the while not being able to move my arms and watching the muscle I'd worked hard for drip from my body.
My muscle mass dropped dramatically. Due to me not being able to exercise DURING A FU***NG PANDEMIC and due to extreme pain and loss of limb control, I laid in bed and put fat on.
I came back from that. When I started again last year, I couldn't squat an empty bar. I coached with a f**king stick and arm straps holding my hands in place. Pilled up to my eyeballs cadging a lift to the gym.
Many people have overcome their struggles. Many people have to learn to live with them! Many illnesses are invisible. Remember that. I know some brave folk who you'd never know were crumbling inside.
So, to judge my knowledge on appearances is a massive f**k you. I know where I've been, I know where I'm going. I can help others get there too. I've beaten what the experts called unbeatable.
If me not being shredded offends you. Take your index finger, write 'opinion' on it, spit on the end, and ram it up your arse. F**k yourself with your s**tty opinion. It is good to nobody.
There ya go. Sound. You don't have the foggiest what it has taken just to get back to baseline! Well done on trying to shame the above. Well played.
Everyone else, cheers for helping me become a person again.
Red Zone Training in preparation for and his boxing bout. 🌶️🌶️ Light work for this guy though!
We're hitting one more week of RZT before tapering out towards fight week. This is high intensity training for a very specific demand. Pushing Oscar's heart rate into the upper echelons and concentrating on reducing his heart rate as quickly as possible during the rest period. Forcing his aerobic system to become more efficient and maximising recovery during his bout.
RZT is a get in, get out protocol which I'll use for a short period with specific guys. It allows us to push the boxer above 90% of their HR with continual effort and less injury risk compared to sparring. The treadmill keeps the boxer moving, so they don't subconsciously or intentionally slow down when the going gets tough. We must be about 90% MHR for the work period.
We don't normally do RZT with MMA fighters or grapplers. But given Oscar has been solely focussing on boxing for this bout, we followed the Boxing Science protocol and put the work in. There is no way his opponent is doing this in today's heat. It's all good, he'll wish he had when Ginger Fury is dishing out fisticuffs.
Shout out all the real ones training in this heat. If you're sacking it off for the beer garden, fair play. No one will remember your name. ❤️🤘🏻☠️
If you want to know more about RZT, I highly recommend checking out the work of Boxing Science and follow their guide.
Oscar 'Ginger Fury' Ownsworth working his neck in preparation for... Everything! Boxing, MMA, BJJ, grappling, fighting tigers in Sainsbury's. Everything combat sport related requires a strong and robust neck.🦒
Did you the neck is the 4th most injured site in MMA? And did you know that an increase in neck strength can reduce concussion risk? How about the fact a more robust neck can help keep you safer when attacking and defending takedowns and subs in grappling? 👨🏻🏫 Nerdy stuff. But relevant!
Yup. Train your neck! Today we worked on flexion, lateral flexion, and extension. Saturday we'll touch on isometrics. Sunday we'll wake up feeling good.
If you're wanting more guidance on staying fit and ready for combat sports training, get in touch! Let's get to work.
You know the drill! MMA tonight at 19:00 - 20:15. Everybody welcome.
We'll be working get ups into standup striking and grappling positions. Ain't nobody holding us down! 😎

Guys, I need 1x combat sports athlete to come train with me in Sheffield 2-3x a week. I have the Phil Daru S&C certification to work through and I need a dedicated fighter for coursework. Phil Daru is the head S&C coach at American Top Team and he's won the Fighter's Only Coach of the Year award numerous times. I am enrolled into his mentorship! So, I'll be using his tried and tested methods to train you. I won't be making any s**t up on the fly... Think about that. I just need someone to use as a case study.
You'll get free S&C for around three months. The ideal candidate may also get further sponsorship. This will be £75 per week of training, multiplied by 12-weeks. £1,125 is a lot of money. Especially when fighting doesn't pay a tonne anyway.
All you have to do is come to the performance gym in Sheffield 2-3x per week. Maybe 4 if you're really loving it. I'm based in Neepsend which is in the North part of Sheffield next to the M1. It's about 40-min from Leeds, 30-min from Donny, 30-min from Barnsley, and 30-min from Chezzy. I could consider ferrying you from the train station if you're committed.
Yes, I'm insured. Yes, I'm qualified to coach you. I've been having great success with my fighters so far. But they're all prepping for competition, which means they're not ideal candidates to start changing things with.
No, you don't have to be a competitor. Even recreational martial artists or boxers can come forward. If you're recreational, you must train seriously at your sport (3-4x weekly minimum).
Just drop me a message to get involved.
(AVT & Combat Base athletes will get first dibs.)

Outside keeping the nation's bands moving, Dan is a proud dad. One of his main goals is to become fitter and healthier so he can always play and keep up with his wonderful daughter. Fair play, Dan! A brilliant goal if I've ever heard one before. 🎯
We're in a GPP phase right now. Building Dan a wide base of general fitness. And to be fair, he's one of the hardest workers I've trained on the gym floor. I'm considering handcuffs to make him take his rest periods! 💪🏻💪🏻 Let's go, Dan! 📈😤💥💥
BJJ blue belt Kirk keeping it simple and reaping the rewards of RDL's at the end of today's session. We've been working together a while now, helping this blue belt get back in mat shape after a long lay off. Don't call it a comeback!
Our goal is same as always in this scenario - improve movement patterns, build resilience, and increase work capacity. No fancy periodisation in this block. Just good honest work and compounding gains. ⚒️
Kirk lifts with me two times a week to supplement his BJJ training at Fortify Jiu Jitsu in Sheffield. If you're after a place to grapple in steel city, you'll not find a better club! 🥋 And if you want to get fitter, faster, and stronger for jits.... Hello. It's me, Unrivalled Performance. Still punching with dumbbells? STOP!
Shadowboxing with weights heavier than a glove might be making you slower. That, and potentially skewing up your punching mechanics. 😬
Follow through the slides to find out how, why, and 3 better options for optimal punching prowess.
TLDR; Drop the dumbbells. They'll not kill you, but they might make you slower. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
Professional MMA fighter & grappler putting in the work. 💪🏼😤 Danny is out of camp right now, so we're building gorilla like strength and forging his body armour ready for action. We're in the workshop, hammering hot steel on the anvil. 🛠️
Mixed martial arts and grappling are two of the most physically demanding sports on the planet. So we plan for success by not only improving Danny's general strength and movement patterns, but building resiliency around these key joints too. We can never eliminate injury risk. But we CAN try and mitigate it.
Are you between fights? Ready to become an unrivalled version of yourself? DM me with 'unrivalled' and let's chat. 👊🏻
Trainin' necks & cashin' cheques. Part 1 - Reducing Concussion.
Concussions are caused when the brain moves around inside the skull, typically caused by an impact. They're no joke, and can cause serious neurological issues. The amount of concussions you receive can also negatively impact your longevity as a fighter. You can't keep cashin' cheques if concussions keep you out of the cage. According to the UFC Pi, concussions caused an average of 19 days missed training/competing for men, and 25 for women. The data suggests women and young boys are at a greater risk of concussion due to their relatively weaker necks compared to men.
A stronger, more reactive neck can theoretically help reduce the whiplash effect impact, therefore reducing the risk of concussion. Research suggests that +1 lb. of neck strength could cause a -5% risk of concussion.
So, in the words of the Wu - Protect Ya Neck! That way, it'll help protect your brain.
*Fighting style may also contribute to the amount and severity of concussions a fighter experience. Understandably, the fighter who is hit less, runs a lower risk. Brawlers are dropping like flies in the fight game.
Let's go! I'm proud to announce we'll be supporting professional MMA fighter and grappling wizard as a sponsored athlete.
